I think techreport would be a really good merge for wirecutter/sweethome. The thoroughness of each blends well, and the editorial style is simple and great. The monetization is also key, as wirecutter/sweethome is funded from sales ads.

I too lament the lack of content on this site. I noticed when there was no 1660Ti review and instead were links to other review sites. Little content after december.

Re: RTX 2080 / Ti similar to iPhone X launch?

Coming from a GTX 1080 the 2080 Ti looks good to me (price factored in). Stop griping about the price you cheap bastards. Hate to break it to you, but most people find spending more than $499-699 on a silly peripheral for gaming purposes to be a bit ridiculous even if budget isn't a concern. To add...

RTX 2080 / Ti similar to iPhone X launch?

With the consumer release of the green team's new architecture, and well over two years since the launch of the previous architecture, I was excited for a substantial gain in performance across every price point. Instead, they have only introduced a new, higher price point and left the products from...

Re: Active Safety in Cars: What's good?

My issue with most of the discussion of age is the lack of evidence of effectiveness. I've met people 60+ who are bad at driving, and other 60+ people that can handle a B class bucket truck more precisely than I can my compact. I've also met people under 30 who under no circumstance would I drive wi...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

I realigned the hinges on one of my cabinets. Now they close and looks straight. I replaced the "wings" on my quadcopter that my 2 year old calls "nano" because she wants me to play with it near her more. I replaced the drive pinion on my 1/8 scale RC car... I still think I need ...

Re: Form factor trends

I don't want the ability to replace components because I don't want to have to replace components... Do you want a car with easy access to repairs and common parts, or a car that doesn't need repairs?

I haven't used an optic drive on a computer in at least 5 years.

I hadn't built a system using a new case in a decade or so... I picked up a Fractal Design Define C to replace my Antec P180 and it got me thinking. Though my new machine is smaller/cheaper/better than anything I've ever used and has shed many legacy technologies, there is still a long way to go in ...

Why would you buy a 1070 when you can buy a 1080 for $509... https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125880&ignorebbr=1 It's out of stock right now but they have been going in and out of stock for a few weeks. I'm very tempted but like Airmantharp I don't really need one. I'm ...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

This actually reminds me of using ethanol for fuel. Goodbye rock bottom food prices! If producing cards with lower volumes can survive at lower prices, then higher demand should be able to survive at even lower prices long term. Eventually mining will ebb and there will be oversupply to drive prices...

Re: Bad timing on my new build... future supply and demand?

Yeah, I did well on gpu and motherboard. Got the 1600 for $200 new on sale at newegg with cooler. It is plenty fast, even on pubg. Csgo is gpu bound, so I do better there than my old situation. Case and power supply were good, too. Memory was high but not a dealbreaker. Got a new ssd for giggles, ab...

Re: Bad timing on my new build... future supply and demand?

Shouldn't a 1600 + RX460 be maxing CS:GO at 300 fps easily? CSGO is no issue, though I'm not maxed out. I favor frame rates above 144hz over visuals. I get ~200 FPS on most maps, Nuke or Canals around 130. I use a 144Hz monitor and it is wonderful. Playerunknown's Battlegrounds (pubg) is another st...

Bad timing on my new build... future supply and demand?

I built a ryzen 1600 system so i could have my own desktop again. Plopped my rx460 in and all was well until I loaded PUBG. I play CSGO at 150+fps, and bumping down below 40-50fps on lowest settings is having me miss opportunities I would never miss in csgo. So I went to get a 1060 6gb... but prices...

This also reminds me of one of the interesting changes with air pollution, with all the exhaust controls and smog reduction etc in some urban areas the worst stuff is now brake and tire dust. Its actually pretty nasty stuff apparently. I would expect the IC lobby to oppose brake dust regs along wit...

Re: Waaaaay out of the loop... what should I get?

Thanks for the quick replies! I will run an EVGA GTX 950 by my wife. Just under budget. FWIW, it goes in a P182 case from a decade back. The cooling setup is push/pull and unless the mechanical backup hard drives are accessing I can't tell when it's on over the din of the household. The CPU is passi...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

I replaced the starter element in my gas dryer. $5 part. 10 minutes with youtube and a multimeter to find the problem and order the part. A week for the part to come in, and 5 minutes to install it and try to catch up on laundry. Thank you, internet, for saving me the hassle of dealing with a repair...

Waaaaay out of the loop... what should I get?

It's been a while... The last time I played a video game my Fiancèe was studying abroad in Italy (gods... nearly a decade ago?). I was invited to join a professional DotA team just as that was becoming a thing. I had a wonderful machine capable of running at the highest resolution and settings witho...
