Re: Going from 660 to 1080

The card arrived, and apart from being longer in length, fit right into the slot where my 660 was, and I was pleased to see my existing power cables worked (once I realized the +2 little dongle was made for the 8-pin connections!) They also threw in a few game codes (Destiny 2, SCUM and Forge Arena)...

Re: Post Your Old Games!

I sat for countless hours trying to solve Manhunter: New York. I don't think I ever finished it either, I remember getting stuck at the same point every time, and I could never figure out the right steps to get past it.

Re: Going from 660 to 1080

It does kindof beg the question: If you win a $700 GPU, it might seem trivial to do an $80 PSU upgrade.... Of course I'd be fine with upgrading the PSU if the need arises. I'll start out with the one I've got and give it a go. My case is the "Corsair Graphite Series 600T CC600TM Graphite Grey ...

Going from 660 to 1080

I currently am using an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti video card in my computer. Because of an incredible amount of luck, I won in the NVIDIA E3 GameReady contest and am now the proud owner of an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition video card that should arrive any day now. I know that my power ...

Re: Graphics Card Upgrade

You don't NEED to have every setting on Ultra to enjoy games. My general recommendation is that a GTX 960 4GB is plenty for 1080p gaming. GTX 970 is more of a 1440p resolution gaming card. That sounds great, and I don't need 1440p. Looks like the 960 is a solid bet, and well within price range. For...

I might as well just into this thread, with hopes that someone can suggest a good upgrade for me as well. Re: Windows 7 Reboot Problem

I ran the sfc /scannow command, and it resulted in: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. The current BIOS on the machine is version 2.03. The latest one available on the Lenovo web site is 1.07 from 2011, go figure. I don't think I've even had the machine that long? I j...

Windows 7 Reboot Problem

I have a Lenovo G575 laptop with Windows 7 that has an odd problem. It works fine, no crashes, no software issues, plenty of hard drive space. I've upgraded it to 8GB of RAM recently, but this issue existed well before that. The problem? It won't REBOOT. It shuts down/up just fine, and that is what ...

Re: Good GPU Update for this system

Lobes, you could also look into overclocking the CPU, even if you're using the stock fan. It'll probably yield a nice performance increase in newer games. First, thanks to everyone in this thread...I've learned a ton just reading posts from those of you much more "in-the-know" than myself...

Re: Good GPU Update for this system

AMD is just being careful with the wattage rating. Nvidia does this, too. They are catering to the crowd who buys the 500w Best Buy branded PSU. What make PSU do you have? A good 380w unit like an Antec Earthwatts could probably run a 6850, but a cheap-a$$ Logisys probably couldn't. A Radeon 5770/6...

Even with my 380W power supply?

From the Radeon page:

500 Watt or greater power supply recommended

Good GPU Update for this system

My current system runs pretty good, so I'm really not looking to replace it all, but was curious if there exists a video card upgrade that would fit within my system parameters and give me a boost. I started looking at some, then realized some of them would most likely require me to update my power ...

While sorting through an old box containing random technology stuff in my basement, I came across this PDA, new in box, never been used. Re: Worth attempting to fix?

That protector did exactly what it claims to do. It does not claim to protect from surges that typically cause damage. Too many only learn from advertising - ignore the numbers. Perhaps the wording in my original post was taken the wrong way. I am in no way blaming the surge protector, or anyone/an...

Re: Worth attempting to fix?

Depending on the surge protector you have, you might be able to go after them. Most of the good ones have a policy that if any piece of equipment that's attached to it gets fried due to a surge, then they will give you some sort of payment for the damaged item. Don't know what kind of hoops you'd h...

Worth attempting to fix?

We had a couple of power surges at our house this week, and during one of them, I hear a loud popping sound, and smoke started coming out of the top of my monitor (Acer AL2017 20" 5ms LCD). I was using a surge protector too, so it must have been a strong one. Needless to say, it wouldn't even p...

Re: Dude, where's my 4GB?

I know I may sound simple here, but I'll go ahead and ask anyway: If I have Windows XP Professional (32-bit), and currently have 2GB of RAM, is there any benefit at all of going to 4GB, assuming that I do not make any BIOS changes? From reading this thread, it seems XP will only recognize a little o...

I had a couple of sticks giving me errors at about the 13-hour mark before. :o Couldn't I also just get two new sticks to test, and if they work, then great, and if they don't, I can just take them back? Re: A plea for help!

Run memtest to see if your RAM/RAM interface is bad. Try different slots too. Remember a "proper" memtest run is at least a few passes for a few hours. Assuming no problem with memtest, are you behind a router/firewall? If not, install XP with SP3 and then turn on Windows Firewall at leas...

I've got my system built (first one ever) and have hit a snag that has put everything on hold. Re: Full Size of HD not recognized

Slipstreaming SP3 isn't as easy as it sounds...you have to have a WinXP SP2 original disk to do it. I did not find this to be true. Tonight I slipstreamed SP3 onto an original (non SP) Windows XP Pro installation. Along with Internet Explorer 7 and the latest nVidia drivers for my graphics card. It...

Found a copy Partition Magic, installed, and was able to recover the unallocated space. However, when I try to merge the two partitions, it looks like it works, but when it prompts me to reboot, I get a blue screen telling me too many errors occurred and they don't end up getting merged. So, I basic...

BTW, I assume you installed with an XP cd and then updated to SP3 after it was installed? You assume correctly. The original XP Professional. I actually had to go from SP1 to SP2 to SP3, it kept failing over and over going directly to SP2, and there was no option to even try directly to SP3. Thanks...

I believe that you're connecting the power supply's floppy diskette drive power connector to one of the motherboard's fan power headers and grounding it out. That's not a good thing. Surprisingly, it's not the first time that we have heard of it. I believe you may be right, thank goodness I didn't ...
