Re: games with 16gb system requirements...fact? or fiction?

I can't speak to the other games, but on Titanfall 2, we're recommending 16GB because it should provide enough room for higher resolutions and higher quality settings, in particular for the texture streaming budget. The recommendation is also meant to be conservative because you want to avoid hittin...

Re: Machine "feel" and "platform latency"

Basically what I am interested in is feedback on how we can quantify "responsiveness". This is literally what latency measures - the lower the latency, the more "responsive" an action will feel. Smoothness on the other hand is dependent on consistency i.e. low standard deviation...

Re: Machine "feel" and "platform latency"

This is a fun read for an idea of "platform latency" as it relates to typing text: https://pavelfatin.com/typing-with-pleasure/ I can't remember where else I was reading this, but attempting to quantify latency on a modern consumer OS is basically impossible because they're designed to max...

Re: RIP WP10 (2015-2016)

I would be more optimistic about the future of WP10 if it weren't for the dearth of WP10 devices. MWC has come and gone and there was zero WP10 hype. The most recent Lumia flagship wasn't all that warmly received and it's using and slightly older chipset that has potential battery/heat issues. It's ...

Anything Mionix. I'm a palmer so it's really hard to find many mice with pinky support and Mionix are one of the few I've found with that feature. I think they have other mice more suited to the claw grip.

Re: Preliminary results for Crucial BX200 degraded read spee

This just looks like the progression to steady-state performance to me. The performance drop happens in the same range as the amount of data that's currently on the drive. TRIM should recover most of that lost performance though (not all, you'd have to secure erase the drive to get back to "ou...

Because the games that require people to upgrade their hardware are what would push hardware makers to give us more powerful products (in the gaming segment at least). Re: Windows 10 desktop on ARM and Win32 Mobile support tippe

What about Win64 support? Aren't most applications 64 bit now? Win32 is often used to reference the C-style Windows API used by traditional Windows desktop software (even Microsoft does this in their documentation), so the 32 is misleading as it no longer refers to the memory addressing mode (altho...

Re: Frame Time Benchmarking - Question on Time Spent Beyond

That doesn't really tell me the stuttering you're feeling; trying to convey the stuttering through a video capture of your desktop doesn't work for a couple of reasons: ⋅ Video capture is going to capture whole frames, which is before the buffer gets scanned and displayed on your monitor w...

Just be careful of that distinction. You can use WASAPI in shared-stream mode (what everything running on your computer uses), which does use the Windows mixer, so you should be clear that your application is in exclusive mode.

Re: Faster RAM = dramatic performance improvement!

Yea, but when G-sync would it be worth it? Would I feel any difference between 1333 and 2133 Mhz for my 4790k? This is considering I got Gsync already. Variable refresh-rate doesn't eliminate stuttering, it just makes the worst case feel a lot better. Given the following frame output cadence from a...

Re: Faster RAM = dramatic performance improvement!

Given how sensitive humans are to things like stutter, I guess I'd be willing to believe that a tiny change would still be enough to skew those 99th percentile frames enough to be perceptible (at least among those who are extremely sensitive). But I'd be surprised, simply because the delta you see ...

Here is my most basic expectation. By 2016, the big cross platform game makers ought to be tapping into the same types of rendering they ALREADY tap into on the consoles on gcn and perhaps pascal on the pc side. If they make use of async compute on the consoles, dx12 has been out over a year, and t...

If ubisoft gave a sh*t about that, they would have designed a mantle port for assassins creed unity, that would likely have performed far batter on amd cards, and in the future, they should go full steam on dx12 for the lower overhead which is clearly an issue in their games. There is no illusion o...
