Re: Windows 10 disable driver update.

Have you tried using Microsoft's "Show Hide in Windows 10" tool? Use Google and look for "download wushowhide" then take the Microsoft Support Link. It seems like a strange Interface, but it does seem to work. Also go into the "Device Manager" and then "View" ...

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update is FINALLY in for me. The "windows 10 Update Assistant", in the end, really did prove to be a waste of time for me. As Noted Previously, I did not have the time/ability to stay connected to a Network to wait for the entire Windows 10 Anniversary Update Dow...

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update

I'm curious, did it reinstall any apps (like Get Office or Sway), or did it leave that alone? I've had issues with this in the past, but it seems to be earlier builds, and not letting Win10 sit for a little (and checking the store updates) before messing with it. Yep, it reinstalls every single use...

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update

I have a question... (Which is only going to have a "short lived use for Me"... (But who knows the Answer may have some value for other things in the Future...) If you "Minimize" the "Windows 10 Anniversary Update Assistant" is just "runs as a Task. It has "NO...

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary Update

I am traveling and I was wondering if the "windows 10 Update Assistant" would "resume" if I stopped it, shut the Computer Down and started it back up! For about 2 minutes I was a "little miffed" that is didn't seem like it would "resume". I rebooted the Comput...

Re: Who is waiting.... Zen

For me I am waiting... Mostly I still try to purchase AMD. It is not "written is stone", but a "HUGE PREFERENCE"... I still have some grudges against Intel, and I also DO NOT want it to end up with just ONE VENDER. (For grudges, RAMBUS is an example...) Very little of what I do w...

Re: Windows 10 Upgrade Hiccups / Best Practices?

From my experience Windows 10, as pretty much ALL VERSIONS OF WINDOWS, works better if you do a "Fresh/Clean Install" rather than an upgrade. Upgrading within a Windows Release, seems to work quite well but Upgrading to a New Windows Release usually leaves a little to be desired. Which is ...

I agree with New Egg... I really do not see any changes on their WEB Site for the last 2 years that I thought were good! I have not cut them off, but there will "come a point" where I also will "just not bother"... There are several sits that I just stopped using because the WEB ...

Samsung 840 Series SSD - Is this a SSD Problem?

Hello all, I have a Samsung 840 Series SSD that has been installed for 3yrs. I do not do alot of writing, mostly I am just reading the drive. I have recently been receiving BIOS Errors on bootup saying "There has been a read error on the hard drive". (Maybe not the exact wording, I am not ...

Re: Brewing raisin wine -- what happened?

Basically... Anything that has not been sterilized has bacteria on it, possible within it, as well as "other critters". (Yeast specifically being a fungi and not a bacteria.) So if left in a warm, read as hopsitable, environment those "critters" will reproduce. ("Mirco-ogran...

Re: 2.5" and 3.5" HDDs

I think what you are asking is "How to change the default location of where user files are stored?" I think that this will do what you want... (There are other ways to do this as well, but I think this is the simplest.) 1 - Go into the folder for the user in question. (i.e. "C:\Users\...

Re: 2.5" and 3.5" HDDs

I noticed that your Hauppauge card is gone from this build? So is there still a need for a 1tb hard drive? Regarding Hauppauge cards, I do like their cards. I have been using them for years. Their Software QC isn't that good! (Also NOW you must have a CD Copy of their software to install the downloa...

Re: OCZ Toolbox question (applies to all SSDs)

Setting the SSD Drive back to its "factory-fresh state" doesn't do anything to 'restore the lifetime of the flash cells'. The 'flash cells' are, essentially, 'damaged' each time data is written to them. Flash circuits that are 'smaller geometry' are, apparently, 'damaged more/quicker'. The...

Re: Replacing a laptop hard drive

Personally I use 'Clonezilla'. It's free, fast, and always works for me. Some of the 'questions' is asks aren't really the 'expected Windows Centric Phraseology', but is works well for me with all versions of Windows and Ubuntu. Maybe if you have a 'spare drive' do a couple 'test clones', just to ma...

Re: There can't be "that" many DOA mobos

I have always thought those DOA's seemed more numerous than what My Experience has been as well. I have purchased well over 400 motherboards, over a period of 30 years. The vast Majority have been Asus, quite a few Tyan, and a much smaller amount of what I will call 'others'... I HAVE NEVER had a DO...

Re: New SSD coming soon - formatting & data transfer questio

Since it does seem you are already using Windows 7 why not just use the Windows 7 'Backup and Restore' options under 'Maintenance' in the 'Start Menu'. I am pretty sure that you 'will need' Installation Media, but maybe not? (But for $15 that is not too much additional in overhead costs.) I have onl...

Re: New home server/file storage/ftp

RAID will improve the reliability of a system that boots from a hard drive While I do think that we are all aware of what RAID will do, that is partly my point. Why 'boot from a hard drive'? Aside from installation, and booting there are virtually no other performance issues with FreeNAS running fr...

Re: New home server/file storage/ftp

I haven't personally kept up with FreeNAS so I can't comment directly on its RAID boot capabities I am not really sure why anyone is talking about the FreeNAS, (*nix stuff in geneeral...), being able to boot from RAID? For FreeNAS spend the $8 on a decent, albeit slow, 8GB USB Flash Drive. Load Fre...

Second - If I use FreeNAS I put that on a usb drive and boot from the drive and the raid 1 will have 100% disk space for backing up/storing files? This has been answered. For additional detail though, the newer versions of FreeNAS do not allow, without some hacking around, shares to be the device w...

It seems, from the post, that cost is an issue. For any activity the primary goals is always to 'maximize the effectiveness of the activities intent' while 'reconciling that with real-world constraints'. (Regardless of what those 'constraints are or where they originate' they exist.) A 'Storage Syst...

Re: New home server/file storage/ftp

If you are really only just going to use it for a 'file sever' I would, and have for that matter, get a Flash USB Stick and boot up 'FreeNAS'... Go to 'SourceForge.net' and search for 'FreeNAS'. It's based on BSD Unix. I have used it for several years now. I have found it to be very stable and fast ...
