Re: OMG, a 7.6 TB 2.5" SSD...does this really exist?

The system-managed page file in Windows 10 1507 and Windows Server 2016 and beyond is at minimum 1/8th RAM or 32 GB, whichever is smallest. It's also more aggressive about down-sizing (in theory). Assuming you force the system crash dump setting to 'small memory dump'. Compare with Windows 7, when ...

I'll also call "BS" on advice to twiddle around with pagefile settings, and especially to those who delete it. On one hand, you hear people say "it doesn't cause problems". Then the truth comes out some weeks or months later. They get blue screens now and again, or other wacky c...

Re: LotR TV show on Amazon

I thought it was Peter Jackson. He was given carte blanche by New Line after the success of the LOTR. And a lot of the filler was from Tolkien's other works (not completely fabricated) Whatever the cause, it was not done well. Not enough material for 3 movies, or probably even 2. Yeah, I definitely...

Re: Win10 still capable of activating on Win7 keys, apparently...

In an ideal world, we'd get the LTSB as a paid option, and the "please harvest my data and bombard me with adverts" as the freemium version. Sadly, everyone gets lumbered with the freemium rubbish even if they don't want it and paid for their OS. It's pretty clear at this point that far f...

Re: Win10 still capable of activating on Win7 keys, apparently...

I've not seen a single ad in the operating system . In apps? Yes. From the OS? No. You think OS X, iOS, Linux, or Android are any better from that perspective? Not even close. None of my Linux apps show me ads. If you didn't purchase the product, you are the product. Most desktop Linux distr...

selling all the personal data they collect through Cortana, etc. So tired of seeing this FUD. Provide one shred of proof that it's happening. The proof is simple - did you *pay* for Windows 10? (A product that likely cost 100s of millions to develop) So they make their money somewhere. No for-profi...

Re: Win10 still capable of activating on Win7 keys, apparently...

Windows 10 is a free operating system. Microsoft are just pretending that the offer ended, but their business model entirely depends on getting Win 10 onto as many machines as possible, and selling all the personal data they collect through Cortana, etc. I mean, even better for them if a bunch of pe...

Re: Battletech game coming out

I sometimes purchase games early...sometimes I purchase them in 2014 and then wait until 2017 to play them. For me it's a question of wanting to fund development to help get a better product at the end. If pre-ordering whatever this game is won't help fund development then you're taking risk with z...

Re: Battletech game coming out

I'm so excited by it that against all my better judgement I'm considering pre-ordering the thing at full price... something I haven't done since preordering Max Payne 3 and playing precisely 30 minutes of it and vowing never to be such an idiot ever again. Someone refresh my memory why I shouldn't p...

Well, there are fancy emulation tricks... GOG just pre-configure and package self-contained DOSBox setups with most old DOS games, so you don't need to set it up yourself.

Re: How bad is Windows 10 Really?

I've been using Win 10 for just over a year and a half. As an actual user-experience, Win 10 is just fine... once you turn off a bunch of irritating bloat, it's a solid successor to Win 7. When it comes to privacy however, the only way you can (vaguely) manage to disable all/most of the invasive nas...

Re: Mobile browser with permenant private mode option?

That's the exact thing that confounds me... every browser on Android is like this - there'll be a bug report or feature request that's been open for at least a year or two, sometimes much longer, where maybe a dev will state that it's on the to-do list... and then nothing, for years. FOSS at it's f...

Re: Mobile browser with permenant private mode option?

I just can't wrap my head around the idea that such a simple thing as a settings switch to launch the app directly into a mode it already supports, and that you can manually launch by just clicking a button, could be so monumentally difficult that *no* browser dev has cracked it yet. I wasn't reall...

Re: Mobile browser with permenant private mode option?

Hmm, well I just stumbled upon a partial solution - Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers (like Brave) have long-press shortcuts that you can drag to the home-screen, and one of those is to open a new incognito tab... so I can just substitute that shortcut for the main app icon, and always launch...

Mobile browser with permenant private mode option?

Is anyone aware of any Android mobile browser that allows "incognito" to be set as the default mode, without being an explicitly privacy-centric browser? I don't want TOR, or half my web traffic filtered, and I'd really prefer a properly open-source option like Firefox... I essentially jus...

Hehe, well, for gaming, it's basically identical performance *with* the overclock (Over the lowly, but remarkably resilient 3770k I had before, which ran at an easy 4.4 OC for the past 4 years). I guess that *might* improve a little over time as more games make use of DX12/Vulkan threading features,...

If it were me, doing professional engineering work with 128GB of RAM i'd definitely get ECC RAM which requires a Xeon. Re: Can anyone clear up - safest 3200MHz RAM approach?

Thanks all for the input. Much appreciated! The ‘high’ DDR4 voltage (1.35 to 1.5V) that we were using on the board shouldn’t have caused any issues since the memory controller in Haswell-E can actually support DDR3 and DDR4, although only DDR4 is being implemented. DDR3 memory kits run at 1.5V, so t...

Re: Can anyone clear up - safest 3200MHz RAM approach?

Interesting. Thanks guys. So, seeing as Intel specifically only state support for RAM operating at 1.2V, is there a chance that 1.35V could cause damage over time? Or is that unlikely? The guy I'm buying off reckoned that he'd read suggestions that Haswell-E generation chips possibly didn't have as ...
