Re: New build won't POST

the i5 is based on a dual-chanel mobo, if you had the DIMMS anywhere other than the 1st and 3rd, it wouldnt POST. Unless certain manufacturers put in protection software that tells you on boot-up that the memory is mis-aligned, but, if they have i havent seen it.

Re: USB power surge, system freeze, no boot?

Unfortunately now, the hub power surge warning seems to keep occuring, and when it does, its accompanied by a system freeze.

Im wondering if theres an unstable rail in the PSU, a sign of it getting ready to collapse.

Re: USB power surge, system freeze, no boot?

yeah i should mention, i dont have any usb devices plugged in, heh. but just to be completely fair anyway, i did unplug the ps2 keyboard/mouse just to be thorough. My instincts tell me the PSU doesnt have all of its eggs in one basket, but, shrug. UPDATE: The monitor wasnt getting a signal, and i ju...

USB power surge, system freeze, no boot?

So i have a time-line of events here, and i was hoping that would help in allowing for a pretty good opinion of what happened to me. On my secondary computer, everything has been fine and normal for a while, and then yesterday I suddenly see a windows notice in the taskbar of "power surge in US...

Re: Best Possible setup under 2k?

Well if the argument for an 870 instead of an 860 makes more sense than going for the U2410...id listen, but..my hunch tells me that the gain from amping the 860 is far less than going for the u2410

Re: Best Possible setup under 2k?

Well, after more examination and debate, im thinking about just finishing it off with a single dell U2410. Everything i can determine from what ive compiled suggests the system should be outrageously fast/powerful, and pretty good to look at too.

Re: Best Possible setup under 2k?

Well, im not a crack professional when it comes to graphics, but i do tend to work with it somewhat often as a hobby only, so IPS quality is non-essential. Thats what was leaning me towards 2 TN's. But the point was made earlier that 2 1920x1200 TN's would be a huge desk killer. Im not "overly&...

Re: Best Possible setup under 2k?

well, with regards to application usage. I can have a very wide variety of things going on, usually an MS office prog or two, i do things with adobe photoshop, dreamweaver/flash, sometimes GIF image rendering, likewise its not uncommon for me to have multitabbed IE open as well.

Re: Best Possible setup under 2k?

Well to answer a few questions. 1.) Yes, i have means of getting legit windows. 2.) The computer would be designed for pretty much 2 purposes, heavy application usage and gaming. It would be fair to say i work hard and play hard. 3.) Memory - Good call on that one, i originally was going to use a bl...

Best Possible setup under 2k?

Ive been working on this for a while and im wondering what you guys think. This seems to me like it is the strongest powerhouse that can be built while not getting insane with costs and staying under 2k. Updated with where i stand right now: Antec P183 Black Aluminum / Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower ...

Re: Computer startup issues

Ok, heres another update....i havent touched the computer since my last post about the computer not POSTing...well...for the heck of it i attempted to start it today....and it booted right up.

This is downright confounding. I havent touched ANYTHING, and now its working again.

Re: Computer startup issues

Yeah i definitely considered that issue, thats why on the 2nd reinstall i made sure to tighten the screws lightly. Ive got those bronze supporting screws spread out fairly evenly around the backing of the case and the mobo screws lightly screwed into those, theres definitely no point on the back of ...

Re: Computer startup issues

Ned - Thats what I did before. When it stops posting like this, I take it out of the entire case, just use the CPU, and a stick of memory and it starts posting again, and i reconnect everything and it still posts. I put it back in the cast and it still posts. The problem occurs 5 or so hours down th...

Re: Computer startup issues

I woke up this morning and now the motherboard wont POST again. Same thing that happened before. Sigh. It sseems very evident that something is wrong inside the case, and its probably one piece of equipment. But what would cause a computer to post...and then suddenly stop...yet when i take everythin...

another update: I took everything out of the case and just plugged my PSU into my mobo with 1 stick of ram...and the CPU..and it posted. then i gradually replaced everything piece by piece...including the "faulty" memory stick i mentioned before...and it posted. so right now everything is ...

Re: Computer startup issues

Update: I've disconnected all components except 1 stick of memory, the CPU, and the motherboard...and it will not POST.

I have also swapped out the CPU and and memory, no effect.

Im at a loss for words. This situation is defying science as i know it.

Re: Computer startup issues

Update: Turns out that one of my two sticks of memory was also bad

My new problem now is...windows wont detect my USB device (keyboard and mouse). Im forced to plug in a ps2 board to make it work.

Thoughts on the USB issue?

Update:

Attempted to remove battery and clear CMOS. No effect.

When i start up the computer, the analog monitor power turns green as though it clearly detects something has changed...but...the monitor self test appears...no POST screen.

Computer startup issues

I was hoping someone here might have a suggestion i didnt consider, so id like to give a backdrop on whats happened so far - This problem originated during a power surge a few months ago. The computer wouldnt boot up, and at first i thought it was the video card...so i swapped it out with another on...

Re: Power Surge - PSU replacement - More Trouble

I popped the CMOS battery, unplugged it...waited a few minutes, went back in...still nothing. In addition when that didnt work, i did a jumper reset on the CMOS, no dice. Also in addition, flipped out the DIMM sticks, just in case they shorted out on a fluke, still nothing. Thoughts? If this were so...

Power Surge - PSU replacement - More Trouble

Ok, i seem to have ran into an issue here which I cant seem to figure out alone, so i'll lob this question.. I had a power surge at the house a few days back, and the computer wouldnt turn on. I suspected strongly it was the PSU that failed on me, so i bought a new one and loaded it in, and sure eno...

Re: Time to Upgrade?

From a cost benefit point of view, easier for me just to stick with XP for now, I think i have a reversion disk stuck on a specialized share in my HD. Im going to buy vista for when i build my next super-rig though.

Re: Time to Upgrade?

This laptop is designed as a desktop replacement. Intel P-M 1.86 ghz, 1 gig DDR2, geforce 6800 go 256mb, 50 gig HD. My primary concern is that vista would not only slow it down, but slow down my high intensity tasks, gaming etc. Im also concerned about its bugginess at this point in time. What I don...

Time to Upgrade?

Basically ive reached that point in my laptops life (About 2 years) where winrot has finally choked me down, so im looking at a reformat. Unfortunately I dont have the OS CD, so heres the question i pose to you guys. Is it time to move on up to the east side with vista, or stay XP'ed. Either way im ...

Re: Laptop Slowdown

Perhaps someone could explain this, I ran a webpage which basically had a complete screen of tiled gifs, and my computer nearly locked down as my CPU sat at 100% load and the temperature just kept increasing until it hit 92C and throttling kicked in and pushed down my CPU speed. GPU didnt even flutt...

Re: Laptop Slowdown

I dont think that throttling is playing a part, I8kfanGUI suggests that CPU speed is not changing even when it gets up in the 80s. Im beginning to think this is a hard drive issue, either by being dodgy or perhaps just needing a complete wipe. I just cant say at this point. My computer is using abou...

Laptop Slowdown

Well, ive had my inspiron 9300 for about 2 years now, and my issue these days is the slowdown. I'm usually always on AC power and the thing runs usually around mid-70 degrees C. Anyways, when i first got my laptop, it used to blaze, or so it feels at least. It just seems that anymore it chokes to ge...

I was considering buying a laptop that could handle all the standard stuff but, i want it to be able to handle my gaming.
