Re: Laptop screen problem... LCD or chip problem?

Sounds to me like a GPU problem. The display simply draws whatever is coming from the GPU. If the LCD was defective it would most likely affect the entire display area in some way or another, meaning random corruption across the screen rather than just a certain portion of it. An LCD has "dumb ...

Re: Looking for a CPU architecture case study book

I got that book when i was doing my BEng and it is fantastic. Really thorough on the subject of CPU architecture. I recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.

Re: Possible failing video card?

If i had this problem i would personally try to connect up the card to a normal sized monitor using something other than HDMI just to see if that is a possible problem. You say it happens when you turn on your PC and when you launch a game which suggests to me that it might be during monitor resolut...

Re: Power problem with PC

Also, I'm not sure you need such an enormous PSU if that's the spec of your PC - I've got a Corsair 450W, the overall power usage when idle is about 80W, and on load about 140 - 150W. I know that it isn't as easy a comparison as that, but the highest PSU I've used was for a customer's Core i7-920 b...

Re: Possible failing video card?

First of all get the proper drivers from AMD. Don't bother with custom drivers from the video card manufacturer, usually they are either outdated or have that extra bit of crappyne ... uh i meant added value and optimisation. :) Secondly, can you go into a bit more detail on this problem. When did i...

Re: Motherboard voltage is way off.

The -60 sounds like a bogus reading. However... Is the power supply one that used to work with this mobo, or a newer one? Most ATX PSUs made since ~2005 don't even have a -5V rail (and modern motherboards don't use it). If the NF7-S actually needs -5V for something, and you're trying to use it with...

Re: Laptop Battery, why 80%?

I believe the reason is that the charging process is logarithmic. So when a battery is fully discharged it only takes a bit of time and energy to charge it to, say, 20%. Going from 20-40% takes substantially more than it did for 0-20%. Likewise, substantially even more for 40-80% than it did for 0-4...

Re: Motherboard voltage is way off.

That's pretty weird. However, i doubt that the reading is correct in the first place. If your mobo boots up into the BIOS it probably is not -60V regardless of what it claims. I'd be looking to something else being the cause.

Re: Flash clips not running as smooth as expected

I'm still running XP, so i can't help you there. But i doubt that your PC build is somehow not performing up to scratch. Most likely a software issue, maybe drivers, maybe flash (!) and the fact that Win7 is a relatively new platform. But you know that HTML5 is the new hotness on the block trying to...

As with anything that is new, you have to give it time to mature.

Btw that's a nice system you made there. :)

Re: New Computer and Random Crashes

These kinds of system crashes are more than likely caused by the RAM, especially performance junk that is supposedly faster performing and is a "better brand". I've never liked any of the performance RAM brands as they are always problematic. The best brand that i found works is Kingston. ...

Re: pretty sure my power supply died

I had a feeling it could be the PSU or the mobo like i said above.

For the mobo, try resetting the BIOS to see if that brings it back to life. Good luck!

Re: pretty sure my power supply died

You say that when you plugged it all back lights came on but when hitting the power button nothing happened. Did the case fans spin up, myabe CPU fan, HDD, or anything like that? Maybe the mobo failed? When your computer turned itself off abruptly did you hear any pops or the like or smell any burni...

Re: Best Practices for removing Viruses and other Infections?

I tend to be of the opinion that once a machine is compromised, it can't be trusted again. -SF That's pretty much my moto. Although what i like to do is to first install some AV (i like Avira, Kaspersky, MSE) and run it so i can just check what's on the system just to see if i managed to evade the ...

Re: Is My Hard Drive Going to Die?

Just had a thought - could it be some sort of power saving mechanism? My external WD 1TB does the same kind of thing when i don't access it for a few minutes and it soft shuts down until i want to access it again. When i do it takes a few seconds for the drive to spin up and start fetching data at w...
