Re: ASUS PN50 problem

Gents, First, thank you both for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate it. When I grew too frustrated with Windows, I installed Linux and it seemed to work fine. I played with it for a bit and then went back to try and reinstall Windows 10. It wouldn't let me install it because of an issue w...

ASUS PN50 problem

I just purchased a new ASUS 50 4300 mini pc and installed windows 10. I made sure all the drivers and BIOS were up to date. Every time I turn the computer off and restart it, it hangs up during the boot, right after the ASUS logo appears. The monitor and all connections are fine. I connected the ASU...

Re: really slow upload speeds

Sorry for the confusion. It's uploading at 500 kilobits per second. My PC on the same connections gets 5 megabytes per second. Any ideas?

really slow upload speeds

I was trying to upload a large video file tonight on my imac and it was taking forever. I checked my upload speed and it was on the order of +/- 500Kbps. I was connected to my cable modem via ethernet. When I hooked up my pc to the same ethernet connection and ran speedtest, my upload was almost 5 M...

Re: Book and photo printing services

I just printed a book with Blurb and really liked it. The photos looked sharp, with accurate colors. The paper quality and binding were very good and all in all, it looks really polished. My only other experience before was with Mixbook and Shutterfly, both of which looked less professional than Blu...

Re: Should I or shouldn't I?

Thanks all, for the kind advice. I already have a CPU cooler and am conservatively overclocked to 3.4 GHz.

I think I'll take your advice and pick up an inexpensive SSD and perhaps another 4 GB of DDR2.

I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.

Cheers.

Should I or shouldn't I?

I built my current system in March, 2009: AMD Phenom II 940 BE, Gskill 4GB (2x2) DDR2 1066, WD Black 1 TB HD, GTX 660, Windows 7. I use it mostly for email, web browsing, and light gaming. The most intensive thing I do with it is editing movies, photos. I was thinking about an i5-4460, 8GB DDR3 1600...

Re: Recs for a cheap pc build

All great suggestions. If new, I was thinking about an AMD A4 as well. About the monitor/keyboard/mouse...I work in a hospital and can probably scrounge up some old equipment. I was thinking Linux for the OS.

Re: Recs for a cheap pc build

Thanks for your time and replies. The econobox is actually unaffordable for these folks. I'll look at Microcenter for refurbished PC's as I hadn't thought of that and never heard of that particular site. Is Microcenter considered reliable?

Recs for a cheap pc build

Hi all, I'm looking to build a PC for a refugee family that my wife and I have been helping and my priorities are: 1) cheap, 2) cheap, and 3) reliable. They saved for months and got an HP laptop 2 years ago and recently the video chip on the MB failed, perhaps due to overheating. Can I build a cheap...

Re: GPU upgrade?

Thanks for the advice. I don't have specific resolution that I game in, but if my card would allow it, I'd like to game at 1920x1200. Any specific card(s) you'd recommend? I'm probably due to upgrade my whole system as well.

GPU upgrade?

I haven't been keeping up with GPU news for the past few years since I built my last machine in 2008. Do you think it would be that advantageous to upgrade my amd 4870 card for something newer? What advantages do the newer cards offer and are those advantages worth the upgrade. I haven't been gaming...

mail after upgrading to windows 7

I realize that I'm a little late to the Windows 7 party, but I just upgraded Vista to 7 and downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird as my new email program. Can anyone walk me through how to get Thunderbird to find/recognize my old Windows mail that I had with Vista. As I understand, all of that old email is...

That seems to make sense. I can't seem to get used to the xbox controllers and was hoping I could have a crack at my son using my PC and mouse for aiming.

Halo 3 on PC versus xbox

This may be a real newb question, but is it possible for me to play my son on halo 3 with him on his xbox 360 and me on my pc? Can we do this over a shared wireless network? Do we both have to join xbox live to do this?

4870 core clock speed seems wrong

I have a Sapphire 1 gb 4870 and cpu-z is showing its memory clock at 900 MHz, but the core clock only reads 500 MHz. Any idea why? Seems like the core should be 750.

Re: What should I do with an extra quad core 8400?

Thanks for the advice re: the Gigabyte mobo. I'm leaning toward building a pc to play around with and try to overclock. If I don't kill the cpu, maybe I'll retask it into an htpc or home server. Thanks for the advice!

What should I do with an extra quad core 8400?

I've got a pretty good system at home and don't particularly need another computer, but a friend had an intel qcore 8400 and gave it to me. I've got 2x2gb of ddr2 1066 ram and a spare dvd burner and hd lying around as well. I was thinking of just buying a cheap case, psu, and mobo and building a sys...

All right...I'll consider a new build. Again, he's going to use it for email and web browsing. I really think integrated graphics should be fine. What's your best sub $400 build in a micro-ATX or mini-ITX form factor? BTW, I've got 2x2 GB of OCZ DDR2 1066 ram already that I can use in it, so if you ...

Re: Upgrading my dad's computer

Thanks for your kind advice. The upgrade I was thinking about would be a gigabyte micro-ATX mobo with an amd dual or triple core AM3 cpu and some new ram. If I can't use his oem copy of Windows, I'll spring for Windows 7. All he really does is email or websurf and I thought the radeon 4200 integrate...

Upgrading my dad's computer

Hi, I'm somewhat new to building systems, but I built my first earlier this year for myself and all went well. My wife says I'm crazy and I should just buy my dad a new Dell, but he has an old Dell now with a pentium 4, running Windows. It's really slow and I was thinking of upgrading it by swapping...
