Re: Galaxy S8 is not going to feature a 3.5mm headphone jack

Even as an audiophile, I'm being slightly more cautious about criticising Apple & Samsung this time, as Apple received the same criticism when they released the iMac all those years ago with no PS/2 port, only USB, and again when they ditched VGA/DVI in favour of mini display port. Apple's appro...

Re: Here's an interesting one..

Probably not the Windows update as this began happening months ago.

I think we'll start with removing 1 RAM module and seeing if it blue screens, then swapping.. just in case it is a specific RAM module OR if it's having two RAM modules / using the 2nd DIMM.

Re: Here's an interesting one..

Thanks guys.. Yes, I confess I just did the standard 2 pass test (whatever happened by default). It's a very simple setup.. - i5 CPU - GA-B85M-D3H Motherboard - 2x G SKILL F3-1600C11D-16GNT (8GB) - in slots labelled DD3_1 and DD3_2 (the two grey channels / 1st and 3rd along) - Samsung 830 SSD + WD G...

Here's an interesting one..

Hey all, I built a PC for my friend, but it has been blue screening. Runs beautifully most of the time, and the BSODs appear seemingly at random. What makes this really hard to troubleshoot is the number of different errors we get.. KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE MEMORY_MANAGEMENT PFN_LIST_CORRUPT DR...

Re: Bizarre Ext HDD Problem

Hah!
Problem solved. And it's really not an exciting solution.
Basically, the new enclosure I put the drive in was ALSO dud.
I got another one out of the box of 5 I ordered, and it works fine.

How boring is that!
Thanks guys

Re: Bizarre Ext HDD Problem

Hey guys, Thanks for all your suggestions. I'd love to try the jumper suggestion, I just need to get ahold of some jumpers of the right size.. which doesn't sound easy. The >50% capacity problem is intriguing, though these drives have used about 287GB with 410GB free. These are USB 3.0 enclosures bu...

Re: Bizarre Ext HDD Problem

Hi Ryko,
As mentioned, we tried brand new enclosures and they have the exact same problem, the ports definitely haven't crapped out on those.

It's a USB 3 drive which is A to micro B.

Bizarre Ext HDD Problem

Hi all! So, for my workplace I bought 6 Caviar Blacks (2.5", 750GB) and 6 ASTONE 2.5" enclosures to use as off-site backup "tapes". They've worked for about 6 months flawlessly. Then, one of the drives stopped powering up when I plugged it into the USB. Another soon followed. Tha...

Re: Halp! Corrupt DVDs

Thank you all for your suggestions. I got too stressed with it all and gave up for a while. Came back to it tonight, picking up all the pieces to work out where I got to. I put in a DVD and simply watched it tonight, and it got all the way through one 'episode' without a hitch. I started playing the...

Re: Tomb Raider 2013

My thoughts are a bit more critical. See my blog post: http://paraboxgames.com/?p=935 I thought that Lara as a character was great, and the game of itself was really good, but it didn't feel 100% like a Tomb Raider game to me. I get that it was a reboot and we're in a different industry n...

Re: BlackBerry 10 thoughts?

The only blackberry I've touched is a Curve which I purchased for an employee. I didn't really like it, but what I *do* like is the Blackberry brand. That is, the logo, the name, and what they stand for (that is, really powerful email and messaging.. which really, is what phones are for!). I saw the...

Re: Windows 8 SSD - what's taking up all the space?

Hi guys, Thanks for your help, I had completely forgotten the protected system files option. Indeed, it is the hibernation file and page file that are taking up the space. 13.3GB and 16.7GB, respectively. I have 16GB of RAM, and my computer is a desktop. I do put my PC to sleep often, and sometimes ...

Windows 8 SSD - what's taking up all the space?

Re: Windows 7 or Windows 8

There's no harm in going with Windows 7. Windows 8 is fine too, really, it's very easy to avoid the start menu entirely, and then there are quite a few nifty new features, and it's generally much snappier too. Always good to embrace change =)

@Arclight Granted this is a new system and I've only tested Windows 8. Sorry for the misleading title. My first assumption was that the drivers for the presonus don't work well with Windows 8, rather than a hardware conflict or something. @Chrispy_ Nothing in event viewer, I had checked, just unexpe...

Weird Windows 8 problems

I got a new system recently (thankyou to those who helped me pick my parts in a previous thread!) It's damn fast, damn quiet, and it was damn affordable at ~$700. I have a Presonus FireStudio Mobile recording interface which connects via a PCI firewire card. I *think* it's the cause of some system p...

@chuckula - Good idea, but no I don't.. I don't think. @just brew it! - What's 'marginal'? @ludi - No, I tried a BRD-ROM drive, not a player; sorry I wasn't clear. I can't recall setting any copy protection flags, that would suck. Although I recall that the DVDs had trouble simply playing in DVD pla...

Halp! Corrupt DVDs

Hey guys, Many years ago I converted all our home videos from VHS to DVD. We made about 6 copies for various groups of family members, and they're spread over 7 or so DVD Videos (with menus/chapters, etc). The original transfers were far too huge at the time to keep, but I kept the Nero "NRG&qu...

@Flying Fox Well really, it's 1 extra click. Instead of pressing enter, you click on the one you want. Is that enough to become intolerant of an entire operating system? @cynan The 'under the hood' settings as I understand it are missing from Metro but still available via control panel. At least tha...

I'm trying to work out the overall hatred towards Windows 8, and in particular, Metro (I know it's not called that anymore but it's already stuck in my mind). Sounds like a cool idea - although these Xeon's are Sandy Bridge, not Ivy Bridge.. and only a few dollars cheaper. You didn't follow the link  V2 and Intel link definitely show Ivy Bridge. $100 or 1/3 less here= more than a few dollars unless by 'these' you mean the ones available in your mark...

Thanks everyone! I think I'll go with an mATX Build. Can somebody recommend a power efficient, dedicated video card that's good value? Help me choose between mATX and mini-ITX

Well, my existing machine is a loud power hog and it's time to slim down. I recently built a micro ATX system for work, and it is a quiet, cool, yet speedy little beast. I'm considering an identical system for myself. However my geeky senses are tingling for a mini-ITX system. What I'm really consci...

Re: Need to build a power-saving PC..

What about Mini-ITX? Are there any performance considerations for these if the components are the same (e.g CPU / RAM)? I considered this setup: - Intel DH67CFB3 Mini-ITX Mainboard - Intel Core i5-3570 3.2GHz - Corsair 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3 1333MHz - OCZ Vertex 4 128G SSD - IEEE1394a PCi-Express x1 Card...

Re: Need to build a power-saving PC..

How about a laptop? You can tell how much power they need, worst case scenario, by looking at the power supply rating. 10s of watts for an entire system including a monitor... now that's power saving! I did consider this, but for what I'd be getting, they're often quite expensive. I don't need mobi...
