Re: Serious bug in macOS High Sierra

I mean, we are already on iOS 11.2 (released to fix the time bug) and it is not even 2018 yet! So two major updates to 11 already. By September next year, we will be rocking iOS 11.11 lol And MacOS has been getting through with more bugs than before it seems. Meanwhile my new Android phone (late Au...

Re: Serious bug in macOS High Sierra

It seems recently, Apple has been a bit sloppy on their OS releases. My first official (personal) Mac was the Power Mac G5 in 2004. And I have dabbled in different systems since then. However...recently it seems their iOS and OSx releases have been glitchy, or basically rushed out. Lots of simple th...

Re: H.265 decode requirements with Plex

I run a PowerEdge 2900 with dual E5410 Xeons. At some 98-100% CPU use, it will recode one 1080 film from 265 to 264. If my wife kicks something else up, it will struggle a little. I have the buffer set to 240 seconds, and I'll pause the film and let the server do its thing for a while, then play aga...

Re: Program like Prime95, but for GPU?

One that comes to mind for the GPU would be FurMark. Not really a test program, but a stress program. And if there are any problems with the GPU, that program will find it. Most likely in the form of a driver crash or an occasional BSOD.

This is how I diagnosed a bad VRM on an old card.

Re: .flac to .mp3 conversion?

728GB in FLAC format here. Mostly CD rips, but also includes some vinyl rips and digital downloads. Digital downloads that come in MP3 format get converted to FLAC (even though there's a size penalty) to have a consistent archival format, and to have them in a lossless format for manipulation via A...

Re: .flac to .mp3 conversion?

my collection of mostly 320K MP3's is stable at about a terabyte and hasn't much changed in over ten years now. It's been about ten years since I've checked my now-secondary PC to see if that old ASUS DVD burner still works. My CD collection, all ripped to WAV, comes in at 339 GB according to Win8....

Re: Retro console gaming

My biggest issue with playing old games on their original console is having to find (or dig out) an old tube TV. Trying to play the Genesis on the 55in LED is plain awful. Having to put in new batteries in the N64 memory pak has become obnoxious. As anytime I go to play Road Rash 64, Rainbow Six, or...

Re: That WannaCry ransomware

How does that work when these types of viruses may compromise XP or Win7 systems? Are the viruses blocked at the corporate firewall? At this point I'd hope that they're airgapped from production networks. At my last job, they had Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, and 8 (before 8.1) all on the same networ...

Re: That WannaCry ransomware

That virus, or maybe worm, is vicious. It had multiple languages and everything. I had to check our tools and report up all the ways we can stop it, even though we are mostly patched (stale systems FTL). It's no joke. What make me sad I'd all the stories of health care being hit. You would think wi...

Re: Your GPU Sucks: Unigine Superposition Released

My goal was to hit a score of 3000 and got to 3003! Core clock at 1500, and ram at 4001. Stock clocks are 1290/3505. Above 1500MHz, stability becomes a problem. Anyway, if you guys want me to add you in the sheet, please post the core clock and ram speed of your cards! Updated: http://linserv.biz.tm...

Re: AMD Ryzen 1800X temperature reading - subtract 20C???

I remember reading somewhere the max stable temp was 105c in AMD temps, so about 85c. With MX-4 paste and this cooler, my wife's stock clocked 1700x will hit 93c (or real 73c) after running prime95 for 15 min. I almost choked when I saw the temps jump to 90c. Checked the heatsink, checked everything...

It's the ad servers that are typically the problem, if not virtually always. Thus a "safe site" would have to be one that doesn't run ads from any of the normal ecosystems, and such a site basically doesn't exist. Will an AD blocker give any protection? Well hey! My site is 100% ad, cooki...

Playing through Singularity for the...3rd time now? But this time on the Xbox 360 (first two times were on PC). I honestly think this was a gem of a story that fell through the cracks.

And on PC: Picked up Doom for $18 on steam.

It has an Ethernet port, built in DVD burner, 2x USB 2.0 ports, headphone jack, replaceable RAM and replaceable HDD/SDD.  Granted it is a Core 2 Duo at 2.23GHz...point it, why would I pay $1799 for no ports, no disc drive, and fixed ram/stora...

Re: SATA SSD vs NVMe SSD (similar boot and load times)

I once ran Skyrim on a WD Green drive, WD Black drive, an OCZ ssd, and from RAM. I then tried different loading points to get a metric of how fast the game loads on these devices. The HDDs were the slowest obviously, while the SSD was a massive jump over the HDDs. Yet the RAM only shaved off about a...
