Re: Buying ATI HD 5770 (Gigabyte vs Sapphire vs XFX)

I've got two of those XFX 5770s running in CrossFire on my system. They're not too bad, though a little noisy when the fans ramp up (could be because I have the CrossFire setup). If you're interested in overclocking, I run mine at 950MHz with 1400MHz with no problems whatsoever.

Cooler Master V8 Socket 938 (AM2+/AM3) questions

I've got a Cooler Master V8 I picked up quite a while ago to use with the processor I was using at the time - Phenom II 720. It worked fine, was quiet, etc. etc. About four months ago, I picked up a C3 Phenom II 955, and went about disassembling my system for the processor upgrade. I noticed that th...

Re: re-install OS X or just delete Boot Camp?

You should be ok to restore from a case-sensitive TM backup to case-insensitive, provided you don't have any files that will end up with the same name (MyFile and myfile are two separate items with the case-sensitive filesystem, but refer to the same item with a case-insensitive filesystem). Dependi...

Re: re-install OS X or just delete Boot Camp?

You can just delete the windows partition, and extend the Mac OS volume to take up the slack space. There isn't really anything else you need to do. If you're looking to get rid of the case sensitive feature, though, a reinstall is probably the best bet.

Re: Please challenge my reasoning re: new PC

I think the Intel platform probably offers the best performance overall, but I've enjoyed the longevity of Socket 938. I have an older Gigabyte DDR2 board, and it's been through 3 processors to date - 5000+ BE, Phenom II 720, and now Phenom II 955. For me, the longevity was more important than absol...

Re: Cool n' Quiet + Speed Step on overclocked Black Edition AM3

How are you overclocking - base clock increase? It's possible that enabling the 4th core on your 720 is not allowing your cpu to drop to low-power states. Maybe try disabling the 'extra' core and see if it works with that?

Re: Cool n' Quiet + Speed Step on overclocked Black Edition AM3

As StuG mentions, the motherboard is likely to be the limiting factor with CnQ and overclocking. I have three different Gigabyte boards, and all three disable CnQ if I adjust the multiplier up or raise the voltage higher than 'stock*'. CnQ stays enabled, however, if I lower the voltage, or simply in...

Re: What should 5-5-5-18 RAM run with 4 sticks?

my g/f has an AM3 system, and I bumped her memory from 4GB (2x2 1333) to 8GB (4x2 1333). I didn't have to make any changes to the timing to get it to work correctly on her Gigabyte board - I did have to set the speed and such manually, though. Still, no problems running at stock timing with 4 sticks...

Re: The road to decisiveness is paved with many obstacles

I think I'll go along with MrJP's advice, and pick up a 5870 when the prices drop a bit. I'm intrigued by the new Fermi architecture, but there is no way I'm going to plan an upgrade based on parts that haven't even been announced yet. Besides, when a GF100-based card is released, if it's considerab...

Re: The road to decisiveness is paved with many obstacles

I stuck Win 7 x64 on the thing, and I'll see how it goes. This machine had 8GB of RAM and 64-bit Vista on it at one time, but I ended up pulling 4GB to use in a machine I donated to someone else; I actually switched to 32-bit to see if I could get a bit better performance out of it. I forgot the 896...

The road to decisiveness is paved with many obstacles

I feel the need to do something with my game system, but there are so many choices I'm not sure what to do. My system, in it's current incarnation, is thus: Phenom II 720 @3.5 GHz EVGA GTX 260 192sp (700/1400/1200) Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P 4 GB DDR2-800 (5-5-5-12) Win 7 Pro 32-bit I've been feeling a bi...

Re: Pentium 3 Xeon on 440BX

I salvaged a few older Compaq DL380R01 servers recently- they're all using 2 x Slot 1 P-III, and I've got a spread between 733 and 1100MHz. I don't know if the VRM will work with your board, however. If we can figure it out, I'll hook you up with a pair.

Netbook-friendly Linux install for Toshiba NB205?

I've got a Toshiba NB205 netbook. It came delivered with Windows XP Home, which worked ok, but I am not fond of the stripped-down version of XP. I then upgraded the thing to Vista Business SP2, which ran fairly well on the thing, but the battery life was not so hot. After a few weeks of that, I then...

Re: what kind of linux/unix do you use

I use OpenSolaris and Mac OS X for myself, and OpenSolaris, Ubuntu Server, or FreeBSD for clients of mine that actually use *nix servers. As to which you should try, it's hard to say. If you're just looking to gain familiarity with a *nix environment, any Linux distribution would suffice to provide ...

Re: 4850 dual display, Windows 7 x64, DVI to VGA

Well, I managed to get the stupid thing squared away; I used a higher-quality DVI-to-VGA adapter from my GTX260, which I'm certain didn't make any difference. I also ran through CCC and reset the card's configuration to stock, and then configured the dual displays through CCC. Worked fine. Thanks fo...

Re: Looking for the best Do-All 24" to 28"screen for less $400

I bought an HP 2709m 27" lcd a couple of weeks ago for $399. I'm not a photo professional - I *am* self-employed and do development and web design and that sort of nonsense, though. And I play a lot of games. The 2709 fits my needs pretty well - decent response time and contrast (3ms/30,000:1, ...

Re: 4850 dual display, Windows 7 x64, DVI to VGA

Sorry I have nothing much worth contributing... I'm hoping (fingers crossed) that the DVI-to-VGA adapter is the culprit - it's a DVI-D to VGA that I just had laying about. When I have some time, I'm going to try it with a couple of different DVI-I adapters to see if that's the problem. DVI-D...

Re: 4850 dual display, Windows 7 x64, DVI to VGA

I'm going to try to get the machine squared away here *real soon now* - just have to make some time to spend with it. The card is running at stock speed - no overclocks whatsoever. The 4850s run hot enough, and that little baby cooler it comes with doesn't seem like it would like overclocking. For t...

Re: 4850 dual display, Windows 7 x64, DVI to VGA

A DVI-VGA "adapter" is nothing more than some wires -- it just carries the signal from the analog pins on the DVI-I connector to the pins on a VGA-standard connector. It doesn't "do" anything, so it can't be responsible for issues on another connector. You're looking at either a...

4850 dual display, Windows 7 x64, DVI to VGA

I'm putting together a cheapie rig assembled from leftovers to replace an aging Dell my girlfriend's brother uses. The system is using a Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H board, Athlon x2 5600+, 4 GB DDR2-800, Visiontek HD4850, and Windows 7 x64 (RTM from Technet). When running one display using DVI, it works ...

Re: Help... Wich motherboard for Phenom II 720?

I would recommend going for AM3/DDR3, if you're buying a new motherboard. I know from personal experience that the current AM3 CPUs work surprisingly well in older AM2+/DDR2 motherboards (I upgraded both my computer and my girlfriend's, which were using Athlon X2s in Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H motherboa...

Re: AMD X2 budget board ?

I've had pretty good luck with a gigabyte ga-ma69gm-s2h. it's pretty cheap (there's a newer version out that uses the 780 chipset, but it's more expensive), has acceptable integrated graphics, if you need that, and supports all athlon x2 and any phenom under 125w. I use mine with an x2 5000+ BE, and...
