Re: Router Recommendations?

I too used to have a DIR-655 (toasted mine) , changed it recently for an ASUS RT-N16.

Consider this an endorsement for the ASUS, they have done some great work on the firmware side, ASUS really seems to have upped its firmware game recently.

Re: My next Canon long zoom?

Go for it, your logic is sound, and the 70-200 f4 IS USM is IMO the best of the 70-200 L lenses, the 2.8 ones are a tad too bulky for whole day usage.

I have one of these bad boys from the early 90s, got it off a scrap dealer http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Island:9441 was actually in the market for a new one, but they cost too much, then found this on the way out, got it for $15 :D best hardware I ever bought good per-key back-lighting How...

Eh... I hope that the poster above doesn't get too mad, but as far as the site goes, if your needs really are simply, buying a premade template is usually a better option, if you're comfortable messing at least a little with HTML+CSS to customize it. second that one, and http://www.brandcrowd.com/l...

Re: SBE time ...or "I'm building it at last"

Well, some people like sacrificing animals/virgins, some people sprinkle their first build with Holy Water, I personally prefer Shamans to perform their "protection" rituals before powering new system on. It's not my first build by any means, but along those lines, I've never really consi...

Re: Valve Handbook

While I don't think valve is dragging its feet on good releases or the HL 3, I do think that the organic nature of innovation outlined by this handbook does suggest to me that they are spread too thin, by which I mean, most of the people want to work on the next "billion dollar" idea rathe...

I'm willing to bet a substantial percentage of the new recruits at valve went with that holy mission in mind :)

Thing is, right now they are either doing too much "playtesting" or working on their DOTA 2 skills to care about us plebes

Re: Valve Handbook

Apparenty at valve you get to pick your own projects, I can only guess that they have many more interesting things in the pot than working on HL 3

Also they frown upon overtimes and stuff, so the people who are working on it are doing it in there own sweet time.

Re: Restoring internet access during a zombie apocalypse?

Seems like everyone is in agreement that they would use wifi or radio instead of the fiberoptic cables. Thats actually good because I think I can understand and research wifi better. As long as you're sold on the radio links, why not try Wimax http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX it's got a longer ra...

Re: Going from 8gb to 16gb? Worth it?

IMHO RAM over 6GB in triple channel mode and 4GB in dual channel mode is only useful if you use a lot of virtual machines....apart from that even rigourous browsing and gaming don't seem to tax RAM that much. I'm curious...do you feel cramped by the 8GB of RAM that you currently have ? and as far as...

Re: ATI 5770 or 6850 for 17inch monitor?

First of all get a "second" moniter, mostly because i'm rocking a 17" too :D I really like browsing on it, 4:3 format an' all. I use the 20" moniter for gaming mostly, like the 4:3 ratio of the 17" for reading news and browsing TR. A 5770 will easily handle one of these and ...

I like your build, only two suggestions, seeing as how you want something for at least three-five years usage. The O/s Hard drive, you could do better with one of those newfangled SSD thingies, again seeing as how you are not compromising quality.they should offer a whole different level of performan...

Re: Heroes Cancelled....

I was sad to hear this news. the show never really recovered from the writer's strike.

I followed the show throughout, I think it deserves a TV movie to wrap up the storyline.

but I agree, the first season was a bit too early for the show to peak.

I've actually got the same screen resolution as you, 17" 1280 x 1024, and a 4850, paired to a recently bought 1900 x 1200 lcd, and i must say, the only bottleneck in the setup i had was my core 2 duo (since overclocked to a respectable 3.3ghz).gaming on the 1280 x 1024 was around the 60-80 fps ...

For all the Vista love I'm usually known for, I kind of find your claims of "20%" a bit untrustworthy. You're usually right as well. :) It is the same with Win7 right now was well, you're giving away a few frames to vista on all but the newest games. I agree with appledelhi, it probably c...

It looks as if DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) is not significantly more expensive than DDR3-1333 (PC3-10600). I'd get the faster memory.

concur, to take full advantage of the memory bus headroom available in core i7s.
