I'm pretty happy with my HP LP2475w at work, but obviously I don't play games on it.

OK, switched to the OCZ XMP DDR3-1600 8-8-8. I like speed, but I don't like tweaking like crazy, so XMP sounds good to me.

Re: Probable gaming i7 build from single core Opteron

Yeah, I've thought about it, but I'm just not using this machine for data storage; It's pretty much exclusively for gaming. We use laptops for web browsing, turbotax, email, etc. This thing is going to suck too much power if I leave it on all the time, so I've been toying with the idea of getting a ...

Hunh. i hadn't even heard of that board, which makes me a tad leery. Anyone round here using one?

I'm just coming off of an unstable board, so I really want something decent this time around.

Re: Probable gaming i7 build from single core Opteron

So the general concensus is the 640, huh? I checked today, and the 60 GB SSD is out of the question as far as capacity, so that leaves pretty much the Velociraptor or the Cav Black. Is the 640 faster than the 1 TB, or vice versa? Any feelings on the Gigabyte mobo vs other (relative) cheapies out the...

Re: Can i reuse my hard drive in a build

Hi Budd, It's fairly unlikely that the same hard drive will work, and unfortunately, Microsoft is likely to consider this a new computer, rather than an upgrade, so your product key might not work either. If you have plane jane XP discs to go with that product code, you'll have more luck, but if all...

Ah yes, the third quesiton I couldn't remember:

Re: Probable gaming i7 build from single core Opteron

Well, I've always felt that storage is the main bottleneck these days, and I'm finally in a position where I can afford to get faster. I was certainly considering the 640 GB Caviar Black, though. I'd probably keep the 200GB drive on if I got the little dinky ssd. (not in a position to afford a decen...

Here's what I've got now, and what parts I'm planning on upgrading: Opteron 148 (OC'd to 2.9) -> Core i7 920 (to be OC'd, hopefully) DFI CFX3200 -> Gigabyte EX58-UD3R 2 GB Patriot DDR400 2-2-2 -> 6 GB OCZ Reaper DDR3-1866 (it's cheap!) Re: Three+ displays on a Budget

AFAIK, the Intel on board GPU is disabled when a graphics card is installed. How many PCIe slots (and of what types) do you have available? If you have an x16 and an x1 free, you can still find ATI based x1 cards out there (usually x1550s and the like), and those are dirt cheap. So you'd need a chea...

Re: "Upgrade" my 7950GT to a 9500GT? Or more?

The 9500GT is a joke for anyone interested in gaming. The 9600GT is probably the lowest you'd want to go, but I'd recommend a Radeon 4670, 4830, or 4850. $50 cards were crap when you bought the 7950, and they're crap now.

Re: What technology runs in your panel?

I've currently got an Apple Cinema 20" (plastic bezel, not aluminum), but I'm toying with upgrading. I still only want a 20" (space restrictions) and I'd like to stick with widescreen. The reason for the upgrade is remarkably bad tearing--I notice it most in Portal, until I turn vsync on. ...

Re: Gaming: Core i7/920 vs Q9x50 vs waiting a really long time

1366 is basically "extreme edition" stuff although there is only 1 CPU with that moniker. I won't be surprised if they do pull a S940. Did you read my post above? ;) Yeah, I did, and you're probably right. Unfortunately, waiting 3 months puts me squarely into the "not going to have t...

Re: Gaming: Core i7/920 vs Q9x50 vs waiting a really long time

Yeah, that's my fear about 1366, that Intel will pull a socked 940 on it or the like--I can rationalize a $300 processor (barely), but if all they do in the future is Extremes for that socket, there's no way in hell... Yeah, I'm still looking at what I can do. A little Amazon here to avoid tax and s...

Re: Gaming: Core i7/920 vs Q9x50 vs waiting a really long time

Ah, to clear a couple of things up--it's an Opteron 148--a single core. And I'm feeling like I'm being held back by the CPU as far as gaming. When I got the 4850, I had switched the machine back to standard config--2.2GHz. I noticed that framerates were not nearly as good as I might have expected--t...

I'm tending to agree with ish on this one, which means I wait a couple of months. With any luck, there will be some price drops and at least a clearer picture of the Havendales (or Lynnfields? don't have 'em straight yet). Thanks, guys!

Gaming: Core i7/920 vs Q9x50 vs waiting a really long time

It's been done before, but let's do it again... Here's my current build: Opteron 2.2GHz/1MB (don't remember model number), S939, oc'd to 2.9GHz Patriot 2x1GB DDR400, oc'd to DDR533 or something like DFI CFX3200-DR--oc's well, but it locks up randomly on cold boot until reset. After reset, works fine...

Hmm. Well, I hear what you're saying, but I was hoping (ha ha ha) not to have to buy a new video card with the new rig. Ordered the Newegg Asus TOP 4850 512MB special. Thanks, all!

Discovered I couldn't stomach the tax/shipping on the MSI 260, along with paying that $40 extra upfront that I probably wouldn't get back. I'd rather risk it on the $30 rebate ASUS form, where it's not incredibly draconian.

Well, there is that MSI GFX260 that would sort of be within range if MSI actually came through with the $40 rebate. But the form looks downright evil. 8-10 weeks.

Also: I've got a CFX3200 board (ATi chipset). Can I use an nVidia card on that?

Re: 4850 1 GB?

Heh... so the upshot is: why spend $30-40 extra now so I can get an extra $5 in 2 years if I decide to sell it?

So the extra RAM won't help at my resolution with hellishly complicated graphics a la Crysis?
