Re: Active Safety in Cars: What's good?

Ought to raise the driving age to 50 anyway - there would be less traffic. :D With a max old driver age, and mandatory retirement of the driver's license, at 60! Here in Idaho, license renewals are shorter after 62. But I agree with the idea of replacing my drivers license with a fully autonomous v...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

I didn't like anything my parents listened to growing up. Obviously as you get older tastes change, but I wouldn't say at my age (early 30's) that my parents' and my tastes in music line up that well still. FWIW, I like Rush, but not enough to perform 2112 at a high school talent show. My parents d...

Oculus bricks all Rifts connected to PC's!!

It seems there is a "small" bug in Oculus' systems that just broke any Rift connected to a PC: https://twitter.com/natemitchell/status/971428374982705152. They all call home, and the certificate that it's a valid Rift contained a hard-coded date that just passed. Oculus says they are worki...

Re: Video card prices

I don't think the market can be ignored.

I do believe that the companies can serve both the gaming and the mining markets by offering a differentiated product.

As to laughing at others' pain....

Re: Video card prices

The fact that companies seek to maximize shareholder value does not mean that they cannot do so more intelligently by differentiating markets. Right now, they can sell to miners but not to gamers, due to price. That also has used up their production capacity in the recent mining increases, but that ...

Alright, here come some potential dates, please respond as quickly and decisively as possible. :o June 16 Maybe June 23 August 18 Thoughts??? Prefer either June date. Would like to attend one of these before it doesn't happen again, and not available in late August - but then I'm just one gerbil.

I just visited the local Altex shop. Sales rep told me they received a big GPU shipment Thursday to fix the hole in their shelves. Part of it included 50 1070/1080 class cards, which they sold all of by the next day. :P Most powerful GPUs left on the shelves were some $280 1060 3GB cards. Edit: Loo...

Re: Active Safety in Cars: What's good?

Say for example some crazy person is passing in the right lane and driving like it's another Fast & Furious movie, which if any of these safety options would detect that? From what I know most blind spot monitoring only handles objects already there and just outside of the box. This is my large...

I can't help but feel like ousting a country from something like the olympics, which i consider to be a sort of multi national peace meeting, is a major insult. Maybe i have too high of an opinion of it as a world event. I think you're right about the insult, but the evidence that has been played o...

Help me understand, why do you start useless threads like this? Not all people who are into tech as a hobby or day job hate sports. You're projecting your own beliefs and preferences onto others again. Just because you're into computers and hate sports doesn't mean everyone else here feels the same...

On my principal system, audio is HDMI to a Samsung 4k monitor that serves as my main monitor, and optical out to a Sonos Playbar, with a pair of Gen 2 play 5's that I use for music, a pair of play 1's for surround use and a Sonos sub. Along with a gaming console that plays UHD movies, it gives a wid...

Forth? Now there's a name I haven't heard in a long time. I did some forth programming roughly 40 years ago and I hated it. The other comments are right in saying it was a lot like programming HP calculators, but one tended to do smaller projects on a calculator. Using RPN on larger projects just ga...

Does my head go on a stake just for asking such a sacrilegious question? Yes. You might as well admit that you drive a car equipped with an automatic transmission. That's a great analogy! Ahh, Quarterdeck!

One of the best tech companies to appear and disappear - extended memory management when Intel processors only allowed 640K to be addressed; windowed multi-tasking when even Microsoft Windows could not do that - a real pioneer!

I have a motorized standing desk from Nextdesks. I use it frequently, and I generally feel better when I do.
