Re: Help on building small foot print gaming PC

The first and only PC I had self-built was almost 10 years ago, in 2003. Back then, SATA was a brand new interface, the WD Raptor HDDs were what SSDs are today, and the AMD Athlon 64 was the first consumer 64-bit CPU on the market. I paired them up with a ATI Radeon 9800 XT All-in-Wonder, on an Asus...

Re: Help on building small foot print gaming PC

I am embarrassed to admit that the issue was my fault. I had plugged in the Wii console via component wires in to the DVD input channel, while simultaneously plugging in the PC in to the DVD channel via HDMI cable. So the receiver refused to output anything - video or sound - from any input c...

Okay, slight problems. How am I supposed to install a Samsung SSD in to this http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7087/7367449612_a8ba57ef70.jpg Neither the SSD nor the case came with any kind of mount. The case instruction manual (warning, large PDF), has crappy instructions on how to install the SSD. No ...

Here is Anandtech's power and noise data on the GTX 670 and the Radeon 7850 . Noise - 670 GTX / Radeon 7850 Idle noise - 41.7 / 42.7 Metro 2033 - 51.1 / 48.8 Load noise OCCT - 51.1 / 50.4 May be it is a little noisier. And i do not know how the noise profile is. Re: Help on building small foot print gaming PC

Will the stock Intel cooler work in the Grandia case? Or do I need one of those Shiruken Scythe SCBSK-2100 cooler dealies? I actually like the looks of the Grandia 04 case over that of the Grandia 05, plus the 04 is all aluminum, versus the 05 having a plastic front and aluminum fascia. But Amazon d...

Re: Help on building small foot print gaming PC

Thanks for the heads up on the NewEgg daily deals for the PSU. I ended up ordering this Seasonic model. Now I need to decide on the graphics card. Hmmm - what to do .... ? More powah for long term flexibility, or quiet performance at a lower price for today's needs. My wife won't allow me to purchas...

Re: Help on building small foot print gaming PC

Okay Chrispy_, you sold me on the Grandia case with that pic you included. It looks great, and i think it will fit in well in my home theater, next to my receiver. Now, I have ordered all the parts except the PSU and graphics card. I will have to look at benchmarks to see how Skyrim plays on the gra...

Re: Help on building small foot print gaming PC

Thanks Jambe on the tip for the computer case. Strongly considering it. In the mean time, I have ordered the Intel i-3570 and the Samsung 830 SSD to take advantage of the sales NewEgg is running. Will slowly order parts if they come on sale. Question - do I have to worry that the CPU I ordered comes...

Don't most new graphics cards like the 670 GTX here output 7.1 surround sound via HDMI as well? Is there a need for a dedicated sound card?

Re: Help on building small foot print gaming PC

how about Newegg's Rosewill Capstone 450w 80plus gold psu , versus the Antec Earth Watts 500w you picked? far as the power rating stickers on the sides, the antecs 12v+12v results in the same 444w output of the Rosewill which is rated at 37a. has a larger fan over the 80mm on the Antec so lower noi...

Re: Help on building small foot print gaming PC

If I'm not mistaken you will need a sound card that supports Dolby Digital Live or DTS if you want to wire your HTPC to your receiver via toslink (much less messy than your alternatives) I couldn't find any cheap sound cards to link here, but many upper level cards come with these features. The Asu...

Good point on the BT dongle. $50 is a big difference. And the cheaper processor will do as well.

Re: Help on building small foot print gaming PC

Thanks for the info. Some followup questions: Since I'm here :). The motherboard is fine, except that you're not overclocking, and thus have zero need for its fancy power circuitry. It will work though. Save $50 with an ASRock board. Does the AsRock board have Bluetooth? Looking for that as well, si...

Thanks for all the replies so far. All the suggestions for parts is slowly buiilding up my information store on what to pick.

What about something like this system that I can just stick the parts in? Would this work for Ivy Bridge and decent graphics card?

Help on building small foot print gaming PC

Short version - I need a quiet, powerful HTPC/gaming rig for playing Diablo 3 and older Steam games (not the latest Crysis, but certainly Diablo 3, Skyrim, Mass Effect 1 & 2, and Valve's catalogue) at 1920 x 1080 rez, hooked up to my 60" TV and 7.1 surround sound system in the home theater ...

I like fighting games if they're not too yucky. Super Street Fighter and Blaz Blue I like adventure ones, you know, big questy kinds. Uncharted 1 & 2, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age Origins, Fallout 3, Assassins Creed 2 and Brotherhood, Demons Souls, Valkyria Chronicles Driving games also good, Wipe...

Re: Apple's Secrecy

Secrecy certainly builds buzz. But buzz has to be backed up with actual product that is good, or people will stop paying attention before long (exhibit 1: Zune gen 1). It also helps to prevent the competition from copying your ideas too quickly (exhibit 2: Meizu smart phone).

Add me to the chorus of users who have not touched the Wii in the last 6-9 months. Great party machine though - if you entertain a lot and have large groups over, Wii is worthwhile. But playing just with the wife, PS3 is the way to go. Some PS1 titles can be purchased and downloaded from PSN. If you...
