Re: Advice on keeping Windows 10 or going back to 7

I'm planning on sticking with Windows 8.1 personally. Spying issues aside (it's hypocritical to even mention this if you have a smartphone), I just can't stand the way 10 looks. It feels too much like OS frankenstein

Re: Firefox memory hole?

I took noticed that Firefox keeps crashing on my system as well as a customers laptop I was on earlier (both v36), I didn't think much of it until it kept happening to his and then later that day to mine... I wonder if we have a bug in v36... I will say that randomly on sites with videos, it will m...

Re: Do you ever get "too old" to play games?

I'm 31 now and have had my priorities shift in the last 5 years. As a result I have less time and get less satisfaction from playing games (could be most of them are rehashed crap). The fact of the matter is there are things that NEED to be done around my house every day. I also have a 10 month old ...

Re: Firefox vs Chrome (Speed and Usability)

Firefox user here. Between the two I can't really see a difference in speed. I've definitely had some weird flash issues in the last couple versions on firefox but other than I haven't had any issues. I do seem to see a lot more chrome users with malware related issues at work. Hell, it's starting t...

Re: PC for the girlfriend... Please Advise

When I built a system for my girlfriend I got her the following: Intel Core i5 2500k (bundled with motherboard) Gigabyte H61M-DS2 ($5 with bundle price) Samsung 8GB DDR3-1600 Nvidia GTX 560ti (refurbished reference card for $90) Corsair CX500 PSU 500GB 7200rpm HDD At the time, SSDs were still a bit ...

Re: Is a GTX640 worth it

Agreed. It's not worth the money spent. Just wait and save for a 650 ti if you're on a budget. I'm not a huge fan of incremental updates like that anyway. You'd really have to go to a gtx 660 to see a large performance gain. It doesn't make sense to spend $150 on even a 650 ti when it's going to bit...

Re: winxp uses 0.5 gb ram on startup

512mb of RAM usage on a system that isn't a CLEAN install is perfectly normal. Just use msconfig to prevent some of the stuff installed from coming up. If it doesn't prevent it, uninstall the stuff you don't need. Also, get rid of that advanced systemcare garbage. That's probably the heaviest progra...

Re: Help me understand..

Definitely not going to be able to help you understand but I'm in the same boat as you. Some people compare it to Vista and ME...which I think is completely wrong. If anything, you could compare it to the changes Windows XP made after Windows ME and 98 SE. The only thing I don't like about the new &...

Re: Help needed asap, my computer died suddenly, can't turn

If it's power cycling itself, a speaker isn't going to do anything for you. You can all speculate what the problem is, and I'm sure someone will be right but no one yet has done anything other than to speculate... Mostly because we aren't anywhere near the computer. At this point you do usually sta...

Re: Help needed asap, my computer died suddenly, can't turn

My guess would be the motherboard as well. Sounds like it's gone. I sell and repair a lot of computers and parts and recently have had a lot of weird crap happening with Asus boards. From weird memory issues, to boards starting on fire (with good PSUs), to just bad QC. Not saying Asus is bad...just ...

Re: Diablo III

I played for a bit. I had no problem with the graphics, art, or gameplay. All of it was good enough to be entertaining. However, Diablo III seemed to be a hack and slash action game with NOTHING in the way of RPG. I was very disappointed to see the lack of RPG elements. Unfortunately, I've come to e...

Re: There can't be "that" many DOA mobos

I think it's a bit more than that. I think it's something called the Dunning-Kruger effect where in North American culture, the less competent estimate themselves are more competent than they actually are, while the more competent estimate themselves as less competent than they actually are. It's k...

Re: There can't be "that" many DOA mobos

As far a 'brain-dead-owners' go... A long time ago a friend of mine was walking through a friend of his in installed additional/replacement RAM. (the abbreviated story...) A friend calls another friend for help... "I've received my new memory sticks, and I have the computer open. I am not sure...

Re: There can't be "that" many DOA mobos

After 15 years of building computers I still found myself baffled when people would bring their computer to me and wonder why it wasn't working. My two personal favorites were people putting 6-pin pci-e connectors into the 8-pin cpu power connector (jamming it in there) and arguing with me that you ...
