Re: Is 1TB = 1TB? Need drive EXACTLY the same size.

Like I said, I decided against getting another drive since they cost twice as much as when I bought them 2 years ago. I did image the drive on a 3TB, but didn't clone it or copy the image to another 1TB. I was able to restore the key from the embedded backup but so far I have been unable to make the...

Re: Is 1TB = 1TB? Need drive EXACTLY the same size.

Thanks for the input! I don't think it'd be possible to use a different size drive for my needs, as it was a truecrypt encrypted drive, and the only way truecrypt knows where the backup header is located is by counting the byte offset (it appears as random data until it inputs the password you enter...

Is 1TB = 1TB? Need drive EXACTLY the same size.

Does anyone know if all, or even most, 1TB hard drives are the same size? I need to clone an old (first version) 1TB Caviar Black drive so I can try to recover an overwritten header. I don't want to write anything to the drive I have, so I will clone it and attempt to restore the header on the clone...

Re: DSLR & Lenses?

Take the deal on the EOS Rebel T1i + 18-55 IS + 55-250 IS + 75-300 that I posted earlier and sell the 75-300. Add the Sigma 150-500 OS that mattsteg recommended, a tripod, a Speedlite 430EX II or 580EX II flash, a camera bag, memory cards and the EF 50mm f/1.8 , and you've got a nice kit for your $...

Re: Motherboard, etc., for i7 875k build

Thanks a bunch man. I didn't know that about the SATA6/USB3 implementation on 1156, as I had been planning on 1366 or AM3. Because of the immature controllers and their implementation, I decided to just go with a EVGA P55 SLI, as it came out to $100 after rebates and has 2 x16 and an x4 slot, so I h...

Re: Motherboard, etc., for i7 875k build

I finally made the jump and got my processor (i7 875k for $200) :o Where do you get an i7 875K for only $200? The best I've seen is $299 after rebate. MicroCenter. They're not advertising it much, but I think it's good at least through Sunday. Make sure you call your closest store to make sure they...

Motherboard, etc., for i7 875k build

Hey guys. I finally made the jump and got my processor (i7 875k for $200), so now I have 29 days to complete my build. My computer will be used mostly for photo editing, encryption, everyday use, and Starcraft II. So far I have: CPU: Intel Core i7 875k RAM: 4GB Corsair XMS3 1333 9-9-9-24 PSU: Corsai...

Re: "Sound System"

With a high end sound card you want to make SURE it has drivers for your OS, as it's not going to be as big a seller as the average card, and may not have 64x support, vista support, or whatever. I'd email or call the company if it doesn't explicitly list the OS he'll use as compatible (e.g. 64-bit ...

Re: "Sound System"

I still don't understand what the computer is for. Is he using it for encoding raw digital rips from the analog sources, is he using it to do the actual ripping, or both? If he's just encoding digital files, he technically doesn't even need a sound card, and processor is basically all that matters. ...

Re: My enterance into the i7 world

Aren't you supposed to have them in 3 channel pairs (or 3 channel singles)? http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/16558/3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128375 Why does that mobo have 4 dimm slots? For running the weird 4-slot tri-channel mode? It seems to me it'd be worth ...

New TR System Guide ETA?

Hey, Looking at the dates of the system guides for the past 2 years, it looks like there's usually a new system guide released about every 2 to 2.5 months. Since I was planning on ordering my first build this week but am trying to see if I can't stall a couple weeks, I was wondering when to expect a...

Re: i7 920 Build (~$2000-$2500)

So I found this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254026 It's a pretty huge monitor for the price (27.5), and it offers 1920 x 1200 resolution. I looked it up, and reviewers seem to be pretty happy with it. Does anyone on here have one they can comment on? That's a TN panel,...

Re: First Build - Quiet, mixed use, mid-priced

Thanks for the quick replies! Messing around with your suggestions, it seems it'd only be about 210 more for an i7 build with 6gigs or DDR3 than a Phenom II 720 with 4 gigs of DDR3. I'm planning on waiting at least until Friday to order anyway, but I'm leaning towards the i7 build. A couple quick qu...

First Build - Quiet, mixed use, mid-priced

Hi everyone! I've been lurking your forums for a couple of years reading up on advice, and it's finally time to replace my 6 year old Dell, so I finally registered. My build is a mixed-use one: I don't do anything daily that requires top-of-the-line components, but I do venture into things and I'd l...
