Re: Nvidia Turing GTX1180 Rumors

I'll be curious to see if this next generation will be enough to push AAA games at 4K @ 90FPS. My 1080Ti can handle 4K@60+FPS, but we'll need a great deal of grunt to tame 4K. And then the question becomes "Why run 4K@90FPS if 1440P@200FPS is possible?"

Re: DOS sees directories, Windows doesn't

Yeah, the Windows driver stack for optical drives is a bizarre beast. I have vague recollections of various issues arising because of problems with "upper filter" and "lower filter" drivers, and performing manual registry surgery to fix it. Haven't had to deal with that sort of ...

Re: Lenovo Ideapad 720S 15: Gaming in a Business Suit

Update: apparently the 90W power supply can cause power throttling in games that load the CPU and GPU. I haven't experienced this, but users are reporting this behavior in BF1 and GTAV.

Currently I have stable summer temps in the mid-70s with the CPU @ -0.150V and GPU running 1695MHz @ -0.100V.

Re: Econo box with less gaming focus

I'm glad that the original poster's build is coming along well! For other readers, I would strongly suggest a refurb business line desktop from Dell, HP, or Lenovo. They're build to last and can generally be found with a SSD. Toss in a power-sipping GPU and you'll get quite a system for your budget....

As an additional side effect, if you are limiting what kids/teens can see/experience, it will make them disdainful of your rules. Disagree and have adequate experience to do so. Partly it depends on the child's personality, but even more so it depends on whether the parent has taught their children...

Re: New DP 1.4 Monitors Inbound...4K@120Hz

Existing GPUs can't drive these to their full potential, but given that a monitor of this capability is probably going to still be in active duty 10 years from now, that shouldn't be the be all and end all in the decision. 10 years is quite unlikely, given how quickly display technology has been ad...

Re: New DP 1.4 Monitors Inbound...4K@120Hz

The 200Hz 1440p option in the table clearly says VA type. Yes, I missed that line viewing on mobile. We'll have to wait to see if response times really support operation at 200Hz, or if these 35" panels will be similar to their VA predecessors, where certain jarring slow transitions mar perfor...

Re: Need Advice Adobe Laptop

From what I've read many i7-8XXXU laptops don't sustain those high boost clocks with all cores, so an i7-7700K might be a better option on a budget. My laptop (Ideapad 720S 15) is of reasonable build and can be found south of a grand on sale. https://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=12...

Re: Lenovo Ideapad 720S 15: Gaming in a Business Suit

My bottom line on the Lenovo 720S 15 is that it is a great all-around laptop that allows you to attend a class or visit a client during the day and play a few games at night. If you can snag a deal on it (BJs was selling them for $700 at one point), it's still quite a nice laptop. The only downside...

Re: Share Your GPU Undervolt

I had great luck undervolting my 1050Ti MaxQ GPU. It's running at a steady 0.9V and maintains 1700+ Mhz at that voltage. Of course, my laptop is more thermally limited and I may reduce clocks to lower temps and fan speeds.

Apologies if I missed this, but is there any way to tell if an application is forcing use of the HPET timer? I use MSI Afterburner to regulate fan speeds on my desktop and MSI Afterburner/Intel XTU to undervolt my laptop.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad 720S 15: Gaming in a Business Suit

Undervolting is like overclocking; you're testing to see if your CPU and GPU fall within the "lucky" or "unlucky" areas of a bell curve. Some individual CPUs/GPUs undervolt to extreme values smoothly; many undervolt moderately without issues; some cannot undervolt at all. Based o...

I'm playing good old new Doom. It's really fun. This is my best game of 2010-2020 so far. It's just pure, unadulterated fun. No levels, no gear, no unlocks...just FPS goodness. A lot of games these days try and trap you in their reward systems ("Okay, I need to level up 5 more times to unlock ...

For $30-40 you can get a simple PCIe card that will support up to 4K resolution, which is a reasonable stopgap measure (e.g. GT710). Used on ebay or a forum you can probably snag one even cheaper. :)

Honestly, your best bet would be to pick up 2 monitors. You can get a 22" 1080p monitor for under $100 these days. You can only game on one at a time, but your GPU can probably handle it fine. 2 of those is still cheaper than $275 for something your computer can handle now without scaling. Exa...

4K really seems like a waste at 27". You're inviting scaling issues in legacy apps and making gaming dependent on a $800 GPU investment.

Try out a 2560x1440 display and be blown away!
