Re: Something's different...

This is the only constructive thing I have to add to this discussion for now...

To the new management: A little bit of transparency would go a long way. Right now would be a good time for it

Re: USB 3.0 Performance on AMD x370

Generally, you are expected to use the Windows 10 xHCI inbox driver, which you are doing. How awful is awful? Are you 100% sure that you're plugged into one of the USB 3.0/3.1 ports and not one of the USB 2.0 ports? Have you tried both the front and back ports? What camera is it? Are you using a cab...

Re: Mass Transit Safety

GO Transit has a recurring issue with commuters that were somewhere they shouldn't have been getting hit & killed by trains. Happens a few times a year... this is a separate issue from "trespassers" on the tracks, i.e. people who are seeking to die by train

Re: new PSU now SATA drives won't load

I don't know why I shouldn't be able to do that now...although finding a working Samsung 1 TB 103SJ isn't going to be easy. I saw 1 at Amazon for $175! The reason that this isn't straightforward anymore is the firmware on the controller board. The current "practical" solution is to identi...

I like the (minor) visual tweaks, and the brightness slider on the notification panel is a good idea. It feels like DPI scaling behaviour got worse somehow, though

Re: MPEG-2 Decoders for IBM ThinkPads

I specifically remember my Toshiba Portege 7020 CT having an MPEG-2 decoder. It kinda worked? I didn't know much about VFW / DXVA at the time so I remember that it worked with some media players but not all that claimed to support hardware acceleration. The chip was either soldered on the mainboard ...

I'm not sure at all I understand what you're saying. Do you mean you're currently using a silicone thermal pad between a heatsink and a Threadripper?

Re: Problem with vcore - pictures included

I highly doubt you are actually having problems with CPU core voltage. If you were, you would be noticing it via frequent BSODs instead of via a monitoring utility. On-board VCore sampling also isn't fast enough to catch dips or spikes, only steady-state voltage for whatever mode the CPU is operatin...

Re: Would better cooling help with high-frequency stability at the same voltage or lower?

To answer the premise of your original question - Yes. Power consumption rises with temperature, this is more easily measurable/noticeable with GPU overclocking. The degree to which it would help in your case, I can't tell you. Taking a look at this --> https://www.anandtech.com/show/13400/intel-9th...

Re: How to remove a heatsink secured with over-torqued screws?

would be safe to assume that the OEM's thermal paste is good enough with that much pressure applied to it? What are the temperatures and clock speeds of the CPU and GPU like, both in normal operation and under stress test conditions? If they're too high, the TIM isn't okay; if they're fine, it is. ...

Re: i5 6500 Crashes when idle

Problem is gone with replacement i5 6500... don't really like that "lightning" has struck in the same place twice. Oh well, it seems the warranty is tied to the physical CPU and it looks like it got reset to three years again, so I guess I'll do this again if I have to

Re: i5 6500 Crashes when idle

Maybe this is too early to call, you be the judge... The TLDR; summary of the thread above is that some Skylake CPUs have a power management related defect where they have problems entering/leaving C-states. I disabled all C-states on the machine in question and now the 100% reproducible crash no lo...

Re: i5 6500 Crashes when idle

It's back in my hands, and it's exactly the same as before. I re-seated the CPU for good measure (and looked for bent pins / scorched pads), tried disabling Speed Step... nothing I did seemed to make a difference at any point. I expect to be starting another RMA with Intel, because I'm not sure what...

Re: i5 6500 Crashes when idle

I'll try not to post too much until I actually have the thing in my hands, but I should clarify: I can't say with 100% confidence that the RAM was actually defective last time, precisely due to what Chrispy said. The RAM got replaced *before* the CPU. And in the process the motherboard got RMA'ed as...

Re: Windows 10 USB becomes unstable after build upgrade

Kinda surprised that it's still an issue... I have an E-Tron USB controller and while on release the Win 10 inbox driver did not play nice with it, at some point in the past a build upgrade replaced the E-Tron driver again but it took me a long time to notice (i.e. works fine now) Then again, I know...

I'm gonna say this is probably not possible. I guess you could try installing Windows 7 to a different drive and then image the extra partitions it creates for UEFI. Is there a particular reason you want to switch it to UEFI boot?
