Re: Car recommendations

Subarus in the 2011-2013 era seem to have issues with oil burning if you are thinking of buying one. After that (and probably before) they're fine if well maintained. I'm biased to Hondas (great engines) but people are right that Subaru's got a definite edge on AWD. They (Subaru) also are impressive...

Re: SimCity (2013)

I guess I'm dating myself by noting I was a pretty serious fan of SimCity -- the original from the late 80's. I played the Closed (Weekend) Beta last night. It was very pretty -- quite reminiscent of The Sims 3 in many respects. The ability to drill down and look at individuals walking around (and w...

Re: Canadian Gaming PC Boutique

I purchase components from them (memoryexpress.com) online; and I've since advised two friends (both of whom have had PC's built by them) in Calgary to use them. So far no problems. One took a defective video card back to them and exchanged it without difficulty; I haven't had any personal experienc...

Re: World of Warcraft

"fully understand how to play it?" Not... readily. MMO's tend to be pretty easy to get into, but get complex awfully fast. There are a lot of terms that are cryptic and confusing to a newbie; perhaps this is making it harder for your friend to communicate ideas to you. Perhaps he's adoptin...

Re: The smallest HTPC possible.

Since you say you're thinking of foregoing gaming... I like the ION/Atom SFF machines like the Acer Aspire Revo 36xx. (Asus has one as well; I'm sure others do). I picked up one recently on sale for C$365: Win 7 Home Premium, 4GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, Atom 330 and ION chipset (very roughly a 9400M). I've...

Re: Just why? Core2Quad Q9500 & Q9505

All Q9x00 models support: Intel VT, TXT As Game_boy notes, wikipedia's wrong on that one. Intel VT is a general umbrella term for a series of virtualization technologies, not all of which currently even apply to x86 cpus. (VT-x, VT-i, VT-d, VT-c ATM IIRC). Saying a product line supports VT is somew...

Re: Just why? Core2Quad Q9500 & Q9505

There's no mystery here; the 9500 is a (slightly) feature-stripped 9505, lacking Intel's VT-d and TXT technologies. (VT-d virtualizes I/O; TXT stands for Trusted Execution Technologies). If you're an enthusiast, you'll probably want VT-d. If you're a big corporation you might want TXT. If you're bui...
