Re: How Apple Dethroned Intel As the World's Most Innovative Chipmaker

I'm giving Apple the benefit of the doubt. Intel hasn't significantly increased single core performance in years. I've been nothing but impressed with just how fast the latest round of iDevices feel. Even full desktop sites render just as quickly on an iPhone as they do on a Kaby Lake laptop. It's ...

What a bizarre movie. I remember stumbling out of the second-run theater wondering if I had somehow dreamed the entire thing up. But it's on TV right now & just as strange as I remember.

Re: Intel Processor bug incoming?

PC Perspective ran a few storage tests (including Optane): https://www.pcper.com/news/Storage/Meltdowns-Impact-Storage-Performance-Really-Issue Short version: There's an impact but it's not catastrophically bad and ironically the 900P SSD actually saw a small reduction in latency that I'm not sayin...

Re: Intel Processor bug incoming?

The Meltdown fix does activate, but the CPU lacks PCID and INVPCID instructions. Given that this poor T7500 can't even handle YouTube 1080p decoding, I'm not sure the performance hit the Meltdown patch gives is worth the bit of defense in depth provided. On a machine this old, what useful objective...

Re: Intel Processor bug incoming?

I just installed the Win7 patch on my work-provided laptop (Haswell-U). If it takes any sort of a performance hit, then I'm not patching my two home computers. They aren't mission-critical and certainly don't store any sensitive data; all of that boring stuff gets done on the work laptop.

Re: Intel Processor bug incoming?

I'm glad that I went back to Win7 last week. I am so going to hide that patch, as moronic as that decision may be from a security standpoint.

Re: What happened to my overclock?

Well, it started freezing again today. Just like the first time, it froze while playing a video file in MPC-HC. Win7 does indeed seem a little more sensitive to overclocking than Win10.
So 4.3GHz at 1.15v it is, then.

Re: What happened to my overclock?

Well, after a few days of using it, I still can't say that Win10 is much better now than it was at launch. Just switched back to Win7, fully expecting the instability @ 4.4GHz to return, but so far it's been stable. It just installed something like 260 updates without a hitch. I'm really wondering w...

Re: What happened to my overclock?

I finally upgraded to Windows 10 a few days ago, just in case MS actually does stop the free upgrades in January. Out of sheer curiosity, I took the CPU back up to 4.4GHz @ 1.165v after the upgrade. It actually seems to be stable again at 4.4GHz. Not sure if Win7 was just more sensitive to overclock...

Re: What happened to my overclock?

All five of my last five desktop CPUs have had issues (some minor) of one sort or another (voltages stock/stock/stock/1.27/1.33). I'm not exactly a strong believer in CPU reliability. Two of those (the 1.27 and 1.33, both Haswell on the same mobo) degraded to paperweight status from their OCs, desp...

Re: What happened to my overclock?

I'd wager it's a combination of other factors also. Such as: How many hours has your computer actually been running at 4.4GHz? 4 years of 2 hours per week is a lot different than 4 years at 20 hours per week.100 hours per week....etc etc. Also, chip lottery can play a role. I would agree that your ...
