well it's getting pretty dark here but there are still some clouds. The crickets are out like it's almost sunset or something, which is kind of wild.

Re: Think you're going to repurpose that USB HDD? Think again

If you really cared in the first place you would have purchase both a 2.5" enclosure and standalone 2.5" HDD. This is a dumb statement, and saying it makes you look dumb. These drives may be purchased and used as external drives, but when the USB crap hits the fan, it'd be nice to try to ...

Re: Eclipse on August 21

We're supposed to get around 95% coverage in my neck of the woods. That's good enough for me. It's my daughter's first day of school and they'll be viewing the eclipse somehow. When I was in 8th grade there was a partial eclipse, and we viewed it using some sort of pinhole cardboard apparatus we mad...

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

The self-taught ones are often better, because they're genuinely interested in what they're doing instead of just "going through the motions". A recent hire at work is a good example -- this guy showed up at a job fair type event, and really impressed the people he talked to. He got invit...

Re: StarCraft: Remastered

From the SC:R launch event, The zerglings have fingers ! It was a super informal tournament played for no money, pride only, among the best foreign StarCraft players of all time. And these guys had a ton of fun putting it together and casting it. I missed this particular match, but this clip had my ...

I dunno, they go for $60-70 on eBay for a console and some good-condition controllers, but I'm more interested in playing the games.

Re: Final Fantasy Series on Android

The music in FF6 Advance is out of tune in places (particularly the battle theme). I played it on a GBA SP back when it released, because I was super excited to revisit it, and was immediately disappointed. They also "fixed" many of the translation quirks I grew to love - "Son of a su...

Re: Final Fantasy Series on Android

This is not totally relevant, but I wish Squaresoft hadn't sold out to the freemium ass cancer. Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire is a freemium which looks like a reskin of Mobile Strike. These types of games are simply toxic to the gaming world. Certain people are vulnerable to them the way others ar...

Re: Console peasants....

It's adorable that you guys are still arguing based on technical merits for 12-year-old systems, but again, it comes down to where the games you want to play are. If you don't care about Sony exclusives then just get a Blu-Ray player. If everything you want to play already has a PC port why bother? ...

If they (4,5 & 6) are ported from the GBA versions, then they should be really good (aside from the controls since Idk how good they are implemented).

They're not. They've all been rewritten and graphics enhanced. FF4 is based on the DS version with 3D graphics and such.

In that pic are a Genesis, SNES, NES, Saturn, and N64. Not plugged in right now is a Japanese PC Engine CoreGrafx, which is the TurboGrafx 16. All plugged into a 20" CRT.

My wife and I were playing Killer Instinct tonight.

About half-way through the Terran campaign of the original StarCraft (Finished Norad II where you recruite General Duke ). So far it's StarCraft, which is the highest compliment. They really did a great job on the graphics, and the gameplay is identical. Also watched a bit of the Day[9] stream. Thos...

Re: Final Fantasy Series on Android

I have 1 and 6 and they're not bad, but not great. The translation has been re-done, which makes it maybe more accurate but it lost some of the charm from SNES FF3. The touch controls aren't too shabby, and at least 6 has controller support. The difficulty on both has been dropped a bit, which means...

The game is now available to install. Nice that I work from home is that I can install it. Bad is that I'm still at work and can't play.

I could, however, have the launch stream/event on in the background, hosted by the Brothers Plott: https://www.twitch.tv/day9tv

Re: Your Impressions of Curved Monitors

The only curved monitors should be curved out toward the user, like the kind I play my Sega tapes on. I don't have much personal experience with a curved LCD, but I shift around in my chair all day. I'm sure I'm sitting at suboptimal angles for a big chunk of my day and I don't see how the curve wou...

Re: OK TR, where's the Vega OMG Unboxing Story?

Perhaps slightly more seriously while it's great that TR got review samples, the rumors are that basically everybody got their samples at the last minute with a pretty short time window in which to complete the reviews. If TR has to delay another review because of insufficient time then I'm not bla...

Re: This G3258 goes to 1.7V

I worked in a local PC shop in 1999 and 2000. When Socket A came about, we actually took the HSFs apart and tried to relieve a bit of the pressure from the clip. And it worked - temps were fine and it was a little easier to install the heatsink. Right or wrong, I dunno (probably wrong) but it made f...

Re: OMG ThreadRipper Review Roundup

The DAW comparison is both unique and relevant, for example, though Jeff kind of spoiled it on Twitter - Threadrippa ain't for audio workstations. Which is fine, because Avid only endorses Intel builds anyway. I like the DAW Bench tests as well. I don't think you can say that Threadripper isn't sui...
