Re: How do you pick a motherboard ?

Picking a mobo is a challenge - maybe why a system guide is useful?

I'd look for some future proofing - USB C or thunderbolt, etc. in addition to suggestions made.

Online reviews - when massive - do seem to be another useful indicator.

Re: New source of system guides?

Hi All. Guru 3D has a new one from a few days ago. (Your call on its quality) Maybe in the Virus slowdown TR could do a system guide? They were useful to guide noobies and all of us, and to point out some reasonable combos of parts. I miss them and wish for an update - is annually too much to ask? B...

Why not rip the hdd from a much cheaper external drive?

Thanks for comments on 8TB HDDs

Its clear that external drives by WD are about $70US cheaper than bare drives (why - maybe capitalism?)

Any problem just busting the drive free? I don't need an external.

8TB internal HDD = recommendations

Hi All. I am looking for an internal 8TB backup HDD.

Two questions - 1) brand and type recommendations - should I avoid NAS/SMB models. (I like HGST and WD)
2) Given vendors like Amz and Egg sell thru unknown third parties - where's a good place to buy one?

Thanks.

Re: SSD install detail questions

JAE - Thanks. I know it will work w/o the screw (some suggest tape too) but wonder how important these things are and how they work. The screw socket seem to have a gold coating and does not appear to touch other parts of the PCB. (Which seems similar to offset mounting holes on a mobo). Ground perh...

SSD install detail questions

I am trying to install a Sabrent rocket 1TB into my asus z190 pro gaming mobo. I don't have the standoff and screw - which are too small for local hardware stores (I did check). I must have pitched the tiny bag with them at purchase time. This got me thinking (dangerous, i know!) - 1) is the standof...

Re: TUF B450-PLUS GAMING RAM help!

Hi. Welcome to the TR forums. Builds are fun but can sometimes be challenging. I don't have this mobo. The RAM may well work - even if not at full rated speed. But, if you are buying new, the qvl list choices are (mostly) safer. if you have them try, them out and see if tweaking bios settings can ge...

Hi Squito and Welcome to TR.

Things have been a bit slow on the site but the forums are always active and helpful.

Its good to support TR financially! (I guess I am overdue to renew.)

There is lots to learn and no doubt you have ideas to offer.

Re: Help me decide which graphics card I should buy, please!

Hi. I had a 970 on an i-7 6700K and a 20" 1080 monitor. I updated to a 2070 and 27" g-synch 2650x1440 monitor. Main difference - flying in Far Cry 5 was much better. Lots of very minor eye candy (nice moving weeds and grass) too. (Monitor is much brighter overall and much whiter - if you c...

Another vote for Miele canister - I've had two - both lasted over 10 years and suck great. My current one was about $700, so not cheap. HEPA. A got a dyson animal 7 last fall ($250 or so) and it worked great til it started going erratic - a common issue its seems which the fix is to keep it clean. I...

Thanks all. Yeah, its a plain 970 card in use now, with a i7-6700K cpu (I do see people - obviously not TR gerbils and maybe sharper than me - calling 2k as shorthand for 1440 res) I like the idea of max sharpness when not gaming. Great ideas. I am open to VA panels. I think I will see how this upgr...

Monitor advice

Hi All. I just went for a 2070 gpu and work on a 5 yr old Dell 24" monitor. It proved OK for 1080 gaming with a 970ti card - for the past 3 yrs.

What monitors at 2K - not TN - have you all found a good match? I play FC 5 but am not too demanding about eye candy.

System Guide for GPU and Monitor

Since there is no system guide right now for a GPU and monitor pair, maybe you gerbils can come up with some good pairings for the modern world. Thanks to you all. My HGST 4 TBs have been great - no problems. I went with a Toshiba X300 8TB Performance Desktop Gaming Hard Drive 7200 RPM - 200 bucks, new. Hi All. I am looking for ideas about an 8 TB hdd. My 4 TBs are nearly full. I have been a fan of HGST but am open to suggestions.

No NAS, just everyday box - OS on an SSD. Content is mixed - office work, music, video, etc.

Thanks.

So is the sound card dead?

Reading the "what is your sound setup" posts, and looking at the TR sample builds, it seems the sound card is fully dead. This will mean I have some terrific and costly PCI-e junk, but it seems a USB DAC like the Dragonfly or a Schitt is a better deal, more transferable and as good or bett...

Senn 650 cans at great price

Hi all. Just got a pair of Sennheiser 650 for 315 - Amazon or B&H. I know they were cheaper a year back but this is a great price for a fine pair of cans.

They sound fine out of the serious box, but I assume they will be better still with some breaking in.

Re: Low profile single slot video card question

Thanks all. There is maybe 7/8 inch clearance (left side where fans would be) from the PSU from the center of the PCI slot. No double width likely.

I may go for the 1030 but think it will be disappointing. Any other ideas will be appreciated.

Alas, crumby box for some good components.
