Re: Retro console gaming

This thread easily caught my attention, given how I'm really into retro gaming these days. I still have some old consoles here like my PS1, Saturn and Megadrive (I don't live in the US). I only managed to save the consoles themselves for nostalgia's sake; no games, cables, controllers. So pathetic. ...

Nah, I'm talking about Intel cloning the entire Ryzen chip except the bus interface (DMI).

"Take that, AMD! Don't be cloning our 386 and 486 chips again!!"

Or perhaps Intel decided to clone AMD chips and made them work with their own socket.

Re: 2.5" external HDD reliability: WDC vs Seagate?

I have two WD extremal drives, one's almost 7 years old and the other is, I think, about 2 years old. Both work fine although I seldom plug them in and I keep them safely tucked in their respective boxes in the closet most of the time. Like, 362 days a year, which is how lazy I am to back up (well I...

Re: How long before your last build started to fail?

My current rig is on its second motherboard. I built it in December 2012 using an MSI 990FX motherboard and just 13 months later I got SSD detection errors. At first I thought it was the SSD (who wouldn't?) but later I was able to pin it down to the motherboard. So far the replacement Gigabyte board...

So could this prevent running old DOS games under DOSBox? I'm still a big fan of old DOS games and those are pretty much 16-bit. Who knows, some of them may even be 8-bit like some really old titles like Dragonworld (1984).

Yeah the RX 580 seems like a bad buy given the power consumption and only ho-hum performance increase. Hopefully AMD will offer something more worthwhile in the mid-range soon.

Epyc... From the same company that brought you the Duron, Sempron, Phenom, Athlon (not so bad but still kinda "what?" when I first heard the brand), Opteron (er..), and more recently, Ryzen and Threadripper. So um, yeah. Epic (branding) fail. Hope actual product makes up for it. If it help...

Re: AMD X390/X399 HEDT Platform

@LASR: Zen doesn't have a clear IPC win over Skylake and their clocks aren't that high even with fewer cores running (simulated) but they've really closed the gap in a tremendous way. As it is, Zen looks like it still has some rough edges so it'll be interesting to see how AMD polishes the core to m...

@Redocbew: True, the requirements of a fridge don't change over time (unless a nice new feature comes out that justifies buying a new fridge) and computers kept on getting faster and more capable, justifying upgrades every few years, but we've reached a point where most folks are fine with what they...

Re: Ryzen 5 - Your Choice?

It seems we're seeing folks mostly either go all the way up for the 7, the top Ryzen 5 model, or they simply don't need to buy right now. I voted the last option but I'm on an FX-8350. I don't wanna discourage anyone from buying a Ryzen setup and I certainly can't speak for anyone but myself but per...

http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/intel-is-trying-to-manipulate-amd-ryzen-launch.html I wouldn't say it's 100% certain but historically Intel hasn't been above and beyond this sort of thing. Re: Intel is up to their dirty tricks.. as usual..

I think, even if AMD sold every chip they made during the time their products were in high demand, it doesn't excuse Intel from shady practices. And as someone pointed out, Intel uses their compilers to limit AMD performance as well. That's kind of like a secret that everyone knows. Given their shee...

Like I said, read the comments on the article. Looks like Intel is already bribing IT folks. Lest we forget, Contra Revenue is pretty much the same thing. Intel will do everything to choke competitors, whether it's AMD or not. See, this isn't just about AMD, this is about a monopolistic company with...

Guess Intel's at it again even before Ryzen hits the shelves. And maybe this is also why AMD is out for blood with their pricing. This is why I said earlier that I will stick with AMD even if it's only out of principle. Be sure to read the comments too. https://www.pcgamesn.com/amd/amd-fear-intel-ry...

I think the worst CPU names were Sempron and Duron. Phenom was also meh. Athlon was also weird when I first knew about it but it kinda grows on you. FX is, well, can't fault two letters but they're visually nice. Ryzen sounds lame but the Ryzen logo looks nice and cleverly done. IMHO I think Celeron...

Re: Ryzen System Build Planning - System Memory 4-ch vs 2-ch

It may concern some folks to know that 8-core Ryzen models only have 2 memory channels when the Intel parts they're competing against have 4. This is partially offset by support for higher DDR4 speeds. The 6900K, for example, officially supports DDR4-2400 while there's word on the street that Ryzen ...

Great job on cutting down. But you need to cut out completely.  That stuff is poison.  Drinking half the poison per day is still poison.  Too true. 2 liters a day!!! Good grief that's way too much. Do you already have diabetes? I seem to have read somewhere that taking 2 or 3 servings of sweetened drinks a day dramatically increases your chances of getting diabetes, and taking the sugar-free option made no difference. I love sweets but lately I...
