Re: Anyone remember how to fix Windows 98?

Honestly, it's just a whole lot easier and faster to nuke and reinstall. Can't count how many times I did that back in my Win98SE days.

This is what happens when you put a 180HP motor in a Piper J-3. They call it a STOL competition but, from my POV, that's pretty much VTOL

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

Thank Bob for the years I spent teaching daughter the STEM stuff she never would have received in K-12. She was talking about tomorrow's eclipse and I informed her of the 8 APR 2024 total eclipse for which my house is in the path of totality. A few orbital mechanics discussions ensued (especially on...

Came over the wire while I was out. Paul Allen and his cubic dollars have found the wreck of CA-35 USS Indianapolis over 18,000 feet down. https://news.usni.org/2017/08/19/uss-indianapolis-wreckage-found Most younger than I know it only for Quint's soliloquy in Jaws . You have my sincere sympathies. At least you've clearly managed to get a little surreptitious web surfing in. The event is at a local university commons, so I have space to get out of the intolerable noise and post my bon mots. SWMBO is actually sympathetic to my distaste for these gigs and ...

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

Bob save me. Wife's work moved the holiday party to tonight given the merger and impending layoffs. The theme is a tropical cruise. I'm stuck listening to bad 1980’s Paul Simon music while watching DVD copies of Love Boat. Even worse, I'm the driver.

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

I am lucky to still have the use of both eyes, due to a DIY front strut replacement many years ago. I did a 4-strut replacement roughly 20 years ago with dodgy spring compressors. No chance I'm trying that again at my age and lack of agility, even if the struts come complete with secured tophats an...

I've also seen this with cell phones plugged into USB just for charging. BIOS/UEFI sees the phone as a boot device for some odd reason, especially if the phone is in "file" mode.

I've found a 1 TB Dropbox account to be a very good alternative. Just remember to replace the last part of the link that says "dl=0" with "raw=1" to get it to embed.

Heading to stay with relatives in Denver on Sunday. Then about 4AM Monday going to try to run up I25 to Grando, WY. Criticality at 11:45AM. My girlfriend and I are having second thoughts about running up I25 that morning. Apparently, 600,000 people are expected to head North from Colorado to Wyomin...

I've seen a lot of signs asking people to not stop on the interstate and otherwise dangerous practices during the event. My better judgement tells me I'm going to have to find somewhere safe to stop or else I risk being a victim of said bad practices. No one ever went bankrupt underestimating the i...

Go to your local welding supply shop and ask for welding glasses in Grades 12-14, or make yourself a camera obscura out of 2 pieces of cardboard. The backers for legal pads work really well. I did this at my then-employer out in the parking lot for the May 1994 annular eclipse and my co-workers were...

There was a sotto voce rebellion in my corner of the auditorium during today's presentations. We're all "experienced" examiners (i.e. we're old enough to know to get to conferences early on the first day to get a seat in the back corner close to the door) and, since this is a Federal thing...

Gah, how I hate these conference gigs. At least in small classes the people ask intelligent questions, but the abject stupidity emanating from the mouths of people who are ostensibly banking field examiners is simply brain-numbing.
