Re: Dynamic Clock Rates and Frame-time Consistency?

Just had a thought cross my mind. These days, manufacturers (CPUs and GPUs alike) are pushing their cards to the ragged edge from the factory with dynamic frequency boost algorithms. With TR's introduction of inside-the-second analysis, the industry quickly became more in-tune to improving frame-ti...

Re: Which MB for Ryzen 3900?

I can't see anything wrong with your third option other than not gaining a second m.2 slot, but I don't think you'd lose much going with the Strix X470-F instead of the X570 board if you're willing to spend the $50 extra. It has a stout VRM and a pretty good feature set otherwise. I think it's one o...

Evidently these first-gen PCI-E 4.0 controllers are just the PCI-E 3.0 controllers with the PHY swapped out.

Re: Intel 10th-generation Comet Lake in 2020 on 14+++++ nm

Not sure if it was in the TPU article linked above or one of the previous leaks, but supposedly the new socket/chipset will support Ice Lake-S when it eventually comes down the pipe.

Looking forward to seeing power consumption numbers on that 10 core part when you forget to turn off MCE! Gotta give it to Intel for squeezing even more headroom out of that 14nm process, though.

I bet headlines like this one really butter chuckula's bread: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/07/1 ... packaging/

(Note: the article in no way implies that Intel copied this strategy from AMD, and I agree that notion would be ridiculous.)

Intel has some overlap with the Xeon-W parts, but the X-series HEDT parts do very much compete with Threadripper.

The test don't stress memory bandwidth and I suspect AVX performance isn't that big of a factor. 9980XE will come-on op when memory bandwidth is king and applications that do take full advantage of AVX512. ... and how often does a desktop user bottleneck on memory bandwidth or find themselves using...

Re: AMD Zen 2: Ryzen 3000 series

The review is reporting rather higher memory latency than AMD showed in their slides; the latency reported is pretty close to what AMD quoted for DDR4 2667 C14 and supposedly they're running DDR4 3200 B-Die in the testing. I won't speculate as to the reason, but I wonder how much bringing that numbe...

Tire Rack (tirerack.com) tests a whole lot of tires. Their standard test format will be four tires in one of Tire Rack's self-assigned use categories. Re: 16 COARZ.... Not announced by AMD

300mhz isn't bad. I guess I need to start shopping for a simple ITX board. Why are those more expensive than some ATX boards. I saw a deal yesterday for an 512GB m.2 + 16GB RAM for $140 combined. Not a bad way to upgrade. More complex PCBs (more layers) and lower sales numbers probably account for ...

Re: How does Google (desktop) infer location?

Google also knows the approximate location (to within a few hundred feet, likely) of your home network from the vehicle-based wifi scans they perform. This actually caused me a small annoyance after a recent move; if I'm connected to my home wifi when I open Google Maps, it will frequently show me a...

Just trying to apply the same scrutiny to Intel's parts that AMD's seem to receive. I apologize if that's uncomfortable. It's not "scrutiny" to ignorantly declare that no one is interested in a SKU because it doesn't match your pre-conceived notions of market suitability. Especially when ...

I'm sure there are HPC customers that value performance over all else, but performance per watt is still a very important metric in that space as well. As for Goty's usual ignorance, there are plenty of HPC customers out there for whom a 400 watt socket (not really different from a high end GPU) with 56 cores of AVX-512 is a very exciting product. Don't think for one second that even a 150 watt Epyc 2 with 64 cores (and I'm being overly generous t...

Ouch @ 400W TDP for the 56 core Cascade Lake-AP part. The spec bump from the original 48 core announcement is kind of funny, but not entirely unexpected given the assessment from some OEMs that Cascade Lake-AP wasn't going to be a compelling halo part when compared to Rome. It might end up faster th...

If you had to put your router/modem in bridge mode in order to use your own router and now you're having connection issues and can't get to the router login page, it's likely that the modem isn't actually in bridge mode anymore. This should be fairly obvious upon inspection for most routers (the wif...
