CDex is my weapon of choice for CD rips. http://www.cdex.n3.net It's free. It can rip directly to MP3 using Lame. It can also rip to wav, VQF, OggVorbis, or anything else you want. It can do all the id3 and CDDB stuff you requested. The only con is that it doesn't have the error correction of EAC or...

I've got the MSI 4400, which I picked up about 3 weeks ago. Its great so far. The software bundle is about the best that I've seen - NOLF is a great game if you don't have it already. Also has VIVO, which many other 4400s don't have. The one possible bad point for this card is that the fan on the he...

Hmm, it appears that we're both right. http://www.tech-report.com/reviews/2002q2/geforce4-ti4200/index.x?pg=8 In low and medium resolutions, the 64 meg version slightly edges out the 128. But at high resolution, 1280x1024, the 128 has the upper hand. The 64 can't even complete 4x at that rez. I'd im...

Another reason is that AA and newer games over the next 12 months will like 128MB a lot more... Actually, AA is highly bandwidth dependent. Higher clocked memory will do better. the 128MB version should o/c to 4400 I think that a 64 meg could probably overclock to about 4400 speed, which the 128 wi...

I don't know about the desktop samsung drives, but the laptop drives made by Samsung are pure garbage. I think they make their platters out of recycled paper plates or something.

I'd think that it would be worth the extra $10 for a more reliable name.

For a Gf4 ti4200, you want to buy the version with 64mb of memory. The way that the two 4200 versions work is that the 128 mb type has much slower clocked ram, while the 64 mb one is clocked about the same as a 4400. The performance advantage from higher clock memory far outweighs the fact that ther...

For a 2D animation program, the Gf4 MX will be fine. When you want to bust out the games, the Gf3 Ti200 will be somewhat faster, and the Gf4 4200 even faster than that (get the 64mb version, not the 128).

But if this for doing work, you might just want to save the money.

Also, the mounting standoffs may be wrong. Most OEM cases only have the four to six mounts that their mobos actually use, not the wide variety of locations offered by a retail case. Well, you're probably pretty much screwed. It sounds as if the sector divisions on the drive itself have been erased. The hard drive heads can't track if those are gone. I hope that the recovery software will do some magic for you, but I wouldn't count on it. After that, DFT might make the drive use...

I'll second the idea of trying to boot the bare board. Mobos do arrive DOA from time to time. Also, the power supply may not be standard. It may not be supplying the correct power to the mobo.

Was the Rage video integrated into the motherboard? You should disable it in the Bios if so. If there is an uninstall for the Rage drivers in the add/remove box, that is also a good plan.

Steps to take: 1. Back up your data. If you're running Win9x or have the drive formatted in FAT32, it shouldn't be too hard. Use a DOS boot disk to boot the computer, and you can get into the HD. If you can get access to a spare HD, you could transfer files that way quickly, and not need to worry ab...
