Re: Never gonna give you up: 1366 and 1156

I'm upgrading from a Q6600 to an i5 2550k, Asrock Pro 3 & 2x2 gb Corsair 1333 ram for just £300. Recycling all my other components. Think this upgrade is a bargain and looking forward to setting it up. Only downside is reinstalling all my programmes after I've wiped my OS'es. Just notice my sig ...

Re: GTX 470/480 ... new revision, new features

I replaced my GTX260 (196sp) with a new HD5850 and I'm very happy with my purchase. The Radeon was available when I was ready to buy, at a price I was happy to pay (£200) and Nvidia had no comparable hardware to buy. With DX11 support I'll stick with this card for a couple of years. I only game at 1...

Re: Q6600 or E8400?

My over clock is is a modest 2.8 because I don't like to push the voltages on the mobo beyond stock. Even at 2.8 the Q66600 flies and games are more responsive because the processes I have running in the background make no difference. For future proofing it's gotta be the Q6600 all the time as I wil...

Re: Q6600 or E8400?

FF is right. 680i + Quad = Bad News. 680i + Yorkfield (45nm quad) = Disaster. I'd go with the E8400 (~$190) or the E7200 (~$130) if you're looking to save some coin. Firstly I have the Q6600 on an Asus P5n32 E SLI 680i mobo and it works great. Using bios version 13. You do need to update the bios. ...

Re: CPU lifespan

I've still got an old IBM Thinkpad from about 1995/6. Built like a brick shi**ouse but it still works!! I'll have a look at what processor is in it as I can't remember off hand. It has all of 72mb of ram (max possible!) The CD drive is beginning to creak and it will only work when the power supply i...

Re: Hard Drive Configuration Reference

The best solution of putting the swap file on a seperate physical HD is what I said in my post.

Unfortunately to OP has bought one 640gb H/D so my other suggestion was possibly use a different partition.

Worth a try to see if it works.

Cheers

Re: A few questions about Vista performance

Yes, essentially Creative have stopped supporting the Audigy 2ZS in vista. It works in Vista but has none of the functionality it has in XP. Also because the creative drivers are not fully supported in Vista if you have the drivers on your system it blocks you from downloading SP1. Last Tuesday Upda...

Re: Hard Drive Configuration Reference

Firstly I would look at the following configuration for your drive; 1. 120gb - OS & apps 2. 480gb - swap file and data The reason is I find it easier to keep the OS and apps on the same partition but keep the data separate. Some people say the swap file should be on a different partition or disk...

Re: A few questions about Vista performance

Vista is a bit like the curate's egg. Some good bits and some bad bits. For me the bad bits have been device driver compatibility which has at times driven me nuts. For instance I decided to replace my ageing Audigy 2ZS card with an X-FI extreme gamer card. Installation in XP went flawlessly whilst ...

I can play COD4 at 1680x1050 with everything maxed out 4xAA and 16x af and the frame rate is excellent. On Crysis I have to play at 1280x1050 on high (no AA or AF) and I still get some slow downs and crappy draw distance issues. TBH as I have a 20" monitor 1280x1050 is no big deal but the slow ...

And here I am thinking that going SLi would be the best way to improve the performance of my rig... Games aren't looking for more CPU, or more RAM, but rather more shader power- for me, a second GTS 640. Granted one IS pretty fast, but sucking wind in Crysis for sure. You're probably better off sel...

The 7900GT shouldn't be a problem in Vista, not sure where you got the emulation part, there is no emulation. I've run a Radeon X800GT, X850XT and my current X1950XT in Vista. None of those are DX10 parts and they all run great! Not sure where you're pulling your FUD from but you shouldn't spread s...

1. I prefer Seagate drives. Fast & reliable and good warranty. Look at some reviews and benchmarks. In most cases, the SE16 is faster, quieter, and cheaper. And if you get an SE16 and it fails after the warranty is up, then it's time to get a new drive anyway because by then I'm sure they will ...

Look Madman you must be the only person on the planet who thought Vista would be good for gaming. Your 7900GT is a DX9 card and Vista only supports this via an emulator and therefore defacto it will run much slower. However, do not despair I have 2x8800GTS 640's in sli and the performance is utter p...

Drop down to 2GB of ram and go with an Intel C2D, perhaps an E6550, and a P35 motherboard such as the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L. Also, try to get a better case+PSU combo, or just get them seperately. Raidmax tends to skimp on their power supplies. Take a look at the Antec Sonata III, or something from C...

Well I bought a Thermaltake 700W PSU for my 2x GTS and it's great.

Not an expert but I think a 520 or even 620 PSU with 2 x GTX might be pushing it.

If you're gonna buy 2 x GTX then I would recommend you buy the best PSU you can.

My 2c's worth.

If money's no object go for it. Believe me as a Vista (dual boot with XP) user the more horsepower you have the better. Granted the SLI performance in Vista ATM with NV drivers is not stellar but it will be one day (sooner rather than later). I went SLI with the GTS and not regretted it once.

You need to post your other PC Components. From memory (I have a GTS 640mb) the minimum spec is 450w with 26A on the 12V. This probably has headroom built into it for safety's sake so your 430W might just be OK unless it's a really cheap one. Initially I had a Thermaltake TR2 520w with 28A on the 12...
