Re: Formula One 2018

I’m amazed that people are upset at the team orders. Part of it is from failing to realize F1 is a team sport and not a competition between individuals, which is kind of understandable given how much focus there is on the driver's championship. The reality of course is that the "Driver's champ...

Re: Standing desks?

At work most of the newer cubicle/office setups come with a hand-crank adjustable desk. It cranks up just high enough that someone short like me can use it as a standing desk. I've seen taller people use it that way as well, but they end up having to prop up their monitors on risers. Personally, I ...

Re: Video card prices

To think over 2 years ago I was debating whether I should pull the trigger and get my GTX 970 or wait for the next generation. We only briefly saw any improvement in price/performance, and now we're back to having worse value from cards than we had 2-3 years ago...

Re: Help me choose an upgrade for my son's PC

Yep a lot of it depends on the game. Even so there are more and more games at this point that would benefit from more cores. Games that only use 2 cores are thankfully the exception now rather than the rule, at least among semi-demanding games where it actually matters. Usually a large part of the c...

I think the OP was just pandering expecting a large number of "OMG ME TOO" responses and to my delight, the realities of real life kicked in. People are diverse. We don't live in a trope of what a 'real' nerd should be. That's a small mindset. http://reddit.com/r/gatekeeping or the "...

Re: H.265 decode requirements with Plex

I use Serviio not Plex, but same basic idea. My OCed 6700K is overkill for the task. My old bluray players (that don't support H265) stream "H265" just fine. I don't notice any drop in quality either. Serviio does it by basically transcoding the H265 files to temporary MPEG2 files, and sin...

Re: 144hz, Display Port Cable Requirements

You can't go wrong with Accell Display port cables. I've tried other brands and Accell is the one that consistently gives me perfect results with 4K@60 hz 4:4:4 and 2560x1440@165 hz. Their 10 footer works perfect for my system - even when I used a Startech 3 foot DP 1.2 extension cable with 4K@60hz...

I'm not sure. But I found that the in past if I'm play FPS games all day, every day long enough my wrists and hands will be really stiff and hurting. I would advise you take a break from gaming for awhile, or least with FPS. Like a few days at least. Yep and when you do play games it's probably wis...

Re: Purchasing Windows 10

In the past, I usually always bought an OEM version of Vista or 7, usually through Newegg. These were always one-motherboard use licenses, and were usually about $110 or so, while the regular/full licenses were almost twice that. Now what's the difference between the OEM for $100 vs the "norma...

Re: Smartphones with removeable battery?

I don't suppose anyone has experience with the Huawei Honor 6x? Technically the battery isn't removable, but you can do it without any glue melting or soldering, so basically no more difficult than laptop repair. The performance looks pretty comparable to the G5/G5 Plus but it's cheaper and has 3GB ...

I just don't see user replaceable batteries as important any more. Is anyone still making such a thing in 2017? LG V20, Moto G5 (not plus), Moto E4 (not plus), Moto G4 Plus, and Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016 version only, not 2017) are about all I could find. Any others I'm missing? From what I've found most or all of those Motorola phones have issues with overheating, b...

Nice to see someone else win for a change. :) Mercedes pace seemed to be missing in Malaysia all weekend but I wonder how much temperatures, tires, and all those fast corners played a part. Might need to wait till Suzuka (if it's actually dry) to get a clearer picture of whether Mercedes is really b...

Given the raw pace of his car I wouldn't be surprised if Vettel finishes in the top 5-6 in the race, maybe even better if a safety car comes at the right time or there are mixed conditions, but the championship really is looking like an uphill climb for him now. It's pretty much going to take a Hami...

It was a surreal weekend. McLaren were "best of the rest" - faster than all but Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull. Both Honda-powered cars finished in the points, including Vandoorne's first point of the season. Lewis Hamilton honored a deal and yielded a position to his team-mate. Max Verst...

Graphics cards are an another example where consumer products have gotten really silly. Amazing how Hamilton controlled the Chinese race with 5 percent less top speed. (Y) You can gain a lot of time in the corners with a bit more downforce, and a setup with more drag/downforce is generally better in the wet (plus Hamilton has been great in most wet races). There is definitely a point ...

I'm really glad I watch MotoGP in addition to F1. What a snoozer. As everyone has predicted on track battles and overtaking are pretty much non-existent. I guess it's good that 2 teams can win now instead of 1, but it's sad that 99% of the "race" doesn't matter. All that matters is qualify...

I agree with others that there isn't really much difference between thermal pastes at this point, especially not enough to matter in system that isn't extreme overclocked at the ragged edge.  Also unless you like re-seating your heatsink on a regular basis the length of time it lasts probably matter...
