Re: [ZDNet] How SSD Power faults scramble your data

It would cost a lot of money. Not because adding an array of capacitors bumps the bill of materials (BoM) to any significant degree. Instead, it costs a lot of money if the much more expensive enterprise products are being replaced by cheaper consumer-level products with much lower pricetags. One co...

Re: giving each .iso a drive letter?

Aside from that, it would be great to have a Daemon Tools-like tool for Linux. You could try Gmount-ISO though, its available from Add/Remove programs or Synaptic. I'm really curious how that doesn't constitute a "Daemon Tools-like tool for Linux". You can mount isos. You have a GUI to do...

Re: Unix noob adventures

All of that is no knock against FreeBSD, rather, it is just to say that it was taking more time to learn than Ubuntu, and it was enough of a frustration that, coupled with the fact that the web server at work is Linux, I decided to focus on Ubuntu Server. Fair enough, you should pick something that...

Re: giving each .iso a drive letter?

When you go to Places -> Home folder, you'll see a left bar containing your mounts. Either in 8.04 or 8.10 an Eject button was added, allowing you to easily unmount things like a USB stick, CD/DVD drive or other removable storage. Doesn't that work? Aside from that, it would be great to have a Daemo...

Re: Unix noob adventures

In all my experiences, FreeBSD proved a more "just works" mentality than any Linux experience i've ever had. Although installing FreeBSD is not as sleek with a graphic installer etc, the actual setup of FreeBSD is piece of cake with ports tree. Why don't you download Virtualbox and play wi...

Re: Linux distributed files systems

Something like rsync or rdist will do fine. Basically you want live synchronisation of files between multiple systems. This could be done on any filesystem, on any OS.

You're thinking about gaming in a VM?

Just finished some Ballance in Virtualbox, works great. They use Wine to wrap DirectX to OpenGL and have their own OpenGL acceleration already built-in. It works pretty smooth actually. :)

Re: Which is Ideal hard disk for working Large Files

So how large is your database? Cause i don't understand you people talking about I/O performance if the database is only 20-30 megs big; WHAT I/O ? Only updates (mutations) will be written to disk; the rest will float in RAM and your disk will be idling under the heaviest of (read-only) load. The ma...

Re: 3.2GHz Phenom II listed

Independent clockgens means core1 runs at 2GHz and core2 runs at 3GHz for example. I believe this is not possible with the current generation of CPU's. Sure we have CoolNQuiet and EIST to lower voltage and clock frequency; but it cannot control the frequency and voltage of a single core. For example...

Re: 3.2GHz Phenom II listed

Most important of the Phenom II is that it has a very low idle power consumption, unlike Intel's Core i7 offerings. So its now possible to build a high-performance system having a very low idle power consumption (~40-50W). Personally, i think AMD would be better off making the cores asynchronous, me...

Re: a newer small green system build

If you want decent audio pick onboard sound. If you want good audio pick S/PDIF digital output - all you need from your computer for 100% intact sound. You still need an amplifier/DAC to convert the digital sound into analog signals ofcourse, but due to the radiation in your computer case that's rea...

Re: Need to build Small, Quiet and Efficient File Server

Since mostly only the IGP-chipset with onboard video are very power efficient, that is your best bet. So: AMD 780G / 790GX or nVidia GeForce 8200/8300 or earlier should be very efficient. Mini-ITX there is also the Jetway JNC-something - which is Socket AM2+ and has either AMD 780G or GF 8200 chipse...

Re: ICH10R RAID0 Slow Performance - Help Needed

Totally untrue FUD in this thread: - software/onboard/chipset RAID uses high CPU utilization - totally untrue for simple RAID levels not involving parity and also for simple RAID5 drivers. Only advanced RAID5 drivers have higher CPU utilization due to write-back buffered writes which speed up sequen...
