Choosing between reference 7970s

Hey guys, I'm trying to decide between the XFX 7970 and the VisionTek 7970. The XFX has a 2 year limited warranty, while the VisionTek has a lifetime warranty. Both are the same price. I've never dealt with either of these companies in the past--any recommendations on which to choose? Also, would yo...

Re: Ethics in Video Games Survey

A note: The second question on the second page is ambiguous. I don't play all of those genres, so I only selected from ones that I do. However, the question appears to be asking if the gamer does, or does not, perceive a need for ethical decision making in all of those game genres. Similar issue wi...

Re: To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade

Just stick with your current build. At 1680x1050, your machine will be able to play Skyrim and BF3 acceptably well. Make the jump on a 7000 GPU with three cheap 1080p monitors. I've heard rumors that the new cards will be PCI-E 3.0... What does this mean if my mobo only supports 2.0? If I would hav...

To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade

My current build is as follows: ATI 4870 512mb Intel Q9550 @ stock 2.83 GHz 4gb DDR2 800 MHz RAM 640gb 7200rpm HDD 1680x1050 res monitor (I will either upgrade to 1920x1080 soon or invest in Eyefinity) My goal is to play BF3 and Skyrim comfortably at max settings. So my plan was set: purchase a Noct...

Re: Purchasing Used Graphics Cards

If he was using them for bit coin mining that means those cards were on 24/7, possibly overclocked. Either way those cards were in a high stress/heat environment and that could significantly shorten the life span. I guess if you were saving more money than you are with this deal I may jump on it bu...

Re: Purchasing Used Graphics Cards

I would only buy one from XFX with a lifetime warranty that will transfer to you (meaning original owner is selling it). Also, I would expect it to die within 1-2 years rather than 3-4. Basically, there is going to have to be an awesome discount from a highly reputable person to really want to cons...

Purchasing Used Graphics Cards

Hey there, I am looking at a couple MSI 6950 2gb's right now, and according to the seller they have been used "for about a month". I'll take this with a grain of salt, but what would you look for when buying used? I would pick them up in person. Somewhat reassuring is the fact that MSI off...

Re: CPU Cooling

Personally I would go with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065 Great product and if need be, you could get another 120mm fan and put it on the otherside of the cooler for better performance. Would this be sufficient for a 1GHz overclock? I want something cheap but i...

CPU Cooling

Hey guys, based on the information gathered in my previous thread, I'm deciding to overclock my Q9550 rather than purchase a whole new processor/mobo combo. I plan on overclocking it to around 3.8GHz (stock is 2.83). I originally planned on going with an air cooler like this: http://www.newegg.com/P...

Re: Upgrade Advice

Of course now the 7000 series is delayed until Q1 2012... May have to pull the trigger on a 6950 2gb right before the new generation just to play these new games coming out :(

As a final question, do you guys think just a GPU upgrade would get me through this current generation of games about to be released?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Re: Upgrade Advice

If he's happy with his monitor, he should be happy more or less with his gaming setup and changing the cpu, the gpu, etc etc will likely not yield physically noticeable gains at that resolution. That's completely, completely untrue. My setup is very, very similar to his. X4 955 at stock is almost a...

Re: Upgrade Advice

Agreeing with JAE, your video card could do with an upgrade, but if possible you should wait for the new generation to launch; I think the new gen Radeons will launch before Christmas, but the new gen Geforces probably not till after. Your CPU is a good one. If it is running at stock and you feel y...

Re: Upgrade Advice

my current system is still holding out pretty well. Intel Core2Quad Q9550 4gb DDR2 800 Radeon 4870 512mb 7200rpm HDD If you've waited this long and you aren't having problems with your games yet, I suggest that you wait until the Radeon HD7xxx parts appear to upgrade your graphics card. If the rumo...

Upgrade Advice

Hey guys! In anticipation of the upcoming games this fall, I've been pondering a new system build for a bit now. There's one thing, though--my current system is still holding out pretty well. By well, I mean I can still play most games on "high". Here it is: Intel Core2Quad Q9550 4gb DDR2 ...

Re: Completed First Build - How Would You Optimize?

You should be able to change your FSB from 333 MHz (quad-pumped "1333") to 400 MHz (quad-pumped "1600") pretty easily. This will take your RAM from 333 MHz (DDR2-667) to 400 MHz (DDR2-800) and overclock your processor by 20%. Hm, I actually do have DDR2-800 RAM (sorry if I wasn'...

Completed First Build - How Would You Optimize?

So I just finished up my first build and got it up and running. I'm eager to throw it to the wolves and run some synthetic tests with the help of Crysis Warhead and the like, but in the meantime, what would you do to optimize and clean up a bit? I'm not looking for a right or wrong answer, just curi...
