Re: Tech Report State of the Union

I can't disagree more with tanker27. (<- quick edit: respectfully. Not trying to pick a fight) Reading this thread, I don't think that anyone (myself included) is upset or mad at TR, Jeff, or the TR staff. It seems like most everyone who is concerned enough to post on this thread and in recent comme...

Re: Tech Report State of the Union

Unless I am totally tripping or not understanding, the last motherboard review was actually May 6th, 2016. It was MSI's Z170A SLI Plus. The last GPU review (which albeit was actually an architecture review) was April 27th, 2016. Exploring Nvidia's Pascal Architecture. The last SSD review (which alb...

Re: Tech Report State of the Union

I thought it was just me at first, but recently from the comments I've seen I'm not alone in feeling that things around here are...a bit hollow. Seeing everyone else comment recently has led me to click around and realize why I'm feeling lonely here (some of these may be off, but this is as far as I...

Re: PSU switch broke?

Finally getting around to RMA'ing the unit. Found out I bought it on Newegg in May 2011. Also while looking at my order history I saw that I had already posted a review in March 2013 when it completely failed then. I had completely forgotten I already RMA'ed it once a couple years ago, and this is a...

Re: PSU switch broke?

I think you've answered your own question: it's a Thermaltake TR2. I'm surprised it lasted that long. Every Thermaltake PSU I've ever owned has flaked out at some point... Yeah, I noticed when googling the issue that Thermaltake, specifically the TR2, has been getting a lot more notoriety than love...

PSU switch broke?

So Sunday night, I sit down and move my mouse to wake up my monitor/projector, and I realize my computer is off. That's odd, I definitely hadn't turned it off. Press power button, no response. Um, ok... I go to switch the PSU off then back on, but as soon as I switch it off, the switch on the PSU po...

Re: AMD Stock and other Investments

My advice: If you get a small gain, take that gain and run. Or be willing to risk it all, but if you wanted to do that, I would advise you read up on options and go that route. To leverage! The cause of... and solution to... all of life's problems. (With apologies to Homer Simpson...) Well you can ...

Watched that video, and you can color me unimpressed. There's nothing new here - my employer has had all of this functionality for years utilizing Outlook, AD, and webex. Also it kinda irked me when she showed me in the video that I could used "reply" instead of "reply all". Seri...

Windows 10 = NT 6.4 It is another evolution of the Longhorn dynasty. It isn't going offer anything revolutionary. Allow me to quote Phil Collins here: "I've been waiting for this moment...since 2009. Oh MS." I'm kinda unsure about the upgradeability from 8 -> 10. Makes me wonder if they really didn't change that much. Perhaps they just said, "Eh let's just fix the UI and slap a new number on it.&...

Hmmm...exactly how out of the loop have you been? Quick recap on what's happened since 2006: In the x86 world: K8 was so successful that AMD took over the vast amount of marketshare. Intel responded with nehalem, which totally flopped. After trying another iteration, Intel finally gave up after thei...

Re: Short password timeout in Comments

I was getting logged out while browsing through forum pages shortly after the redesign (few days ago?), but haven't had issues since then. I just chalked it up to the TR staff bouncing services as they were probably applying various fixes. Haven't had that issue lately, but then again I lurk way mor...

OCZ is dead...

I've been watching the not-so-slow decline of OCZ over the last 3 years or so. Today the coffin is pretty much nailed shut. OCZ stopped trading on the NASDAQ because its share price is too low. OCZ has been hemorrhaging money for years now, and its financials were a year late last quarter. They've g...

Re: How do you protect people from themselves

The most secure way is going to be to set them up on Linux or a Linux-based system (tablets etc.) but that comes at the expense of all those delicious x86 programs that make computing worthwhile. If they don't have root they can't do much, and even if they did you'd be surprised how many browser we...

Re: Recommendations for Cheap SSDs for Dual-Xeon Build Machi

While the RAM disk may not be an option, it does prove a point that the media latency and throughput can play a pretty significant role in compile-time. At work we made a 64GB tmpfs RAM disk for a build that usually takes around 3 hours on (I believe 10k?) SAS disks, and we were able to cut that dow...

Re: LED Developed at MIT That Is 230% Efficient

This seems pretty useless. The article states that when the power is halved by a factor of four, then the light output is halved. This means when you increase the power by a factor of 4, the light output is only doubled. Given it is "230% efficient" (which in itself is a BS play on semanti...

How long will OCZ be around for?

Ok, so I've always heard a lot of talk about people pondering the longevity of SSDs, but what about the world's most notable crazy cheap SSD maker? Sure, they might be selling their SSDs for next to nothing, but they surely aren't making any money off of it. Their stock dropped 40+% in the premarket...

I'm 60 + 8. I quit around lvl 40 or so until 1.0.4 came out. They then botted my character and had it run around and gold farm in a...

I use a T400 at work, and I love it. Very reliable, quiet, and runs cool. Pretty much same can be said of the T420s and old T61s, based on my observations at work.

Not to mention they're pretty cheap (especially with employee discount).

I'm really bummed about the max of 4 players in a party. I like playing with 7 other people. I'm throwing a D3 party at my house the weekend after release, and we're going to have to split up into 2 or 3 games. Also, I don't like the real money auction house and the complete lack of character builds...

I have a pretty good system worked out. I have a friend who stays cutting edge, and he sells me his old stuff for dirt cheap. I got a GTX 460 five months ago for $60. Two and a half years ago, I paid him $400 for the box in my sig, except with a 9800GTX+ instead of the 460. Thus, I stay pretty well ...
