Re: A new System Guide? What happen to this Guide?

I loved TR's system build guides. They were detailed and always looked to the future, helping me buy PCs that had good upgrade paths. I'm sad to find that they've stopped being published, but I want to thank everyone who worked on them throughout the years as you saved me money and educated at the s...

Re: Xbox 720 / PS4 rumored specs: Let's build them now.

the specifications of the console are so anemic relative to current midrange gaming computers that it won`t matter. Any Sandy or Ivy Bridge CPU (at least i5 and up) will outperform the speculated CPU in the next Xbox, only 4 threads or not. And what about the GPU? Shouldn't we wait for the 8000 ser...

Re: Xbox 720 / PS4 rumored specs: Let's build them now.

Alright, answering my own question :) Short answer: No, not yet. And it's probably too early to be making this thread. Long answer: The "Durango" aka Xbox 720 rumor build Amd Zambezi 8150 3.6GHz Socket AM3+ Eight-Core (Not the same processor, just a guess at ability - probably an upgrade) ...

Opt-in would be the best solution.

Xbox 720 / PS4 rumored specs: Let's build them now.

I plan to play the next "generation" of games on Windows/Linux, as usual. My question is: Can we build an Xbox 720 equivalent as a PC, right now? How much would it cost? Here are the rumored specs (as of today) for the Xbox 720, codenamed Durango: - AMD x86 Jaguar 1.6GHZ 8-Core [Targeting ...

Minimum PSU Wattage and the Econobox - a problem?

The Radeon 4850 has been a staple of the econobox for a long time now, and so has the 380 Earthwatts PSU. The problem? ATI says the 4850 requires at least a 450 Watt PSU. Is it safe to run the Econobox? I've been running mine since April and had a video card just die - could it be blamed on the PSU?

Re: How to troubleshoot hardware when you have no parts?

Alright, no rattling on the HDD, which is a Western Digital WD64000AAKS (thanks Econobox!) and yes to Hance, the plastic part is ripped off but the 7 copper wires are still there. I'm pretty hopeful, maybe that's dumb, but hey it's 2 months of work and recovery places are talking in the thousands :)...

Re: How to troubleshoot hardware when you have no parts?

the SATA connector on the hdd has been ripped off, the little copper connectors are exposed. It has two months of work that I don't have a copy of on it.

Re: How to troubleshoot hardware when you have no parts?

Alright, I was thinking of going to a store and buying all the parts, then returning the ones I don't need. Is that wrong? I'd take pictures but the camera took a spill too, along with my clothes. When the girl on the 2nd floor and I heard a bang, we looked out the window just in time to see my moni...

How to troubleshoot hardware when you have no parts?

All of my PCs took a spill from a 3rd story window to the street last night. I'm sure something is salvagable, but what? My main PC, for example, has the same problem as this guy but I don't have a compatible cpu to test. When you lack the parts to test problem hardware, what do you do? Just buy it ...

Dual-band N router that will work with everyone's adapter?

I'm in a 3-story building and trying to go 100% wireless. Gaming, streaming, p2p, we do it all. I'd like to get a dual-band "N" router, but my friends have warned me that N routers only work well when they're put into 5ghz only mode. Is this true? If so, that wouldn't work since many here ...

How often to re-install XP?

XP does need to be re-installed every so often to run smoothly, right? My brother insists that was a thing of the past for windows '98 and earlier. I could use some help convincing him otherwise. My personal install of XP has had daily use for 5 years, gone through tons of spyware, virii, and sharew...

Re: Cheap Laptop?

I'd consider something in the Thinkpad R series (R60 or R61). It costs a little more, but the build quality is so high it's worth it. When buying a laptop you have to think about more than just tech specs, you have to consider how much of a beating it can take. After 4 years of college it will proba...

Re: Dual Monitors cut my VRAM in half? Same for TV-out?

Thanks guys, just to be sure I ran a Crysis timedemo with one monitor and then with the 2nd one hooked up - the results were less than 1 FPS of each other. (28.93 single monitor, 28.58 dual monitor) Wikipedia's dual monitor entry is officially bogus. Also, I'd like to thank Techreport for putting to...

Yeah, I do this with WoW all the time. Full screen + browsing is nice. Not sure about other games, because WoW is the only one I play that's slow-paced enough for me to want to have a browser open :)

Dual Monitors cut my VRAM in half? Same for TV-out?

I've been running dual monitors for years, and just ran across something on wikipedia , The primary disadvantage to the usage of dual monitors is that the resources of the video card are effectively halved when the second display device is connected. The decreased processing power and VRAM available...

Re: Need a really good PC, limit: $650

I'm about to buy the Econobox,
http://techreport.com/articles.x/15009/2

And wondering why you chose the
GA-EP45-DS3L
over the
GA-EP35-DS3L

I looked at their CPU support list and it looked similar, is there some big upgrade I'm missing here?
