Re: Anything to know before I take the Ubiquiti AP plunge?

That would require
1) cables run, which there is no way path in my home, and
2) there time to have fun configuring it. I want to, but being a dad comes first. I'm working on my masters and training to do an iron man. Only so much time.

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2018/07/enterprise-wi-fi-at-home-part-two-reflecting-on-almost-three-years-with-pro-gear/?amp=1 That says it all. I like the reliability of my AP but I'm actually ready to move on. I wanted to do more but it's such a time sink to do anything beyond just...

I'm not saying you should undo your account removal but I guess they let him keep the money and cut the ban in half. The broadcasters also got their punishment cut in half (still excessive and essentially a career endeder). https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/10/blizzard-reinstates-hong-kong-protest...

Good on you. I was thinking of picking up Wow crack again, after 6 years of not playing, with my kids but I can't in good faith give them more money. They went too far with the punishment for what was morally the right thing done in a slightly unethical way (using Blizzards platform for politics).

Re: Is context switching speed the real reason behind Ryzen's success?

Very interesting indeed. In previous tests Nginx previously took a big hit on Intel after mitigation. Is that not also doing a lot of context switching as well? If so, are there any benchmarks to compare on openbenchmark? I don't have time to look, sorry.

I've been looking at Orbi. They just had a Wi-Fi 6 version release, though that's way out of budget. They have Wi-Fi 5 (AX) 2-pack versions in your price range.

Yeah, I'm in the Ubuntu camp on this one. The RAID/RAID-like storage options for Windows are not great. ZFS all the way!

Re: DDR4 Clock speeds impact on performance

Speed is only one factor. Latency can have a huge impact, too. Ryzen 3 is especially impacted by this. More than anything, it's about the Infinity Fabric speed. If you're lazy and cheap (I know I am), then DDR 3200 CL14 is your best bet. You can get a LOT more out of Ryzen 3, though, if you really ...

Re: Upgrading my old i5-2500 machine

Agree with the AMD CPU recommendation. Also, RAM can affect the AMD CPU's performance. Do your research, or just get lower latency CL14 3200 or CL16 3600 and you should be fine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHJ16hD4ysk (Note: this is more about overclocking if you're into that thing) I don't thin...

Re: Storage architecture help

Yeah, this is just too much power. And to get what I want, I'd need to drop in a Quadro GPU and do a VM for Plex. Right now it's all software decode and transcode, which is kinda harsh. So I have only 8 cores assigned (VMWare Free limitation) to a FreeNas VM that has a Plex plugin. It's an older Fre...

Re: Storage architecture help

OK, let me make sure I understand the high points so I know what to start searching the "series of tubes" for. - I can assign an L2ARC to a POOL (which, if memory serves correctly, is a grouping of VDEVs). - I then would configure the L2ARC to be restricted to the data set for games and VM...

Re: Storage architecture help

Can you L2ARC a dataset or a VDEV or both? I like that suggestion. That way I can use just one small ish drive for the games, tools, and VM. I suppose this would be best as a dedicated drive and not a chunk of my os nvme drive? I'm liking this idea. If I ever needed to I could just buy a card and ma...

Waco, I don't suppose you'll be at the BBQ. If love to pick your brain.

So, with L2arc, will I need another VDEV? if so, will it need to be redundant? I have 16 GB on a single stick at the moment, so I will likely be adding another for dual channel 32.

Re: Storage architecture help

So, as cool as it is, I sound roll ZFS? Isn't there some drama around the kernel and ZFS right now? One other goal I'd like to have is for the file system expendable in the future. So if I need another drive I can add one. With ZFS I would need to replace all drives. As drives get bigger rebuild tak...

Re: Storage architecture help

Yeah, I know latency is an issue. But for test vm or old games and pictures it's fine. When I say cache I mean an automatic tier, where coming stuff is on the SSD and the older stuff it's on a disk. I want the speed of running old games off it. Also, there well eventually be 4 users of this. I do have a 3750 with a 10Gbps fiber SFP and a NIC to go with it.

I suppose I should say this will be my for server, too.

Storage architecture help

A computer I bought doesn't have a legal copy of Windows. The plan is for a Plex server. Ubuntu will work fine for me. What I want is an SSD RAID1 cache with a RAID5 (or equivalent) for the 4 HDDs. What the best way to do this? Before you ask, no it doesn't have a 10 Gbps NIC yet. I'm going to put o...

It's already on the box? Storage space with tiered storage is easier? Reuse? Really, no. I'm just lazy and out of practice with Linux. Plex would probably run better on Ubuntu anyways.

Migrate to M.2

So I bought this clapped out contraption on eBay that resembles a computer. It's comically bad. But it works, had a Sky Lake CPU, an RX 470 4GB (which is better than my 7950), power supply, a single stick of RAM, etc. Anyways, the OS is on a 320 GB 2.5 drive. There's an NVMe slot on it so I'm going ...
