Re: What cases and PSUs are you guys using?

SuperMicro SC747TG-R1400B-SQ . Very expensive, not at all quiet. Recommended only if you have very specific needs (redundant power supply, 8 HDD hot swap, oversized motherboard)

Just took the delivery of a new Topre Realforce (my second - one for my desk at employer's , another for home office). It is one sweet keyboard :D

Re: So, mechanical keyboards

I'm thinking of Topre's new RGB model now that I've booked a trip for Osaka. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2MHE-rQPRA&feature=youtu.be&t=192 The switches have a firm-then-buckling smooth feel to it, like the keypads on medical diagnostic stations. Has anyone heard about their reliability...

Re: USB thumb drives: good or bad brands?

My pile of random thumbdrives consists of a mix of PNY, Kingston, Verbatim, Transcend, and Silicon Power. They've all been reliable. One thing that is worth mentioning: Write speeds are absolutely dismal on anything that didn't quote write speeds in its specs; if the write performance doesn't suck ...

Re: Aaaaaargh... gave my RK-9000 a beer bath!

Just checked on the keyboard. The switches are starting to feel normal again when pressed, so I think the internal mechanisms are drying out nicely. I'm gonna give it another hour (at least) in the dryer, then we'll see if it sustained any permanent damage. @curtisb - Yup, Founders makes some reall...

Re: Microsoft currently testing a tool for easier clean inst

I'm more interested in how they deal with product keys and activations for a clean install. All my (personal) Win7 Pro licenses that I've upgraded to 10 either had to be upgraded first, or required the Windows 7 product key. Once the July 29th deadline comes along I very much doubt I'll be able to ...

Re: Accidental Windows 10 upgrades

Well, OK. I run Windows 10 and there is not much wrong with it, however I would not encourage anyone for an upgrade without two severe warnings (1. you have to fight the OS for your privacy 2. not everything will work). Also, I run Windows on a virtual machine, the hypervisor is Linux and I have acc...

Re: Software Update Destroys $286 Million Japanese Satellite

I wonder if the cause was cultural "hate to disappoint the superiors" and the change in question got pushed before the final testing had completed, because the superiors were expecting that the testing had already completed.

I am second year happy with small Brother laser, older brother of HLL5100DN . These are good printers, and duplexing is surprisingly useful when you do not feel like buying paper very often

Re: External Soundcards

I love external DACs. Probably because I never heard good realtek before jumping onto DACs , and after this it was too late :) First I had (I still have it) Epiphany Acoustic, then Audioengine D1 and now I have SMSL M3. I also looked at more expensive DAC with support for asynchronous transmission, ...

Re: Replacement build

The i5 6600K supports the same VT-x and VT-d features as the 6700K and is quite a bit cheaper. Unless you really need hyperthreading or want the additional cache I'd save money here, personally. Could go towards more RAM or to get rid of that Velociraptor. hyperthreading is useful for virtualisatio...

A good reason not to use Windows 10. It might be a good reason to spend a bit more on Windows 10 Pro (..though there are several reasons that might be the case). May I ask why you consider the upgrade to Windows 10 Pro might be a worthy investment? here is my take: 1. home local network running on ...

Re: Faster RAM = dramatic performance improvement!

It's extra cache even when it's not as fast as the others, but it still makes a difference big enough for the 65W "mainstream" chip to beat the higher-clocked successor 91W enthusiast CPU when playing games, if you look at TRs much vaunted 99th percentile scatter graph . For a little bit ...

Re: Faster RAM = dramatic performance improvement!

I recall some people posting about how faster RAM speeds definitely made an impact when playing CPU-constrained games. IIRC they used BF4 multiplayer as an example, which apparently is (or was) CPU-bound with many players, and with faster RAM they got a significant performance increase. However, it...

Re: Faster RAM = dramatic performance improvement!

The maths of it also add up. Taking two common speeds of DDR3 RAM (with similar price points) 1600MHz CL9 and 2400MHz CL11 you have respective latency of 5.625ns and 4.583ns. If your processor is running a 4GHz and you have the slower RAM it has to wait an extra 5 cycles when it acessess RAM when c...

Re: Light bulbs that are similar to retail store lightening

I would like to use 4100K light bulbs for my room. I strongly dislike soft white (yellow) light. Philips Alto is indeed 4100K. My room size: height = 7 ft width = 8 ft length = 11 ft It is a small room. I found 4100K light bulbs in CFL version, but not in led at local retail stores. Since CFLs are ...
