Upon further review...

I think it is quite likely that those people were supposed to look a bit.... 'odd'; as that makes them more memorable. You don't want a wall flower as a spokesperson. They are supposed to look normal so you can identify with them, but not so normal that you forget about them.

Just so you know,
that model does not have the AGP slot. Depending on how much you are paying, etc. You may be better off getting a used G4. Especially if you are planning on using OSX at all.

Huh? On one hand, you say that Macs are stereotyped for those that are "4. not technically oriented"; but then don't want them to break that stereotype; you complain that they use 'techies' in the ads. I think the point is, that they are *windows* techies; and *choose* to use Macs. You not that Mac ...

I think you are missing our point. For an institution like a university, it may *not be cheaper* to build you own. For one person it can be because their time is 'free'. But look at my list above, UF (or your department) will have to pay for all of that. If it takes $200 to research, order, assemble...

I also agree with DiM (except I wouldn't say Dell, but rather Apple  --particularly the eMac... but I digress) Don't forget to add in the paid time it takes to research all the parts, order all the parts, organize them, troubleshoot problems, replace items, return items, catagorize warrantees,...

One word: Hotswap Sorry, you have old info. The xServe IDE drives are hotswappable. Next word: 15000 RPMs yep, that is faster, and better. But again *how much* better. using the Dell/Apple comparo, if you want 15K, The dell will give 108GB for $2100; and all three will go through one 160 MB/s bus T...

Steel I'll bet you G4's to Durons that if 4 SCSI drives on an U160 card were benched against 4 ATA drives on the internal ATA in an XServe, the SCSI drives would win in most typical high end server tasks. Well, how about 3 scsi's on one controller, versus 4 IDE's on 4 separate controllers?? I ask be...

z-man So, even if it is faster, cheaper, cooler, larger....they are still fools??? That is mighty open-minded of you. And it doesn't really matter which ATA it is, since it only has one drive on it, it won't hit the max peak anyway. Blue, SCSI can hit 10k and 15k rpm, which makes them considerably f...

No, it is ATA 100, four drives, four separate controllers. Max theoretical is 266; just like max theoretical for SCSI 160 is 160. Neither will be reached in real world.

erm... the one you are refering to is not 'fastest' but 'ulitmate'

Yes Apple decided to go with IDE and not SCSI; not sure why; I would assume it has to do with their target markets. You can, of course, add a SCSI card or two in the PCI slots available.

Z-Man, What it can be used for will depend on what the specs are, and how they handle the UI. Many Mac shops may prefer to not have to also deal with Windows or Linux or whatever. It may also be useful for certain renderfarms, assuming they take advantage of Altivec. For web hosting and such, they m...

I believe the eMac HD is 7200rpm

From what I can tell, the Dell site is mistaken at one point, and the FSB is really 100Mhz on the 2200

There are also a lot of issues that favor the eMac, that are not directly Specs.

Hey Derek, I didn't mean to be quite so harsh on my post. I was thinking of VooBass's post, and so I reacted a little worse than intended. OEM marketing is different, there are reasons for it; some make sense, some don't. But that is true for a lot of industries. As for schools, they don't tend to b...

Sorry, I was looking at the eMacs that you could actually, you know, buy . Um, these are aimed at schools, and schools can buy the $999 version also. Since *you* were talking about schools buying them, it makes sense to include the $999 version also. Why do you think schools can't buy the low end v...

I say go for it now. Unless there is one specific thing you can't live without, build it now. Now matter how long you wait, you will always be 'better off' waiting 2-3 more months. Of course, that means you will never get a new machine. It is the nature of comps that something new is right around th...

A router would not be overkill, and would probably be your best solution. I would take back the switch you just bought, and get a Linksys or Netgear, or whatever, router. They are pretty cheap, just be sure you get one with 4 ports built in. This will allow you to set up the machines to get their IP...
