Re: Anyone buy Home Audio & Video Protection Plans for their stereo?

hahahahahahahaha... So I get the receiver on Saturday, only to find that some bright person (either in freight - Amazon, or shipment - UPS) decided to strap it down. It crushed the box, the packing foam and the top of the case. <sigh> Yes, I do know Amazon covers delivery and I would not have needed...

Re: Anyone buy Home Audio & Video Protection Plans for their stereo?

Thanks all. Maybe with all this money saved up, I could actually use it to go to one of the TechReport BBQs.

And yeah, thanks for the reminder on equipment. The only thing to go bad for me were the remotes.

Anyone buy Home Audio & Video Protection Plans for their stereo?

So I am going to go ahead and pull the trigger on a last year model AV receiver Yamaha RX-V683BL to replace my still very good Pioneer VSX-1120-K. Yeah, sure, I could get a lot better fidelity and power but can you find these things for under $350? And the only reason I am changing to another AV is ...

Re: Best version of Kinect and where to buy?

I looked at the wiki to see what versions are out there and which ones would suit me. I guess the latest would be best. Kinect for Xbox 360 (V1 2010) Kinect for Xbox One (V2 2013) Kinect for Microsoft Windows Version 1.5 Version 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8 Version 2 I know the kinect for windows is the one tha...

Best version of Kinect and where to buy?

So I am completely clueless on the XBOX and peripherals (Look I just got MAME to work very well two years)... But I want to have the best version of Kinect for use in 3D modeling and as a sensor device for Lumo Interactive-like application. Also, I don't mind second hand just as long as it is comple...

Is the new motherboard going to be called "The Fire Swamp"?

Re: Completely Re-think the HTPC?

Additionally... Gaming is a big function within many homes. However, how much is of the computational need is GPU or CPU nowadays? GPU gets the most, right? I do play games on my HTPC usingRetroArch + the Kodi app, "Internet Archive ROM" so I'm still using a single container. DRM (or, aka ...

Completely Re-think the HTPC?

When you watch or listen to things delivered by the HTPC, how are you doing so? Through a visual interface like HULU, KODI, or Plex? You know those interfaces are essentially a web browser in kiosk mode? You are not really using an application on the system but viewing it remotely with the essential...

Re: Ryzen - No 6 core parts?

The cores are quads. You don't do half quads without wasting a lot die real estate. The 8c/8t makes sense. Because if the binning of the 8c/16t don't all show 16t operable, instead of trashing these "failures," they simply lobotomize the failed thread units in BIOS. So do I start the rumor...

Re: Give us 10 good reasons you should win a Corsair RM1000i Special Edition here

1. Although I have never won a TechReport contest, I have refrained from sarcastic praise to the winners. (Like they really need more affirmation of being a winner...) 2. Has anyone put in all matching cables and hardware in a case that has no window or LEDs to show off their build? Uhm, that would ...

Re: Windows 10 as a subscription?

This is just one business model, hoping to capture the disposable company model. This would essentially be a laptop with a cloud connection to MS applications, also being rented. For the big companies, this won't work for two reasons: 1) Big companies lease systems for 3 years. Two years is too shor...

Re: Are you buying a RX 480?

I have a 6950 powering the HTPC and a 7950 in my main rig. Both are non-reference and have been doing their respective tasks well. I do have a bit of complaint of the 7950 in that now in these summer months has been chucking out the heat to where I can definitely feel the difference when I get up an...

Anyone wall mount (not stand mount) your HDTV?

If so, how high? I'm looking to replace the venerable free standing RCA R52WH74 (oh yeah, big honkin' rear project glory!) with a new ULED or LED HDTV. Since the current TV is parked in a corner of the room, we are accustomed to looking a screen that is eye level with the couch. So having a wall mou...

Re: 24p mode on modern HDTVs

rtings.com tests for 24p compatibility. It tests for 24p and at 60p and 60i. They are accounting for how much judder (motion blur) is there before having to insert a control which may help with film but turn TV shows into the "soap opera effect." Here is the review of the Sony X810C: http:...

It is quite a bit more computing power and the OS code has stabilized.

This is a Christmas gift for my wife to upgrade from her S III which had 16GB and a 24 GB card. I'm guessing bigger i...

So I see Walmart has the LG 49UB8200 for $549. (LG 49" 4K TV @ 60 Hz) Buying that would replace my 52" RCA projection (R52WH74) HDTV. It is a rear projection TV but has been phenomanal in service. I've had to go into the service admin screens a couple of times to align the color emitters b...

Re: Opinion: Service Packs to be a thing of the past

What got me thinking about it is that Google, Apple and now Microsoft have gone to a n-platform that updates (adds or subtracts) according to platform. So PC, tablet and phone are the same base. And to do that, a PC must be connected continuously to the MS network. I remember not so long ago when pe...

Opinion: Service Packs to be a thing of the past

Mark me wrong but I think the days of point releases will be a thing of the past. I seriously believe Win10 will be an iterative process from now on. I am thinking the Insider Preview rings will be the real-world beta testers for fixes or improvements. As soon as a bad update or patch is released to...
