Re: Your first R-rated movie?

My first R-rated movie on a big screen was Friday the 13th, the original, at a drive-in with my parents. It was a double feature with something more kid friendly first, and we (my brother and I) were theoretically supposed to go to sleep after the first movie. My first R-rated movie in a theater wit...

Re: looking for database structure help

Are the object relationships one-to-one, one-to-many, or many-to-many? Are the primary keys of all of the object types structured similarly, or are they different? Object relationships are many-to-many. I was planning on just having numerical auto-incrementing ID fields for the primary keys so all ...

Re: looking for database structure help

Have you considered using a persistence framework, i.e. Object Relational Modeling? That would be something like Hibernate, ActiveRecord, DataMapper, etc. I'll probably get flames from someone who's anti-ORM. But this seems like a perfect fit for that type of solution.

Re: Microsoft acquisition rumor?

My guess before posting the question was EA (Electronic Arts). Their market cap is around 6 Billion, and there was the rumor story recently about Apple bidding on them. Microsoft owning EA would be a coup in the console market. Though that might cause antitrust concerns as well.

Microsoft acquisition rumor?

Just a wild question...

Microsoft just issued 3.75 Billion dollars in debt bonds, and the talk in the market is that this may coincide with a pending acquisition of a smaller company. Has anyone heard any rumors of possible acquisitions, or have any idea who would be likely candidates?

Thanks.

Re: Your Current Video Game Playlist?

How's Darkstar One, I saw this in a clearance bin for under $10 recently and almost bought it but didn't. It's pretty good. It's a classic space sim, similar to Freelancer or such. You fly around completing missions and buying and selling goods. It only has one ship, but you can upgrade the ship by...

Re: Cheap but reliable PSU suggestions?

I've found that cheap power supplies will usually run the motherboard OK, as they are usually stable to half their rating. But once you add in a real video card things get unstable quick. I've got an Apevia Micro ATX case, and the stock power supply seemed to work fine with onboard video or video wi...

Re: Cheap but reliable PSU suggestions?

The FSP Blue Storm II is extremely reliable and has been raved about in online reviews. I got mine for $59.95. Unfortunately, I just checked NewEgg and it's now selling for $85. Not sure why it went up. You might be able to find it somewhere else online for less. FSP in general is very good. The are...

Re: Consoles Bottlenecking Graphics

You might not like this answer. But I honestly believe slower progress on system requirements is good for PC gaming. Which, along with it, brings slower progress on graphics improvements. I think it generally aggravates people to buy a brand new gaming computer, and a year or two later it won't play...

Re: Why am I Obese?

I just want to point out, since I haven't seen anyone mention it: BMI was invented by a sociologist, not a doctor. It's a measure of social norms of height versus weight. It's also seriously outdated, being invented over 150 years ago, though some calculations of it are updated based on WHO data. St...

As long as we're reviving an old thread... I just registered here, though I've been lurking for years. I'm a software engineer. Most of my career I've been writing software for satellite communications. I also dabble in recording and audio engineering. Someday I may swap my primary career with my ho...

Re: Python, is it worth learning

The question of "Is Python worth learning?" depends on a couple of things: What languages do you know so far? How many are you planning to learn and how much time do you have? Do you have a specific need to learn Python? My personal preferences for scripting languages are Ruby, Perl, and b...
