Re: 7700k, wow!

This is OP. Really glad to hear that I'm not the only gerbil out there with a success story upgrading CPU from Sandy Bridge to current gen. I wonder why the perception across the internet doesn't match the reality here. Does it have to do with the fact that these are multiplayer results, with no gre...

Re: Improving wifi coverage in my new home

I would suggest doing the single, massive router, assuming coverage is good. If not, I would actually suggest mesh. My new house is also wired with ethernet, and I set up 2 APs (one upstairs, one downstairs). Same SSID's, same passwords, encryption, etc. I've now back-pedaled slightly and set up 2 S...

Re: 7700k, wow!

I went from DDR3-1333Mhz memory (checked my current CPU-z signature to confirm), to DDR4-3200Mhz memory (partially on some of the memory related gaming results from TR). I am also running a 144hz G-sync monitor. I was able to push up my video quality settings on BF1 and Titanfall 2, and still had a ...

7700k, wow!

I upgraded from my 2500K @ 4.5Ghz to the 7700K, and you can color me impressed! I was running a 970 with my 2500k, and I was noticing some jittering in the newer games. I am now pretty confident in suggesting that a 2500k bottlenecks a 970, at least at 1440p. I was seeing benchmarks with up to 30% m...

Looks like my memory wasn't fully seated in the dram slots. Gave it a reseat and a CMOS reset, and we have Post!

Thx all for your help. I'm extremely excited to see how my new i7 goes in my games. I'm upgrading from a 2500k

New board won't post, Amber dram led lit

Hi all, I just got my new build Asus z-270a prime Mobo G skill ddr4 3200 ram -16gb I7-7700k I hooked everything up and pressed the power button, and my system won't post, and the Amber dram led is continuously lit. I have tried the mem ok button, and also tried changing dram slots a2/b2 to a1/b1. No...

Re: Bottle-necking my aging beast

I'm in a similar scenario

970, g-sync monitor, 2500k OC

I think I will finally look at a new cpu/mobo/ram combo when kaby lake comes out. There are a number of good tests that show the architectural improvements of the newest cpu compared to sandy.

Re: Can someone give me a tip on how to set up my new network?

So I ended up doing this: coax in (closet) -> Modem (Closet) -> router #1 (set in gateway mode, in closet) -> ethernet through walls to routers #2 and #3 (set in AP mode, not in closet) -> clients For now, I completely bypassed the switch until such time that i need more than 4 ethernet connections ...

Re: Can someone give me a tip on how to set up my new network?

Thanks all for the suggestions. I am also leaning towards the AP setup. There's one thing i'll need to track down, there's an Ethernet cable that bypasses the switch, and was connected into the old modem/router combo. Perhaps he used that for an AP. I'll have to go unscrew all my wall plates to chec...

So, took a look at my switch this morning. It's one of these http://www.legrand.us/onq/networking/wired-networks/routers-switches/da1008.aspx So, right now, my set up is coax in (closet)-> surfboard modem (closet)-> switch (closet)-> asus router connected to switch via in-wall Ethernet in another ro...

Can someone give me a tip on how to set up my new network?

All,     I just moved into my first single family home! I was pleased to discover its fully wired for Ethernet throughout the house, with an Ethernet junction box and everything. Now, I want to wire up my desktop to the Ethernet, however, i'm having a hell of a time trying to get it to recognize som...

Re: Wait for Coffee?

I too own a Sandy Bridge, and I was reading this  link  to Eurogamer that did testing of OC SB vs. OC IB vs. Skylake on both TitanX and 970. To me, this seems pretty compelling that I should be paying attention to prices for new Kaby Lake (especially if the performace bump is double digit % over Sky...

Re: Is Sandy Bridge worth upgrading from yet?

I've been playing the BF1 beta, Company of Heroes 2, 2016 DOOM, Civ 5, JC3, Tomb raider I know some of it is not under my control (poorly optimized game engines and such). I've read a number of articles that say a PCIe 2.0 @16x is 99% of a PCIe 3.0 @16x for GPU, so that's not a huge pull for me to u...

Re: Is Sandy Bridge worth upgrading from yet?

Yeah that's a good point Plazmodeus. I am limited to that older technology on my P67 chipset.

I already have SSDs on my system, but i'll have to find some benchmarks that show improvements from more PCIe lanes and USB 3.1.

Re: Is Sandy Bridge worth upgrading from yet?

I did spring for a 1440p 144hz (good) TN g-sync, and boy is it purdy. I got the Dell S2716DG. I'll have to keep that monitor in mind.  Before I bought the GTX1070, I was looking at the BenQ XL2730Z.  But since I went over to Nvidia, I have looking for an alternative that ideally supported GSync.  T...

Re: Is Sandy Bridge worth upgrading from yet?

I think that 5775C gets away with it due to the very large L4 cache. Unless Intel starts doing that with all of their other CPUs, I doubt we'll see gaming performance close to that level with their mainstream desktop parts.

I almost exclusively game on my desktop at home, and it's got the 2500k @ 4.5Ghz. With the new Intel chips out, have we finally had enough incremental improvements to make Kaby Lake worth replacing SB?

Re: Nuclear, Solar, & Wind Farms, Oh My!

Personally, I hope nuclear fusion doesn't become possible, simply because it will immediately trend itself towards a fusion/neutron bomb.

If that happens, goodbye humans. I'm convinced that the only reason nuclear weapons aren't being used against nations post-WW2 is due to their radioactive fallout.

I just got a dell S2716DG (144hz, G-sync, 1440p, 27", "good" TN). I love it. I have it tied to a 970 right now, so G-sync for games that struggle at high detail levels, and ULMB for games that I can run with no problem. I don't have many scenarios where i'd be looking at it off angle...

Yeah I'm thinking about replacing my PSU and getting a VRR monitor. I agree that my 2500K was one of the wisest PC component purchases I've made since starting to build PCs. Perhaps Kaby Lake will have enough cumulative 5% improvements over Sandy Bridge that I'll finally be tempted for a new CPU + m...

You make a very good point K-L-Waster. It's not like things are unplayable with my 970. Splitting it up would also help with the high cost that DancinJack brought up. A high end GPU + VRR monitor is essentially a brand new computer tower at this point. Currently having an IPS panel, am I giving up a...

RTS like Company of Heroes 2, Civ5, Total War series. FPS like R6 Siege, BF1 (maybe), BF4 It's true that VRR shines when framerates are changing. This is why i was considering 1080 for 1440p, just to make sure I've got the graphical horsepower. Of course, I could turn down the eye candy, but where's...
