Re: Used up all 8 GB of RAM

It all depends on what you are working with. I've seen processes take over 100GBs without leaking memory, and that is what they were supposed to use. In case you are wondering this is some CAD software for VLSI design.

Re: Lost a pet yesterday

My condolences. I have a 15-year old dog, and I know this moment is getting closer, but I feel sad just thinking about it. It is very hard to let go of a pet that's been around for so many years, we really get attached to them. I keep telling myself that I won't have another one after my dog goes aw...

Right now I am leaning towards the Aspire 1410 / 1810, because the specs look much better.

Asus netbooks have severe power supply issues?

Hi folks, I want to get a netbook, possibly in the beginning of Jan. I've been researching around Amazon, and it seems the Asus models have a problem with malfunctioning power cords, that stop working within 2 months or less of usage. Then there are several complaints on how Asus has been handling t...

This looks like a Citroen 15CV from 1938: http://www.voitures-d-ingenieurs.com/images/CITROEN-15CV1938L.jpg A Citroen would have the double inverted chevron on the grille. It looks like the chevron has fallen down or broken. Compare the car to the picture I sent, it looks much more like it than the...

Maybe you should look into those development kits. I know TI, Samsung and Intel, among others, have those.

Re: Java Assignment :(

So, you have a JButton showElement variable in your assignment2A class, but you also define a class called showElement. I would change the name of one of those. Also the randomNumber assignment inside main() looks wrong. You should do: for(int i = 0;i < 100;i++) { randomNumber[i] = generator.nextInt...

Re: Positive Playstation 3 Talk and Q/A

There is no frame rate issue with MGS4. This is just plain FUD. Go ahead and play it, you won't regret it. My experience with the PS3 has been more than stellar. I've got GTA4, GT5, GRID, Orange Box, MGS4 and Burnout Paradise. All of those are great games, plus the PS3 has bluetooth and regular usb ...

Re: Best Game Ever?

This thread brings back a lot of excellent memories. I've been playing games since the Atari, so I've played quite a lot of them, so I can't be possibly making justice to a lot of games I've played, but here's my list (I also don't remember some names): GTA series Gran Turismo series Final Fantasy V...

Those ping times are insanely high, there's definitely something wrong there. If I were you I'd be calling right now and complaining. I am in Brazil and I get much faster ping responses than you for all those sites you tested!

I can't say much about the playability in the PC or Xbox because I am playing it on a PS3, but I definitely recommend getting this came if you are into racing. It is very fun, has excellent graphics and the car damage physics is amazing as well.

Re: About to move into a new apartment

All N is a good idea. I was in a crowded environment once (hundreds of wireless networks running together pretty close to each other), and had to setup two different networks. The one running G was much worse not only in terms of bandwidth, but also response and signal strength. Machines would conne...

I have Windows XP Pro 32-bits, and this happens to me (let's say 1 out of 30 restarts). I never got down to the exact cause of the issue, but It looks like to me some driver getting stuck when loading. Problem became less frequent after a full chkdsk, which found and fixed some errors, maybe this wi...

I used to do it all the time when I was back in university. After I graduated and got a job, I started cutting back to the point I just don't do it anymore (aside from my own stuff). It is not worth for me, and I have to agree it is a hassle to attend friends who want this done for free, so I just s...

Re: Help with Geforce GTX 280 (SOLVED)

I have an update folks: So, turns out that the PSU on the server I have here has two 6-pin PCI-Express connectors and a 8-pin EPS +12 volt connector, that has nothing do to with the 8-pin PCI-Express one, although it looks similar. This is a typical server board thing for feeding processors. At this...

Re: Help with Geforce GTX 280

I will look for the adaptor. Actually no SLI, this is a Sun server running two dual-core opterons and Linux, it's the only one that fits the behemoth Geforce and that has enough juice too. This is for a project at work, we want to create/run applications on the Geforce using CUDA.

It didn't work, nothing shows up on the display and a red light shows up on the back of the video card. Oh well, I will try to find an adaptor for the PSU or get a new one altogether.

Help with Geforce GTX 280

Hi folks,

I have a GTX 280 with me, and I was wondering if I can turn it on using only the 6-pin auxiliary connector. My PSU is a 1kW one, but it doesn't have the 8-pin connector. Well, it does have one, but it doesn't fit the Geforce, do I need an adapter of some kind?

Re: Can you plug a router into another router?

As long as the router has the WAN port disconnected, the DHCP server off and it is connected to the network via a regular LAN port, with some IP address assigned to it, it should work fine, I have used the same setup before.

Re: PS3: Time to buy?

I am seriously considering getting a PS3. To me, the 40gb is the best value proposition if you don't care about backwards-compatibility. Also, there's no point in paying the price-premium associated with the 80gb model if all you care are the new games and the fact that you get a blu-ray player. Car...

Re: Booting linux off of a Compact Flash.

Regarding the flash durability, there are several filesystems aimed at them, like jffs2. They are not as fast as the most common options, but they have levelling themselves and other features to improve flash lifetime. There's also the possibility of creating a read-only RAM drive that loads on boot...
