Need advice regarding backup boot media

A new laptop is on the way for a soon to be college student. What steps should tech support aka Dad take?

No backup boot media is provided.

As inexpensive as SSD's are, should I purchase one and clone the original, after the first round of auto updates has subsided?

Appreciate your help.

Upgrade 6570 to ?

It may be time to upgrade a graphics card from a 6570 to something equivalent to a 7850. Here's the system I built in 2011 to run Roller Coaster Tycoon; Link , and it has been working fine. Thanks to your help. There is a new game, Planet Coaster, available on steam. It is a bit laggy on this system...

10.2 M for the first 7 days !! Great job !

I did my own point projection for an i3-2100 and an i3-4330. It's like a drop in the bucket.

@matts - here is a link to the Stanford server status page. Status

My initial thought - it is the weekend, possible server maintenance. However, the two you mention aren't listed.

This may not be practical if there are many employees or if bcc was used - are you able to parse the To list and see who was not included? Or look in the inboxes that corporate does control?

Re: Mechanical Keyboard decision help

Plug this search string into newegg: Sample cherry keyboard

I purchased a cherry brown keyboard, as it is "middle of the road" and preferred by typists. The keys feel a bit lite for my preference. It is a Rosewill RK-9000 v2. Nice keyboard, but not backlit.

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

This fix was not made today. I wanted to see the effect of two good rainfalls in order to prove the fix was a good one. I fixed a weeping headlight. Youtube was a great help for removing the headlight, drying the enclosure, and sealing the seams. During one rain, it was easy to see the issue was lik...

Re: TRFrankenbot 2015 - any interest?

A very, very good effort. More points than two years ago. The most wu's ever, at 5,076. I had 2 of 3 PC's folding with the app inside of the Chrome browser. Those wu's are small but seem to yield more points than A4's. I know that GPU's rule.

On the home stretch. Thanks everyone! 22.3 M is our likely target. 23 M points - a small stretch. Can we do it?

@homerdog - thank you for giving this a try.

Thanks to everyone who is participating in the noble cause. Based on the number of posts, my own included, and points one can see interest is waning. Personally, it's lots of fun tinkering with my little systems and chatting with Frankie's minions.

I am interested to follow this thread also. There is value in reading the code of others and in trying new things for yourself. Much of my day is spent working with Oracle so the following may not apply directly to the SQL flavors you mention. I've learned how ranking and unpivot can be very helpful...

Looks like a nice start. I look forward to this. (need to get out more)

30 M for the month of October would be nice. In addition to moving Frankie up 7 positions on the Tech Report page, it would move Frankie up approx 400 positions within all individuals. Currently at 1,553.

An update - the install went fine. I've been using the laptop a fair amount over the course of 2 days. I should have visited the Task Manager to capture some performance stats before the upgrade to W-10. Using W-10 and Chrome v45, the system feels more responsive. The annoying pop-ups are gone. I ap...

I fired up a little-used laptop and after various updates were applied, I got the icon for W 10. I am considering a clean install. There is lots of free disk space. The reason is - this laptop is used for browsing, web games and likely has some viri. Will this work, or should I attempt to clean it f...
