Re: Econo box with less gaming focus

2x4 GiB today plus 2x8 GiB or 2x16 GiB in the future is a viable option when the current budget is tightly constrained. Thanks, JAE. That's what we'll do then. It was what I had originally planned but I've seen 1x8 at prices slightly lower. You are correct that it'd still be trivial to take this th...

Don't do it. Or do. Who am I to tell you how to live? Not helping here. I'm having a Bourbon right now, if that helps. (Not!) Wild Turkey 101, if anyone's curious. (In spite of what you might have heard, it's decent. Stupid Whiskey snobs have decided it's uncool for some reason...) I also like Wild...

Re: Econo box with less gaming focus

So thanks to early Black Friday deals, I nabbed a PowerColor RX 560 4GB for $75 on Newegg yesterday. I was able to make my friend see reason on a perf/$ basis, if nothing else. He figured if I could get faster for the same money I might as well.. Saw it mentioned on PC World but unfortunately the sa...

Re: Big Screen 1080p

I think you got me sold on this one. Definitely fits the bill, and apparently I can get it $50 cheaper at best buy with a less fancy remote. I'm looking at this same panel. I found some YouTube videos showing that it's apparently got very low input latency, too. Might be a good panel for gaming, an...

You can't live a life of regret, always looking back. Live it going forward. Time only moves in one direction, certain sci-fi universes excepted.

Unsweet iced tea is good when you just need something cold to drink

I gave up soda in January at my doctor's insistence. Good ol' plain iced tea is way better. Between tea, black coffee (just a plain old drip-brew maker, nothing fancy), and water, I don't have time to drink anything else.

Based in part on this glowing review from the Wirecutter: https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-tv/ we purchased a TCL 55P605 for a presentation screen for work, and the screen looks very nice. I can not speak to how movies or TV look on it, but I would say it's worth your time giving it a look. I...

Well I opened my laptop, fired up Outlook, and logged into Skype for Business (formerly known as Lync) and then remembered that I'm one of those using a few vacation days this week and quickly shut the lid. I hope nobody saw me.

Look up in the address bar on the right hand side. It might not POP UP, but rather just show the icon. I'm not sure if that's a website setting or a Chrome decision that makes it pop up at you, but it should be there. oh, hey, good call. It didn't jump out at me like I thought I remembered it doing...

What JBI said about vinyl. Session musicians made a good living "way back" in the 70's, 80's and 90's just popping in at the studio for a half-day's work on their designated parts. Many of these tracks were recorded with the instrument plugged directly into the panel, bypassing any amp/sp...

German. The ".de" TLD is Germany. And if you'd use a modern browser, there would be a "Translate" button for you to click.

There's not one for me in Chrome, which is weird.

I'm in a conference call where someone got another call and put the conference call on hold. So we're listening to on-hold music and the guy saying "thanks for holding".

Re: GCC errors with compiling C code.

It depends on the emphasis of the college and professors. Some colleges are focused on prepping people for MS and PhD work, and others are focused on teaching. The university I attended was very focused on low-level coding and high concepts, which I really liked, but the most useful thing I ever le...

Re: The iPhone got forked!

Verizon uses bands 1 through 5. The OP5t supports all of Verizon's bands. But I'm occasionally in an area where all that's available in CDMA, and there'd be no reception in those areas.

My beef is I want to choose when it's authenticated and when it's not. I feel like the fingerprint authentication system was perfect. I feel like the second-gen touch sensor in the 6S Plus and my wife's 7 Plus (edit: and in my Pixel 2, for that matter) just can't be topped. I touch the sensor when I...

I can leave it disabled, sure...so then what did I spend $1000 on? So, there's this phone vendor called OnePlus... Not really the point, but until OnePlus makes a phone that works on Verizon they can go to hell. Preach. I'll be first (or maybe second) in line for the OnePlus6 if it has a CDMA radio.

I just like having control over when things happen. If that's the future of Apple, I got out at the right time. let's not pretend that because they released a white paper saying "it's completely insecure" that suddenly it's secure. just because they agree it's terrible doesn't mean it's no...

Probably a bigger concern is getting through multiple college programming classes (75% of the bachelor curriculum at least) without ever running into or reading about the FSTREAM class is probably an issue all of its own. Yes, I know, you go to use Apple Pay and you're already looking at the phone. You go to log into an app that supports biometric logins and it automatically unlocks.

That means I have no control over when I'm authenticated.

Re: The iPhone got forked!

That’s the real Face ID revolution. Since you’re almost always looking at your iPhone while you’re using it, Face ID enables what I call “continuous authentication.” That statement right there is a crock. You mean to tell me that if you show your phone to someone else it'll lock? My guess is no, wh...

Fun cross-platform stuff from Microsoft Connect 2017

I get the feeling I'm one of a very few people around here working in Windows and Microsfot tech exclusively, and almost certainly I'm the only one who cares about what's coming for Xamarin, but some of this stuff is exciting. There's a ton of new tech to get one vendor's crap running on another ven...
