Re: Intel cancels their entire desktop CPU line-up

First thing that came to mind when I saw that title was, "What's the date today?" Then immediately after, "Nah, it's probably just Chuckula."

Re: Algae in our drinking water filter

Btw I was talking about the housing only. I replaced the filter and activated carbon media. It's a 3-stage system, with the first stage being the filter and you could either use a ceramic filter or one that's made of fibers or something similar. 2nd and 3rd are carbon but they're different. 3rd stag...

Re: Algae in our drinking water filter

Hey guys, thanks for all the input. I soaked the affected parts in water with a tablespoon of salt for more than a day. Not sure it really worked. After rinsing I used a cotton swab with ethyl alcohol to try and get everything out. Failing that, I used a sharp pin to scrape off what remained while i...

Algae in our drinking water filter

We have a water filter system like this one and recently we've been away for months, and when we came back we were shocked to see algae in the filter tanks. It's easy to rub them off but you see, I can't get to the nooks and crannies so I tried soaking the parts where there's algae in water and dish...

Re: Ubuntu 18.04.. no input

Ok, I created a bootable flash drive using Universal USB Creator and booted off it. This time I don't even reach the desktop; after showing the familiar Ubuntu bootup screen an error pops up saying, "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system". There are two options for booting ...

Re: Ubuntu 18.04.. no input

Thanks for the replies, folks. I have them plugged directly into USB 2.0 ports at the back of the PC, no hub. And the motherboard doesn't have Asmedia. The USB 3.0 ports feed into a VIA controller but those aren't what the KB and mouse are connected to. I know because I've had this board for 5 years...

Ubuntu 18.04.. no input

So after staying away from Linux for a while because of less than stellar experiences I thought I'd give it a shot again so I got the 18.04 .iso, burned it to DVD and booted off of it for a test drive. First thing, the mouse is completely dead. Then I realize, so is the keyboard. I pressed the compu...

Why are game consoles so efficient??

I was just watching a YouTube video showing God of War on the PS4 and realized how good it is, not just graphically. Makes me wonder what makes consoles so much more efficient than personal computers. The PS4 is using only AMD Jaguar cores. You can't have that sort of performance from those Jags in ...

Re: How bad is Windows 10 Really?

Several old games don't work ok as well, but it seems those issues somewhat existed with those games already with some earlier Windows hardware/software configurations, and Windows 10 just makes them resurface, and, sometimes, makes them worse. This applies to games like Amnesia (jumping mouse), Th...

Re: How bad is Windows 10 Really?

I've been holding out against Windows 10 for as long as I could but recently my circumstances forced me to get a laptop and as expected, it has Windows 10 Home. It's not as horrible as Windows 8 (shiver!!) but it does take some effort to get used to. The file explorer, for example, at first I though...

Re: Performance benefits of upgrading RAM worth the price?

If you're only experiencing lagginess lately and your workload hasn't changed and you're still using an HDD then it seems to me that your machine needs a good cleanup/defragging/clean OS and applications reinstall. And if you can ascertain that you're only running your RAM in single channel mode, go...

Re: Rollin' in my [PCIe] 5.0

I miss the old days when 16-bit ISA was the norm and EISA was quite special. I had a couple machines with VLB... Yeah, VLB was pretty cool back then as well. Too bad it was directly tied to the i486 bus so we're limited to 3 slots, and future CPUs probably made it hard to continue the VLB standard....

Is there a way to know which GPU a particular game actually uses? You can see it on task manager. Ok I saw that my games are using the IGP instead of the discrete graphics. I just got an Acer Nitro 5 with a Ryzen 2500U + discrete Radeon 560X graphics. I only recently tried gaming on it but it seems some titles are encountering issues. I was looking around online when I came across this motherboard brand called J&W. Seems to be based in Shenzhen and seems to be around since 1994. It's no small feat to survive that long in the PC tech industry so they must be doing something right (like pricing really low, most of all). I wonde...

This thread easily caught my attention, given how I'm really into retro gaming these days. I still have some old consoles here like my PS1, Saturn and Megadrive (I don't live in the US). I only managed to save the consoles themselves for nostalgia's sake; no games, cables, controllers. So pathetic. ...
