Re: LSI SAS9211-8

Just did the same on FreeNAS 11.

Jumped on TR's finding of 4x4TB HGST for $400 a couple weeks ago. Now running a 6x4TB RAIDZ2 for ~15TB usable. R/W exceeds 1GbE links.

Install was stupid simple, as I bought a pre-flashed IT mode card. FreeNAS saw it immediately.

All in all, happy with the results.

Re: Ageing drives, NAS, and Backup Strategy Rethink

Personally, I enjoy the flexibility that a roll-your-own NAS provides (eg. FreeNAS, or the like), because it offers much more expandability options, performs media scrubs, takes snapshots, allows for installation of plugins (Plex, CouchPotato, etc.), and utilizes the ZFS file system (for FreeNAS, at...

Re: Drove a sports car for the first time! Amazing!

Every now and again, seemingly at just the right time, I read/see/hear things like this that make me realize that I need to re-evaluate the things I take for granted. I'm not wealthy, and work/have worked for everything I have - yet I do still recognize that I don't "want" for much, theref...

Re: Please advise me the best file copying free software

Robocopy will work in this case. Plus, to use it, you don't need to install it as its already bundled with Windows. It is a command line tool only. However, I find it useful when copying large amounts of data, where any interruption could cause the copy to stop permanently until the user intervenes....

Its been awhile since I've dabbled with Hiren's (to crack local user accounts), but would that not be an option on Win8?

Re: What are you guys folding with?

Small update: Ended up getting rid of the two GTX 680's, in favor of two GTX 970's. Between the two 970's and the 3930k (@ 4.4Ghz), the system tends to return anywhere from 500 - 675k / day. The higher end of that spectrum is on Core 18 and Core A4 projects. Wattage draw from the wall is typically a...

Really? Surely most people can't consider that too much of a hindrance to deal with for a few days/behind a closed door/vacuum afterwards to turn up their nose at it?

I guess I just don't understand TR readers sometimes.

IMHO, Creating AD on a Domain Controller is very easy. Edited for clarity: DCPROMO (if Win2008) / ("Add Role" if Win2012), create users, create security groups, assign users to security groups. Done (for the most part.) Where the complexity starts to come into play is with security group m...

I agree with most others here (@ improving cooling). For reference: Under a Corsair H100i, my slightly over-volted, and 4.4Ghz OC'd 3930k usually stays within 65-70C (and occasionally into the low 70's) under F@H on Core A4 work units. IMHO, unless you're folding 24/7, removing the case's side panel...

Tsk, tsk. *Shakes head* I would've thought the large majority of you guys would have known that non-reg. ECC memory can be used with the current i3's. Shame. (Only kidding.) But absolutely, for around ~$375, you can find a C22x series chipset board, an i3, and 8gb of ECC DDR3. Exactly what I did for...

For maximum performance for reads + writes along with *good* resiliency: Six 2-way mirrors + 2 hot spares (24 TB usable, strategic failures of 8 drives possible). This is a step down in redundancy from option #1 but will be faster every time. I don't mean to sound like I'm nit-picking, but I'm stil...

I like this idea. Very much so. However, and unfortunately, I do not have very much available storage capacity in my current, quite puny, 2.? TB RAID 5 array. The task of building something new, more suitable/reliable/redundant, has been on my "to-do" list for quite some time now. (That's ...

Re: Car question (lock cylinders/keys)

To me, this doesn't sound like simply an issue of a worn key. I suspect, being as old as the vehicle is, the cylinder's tumblers are likely worn as well. Wasn't sure if the ignition/door key cylinder tumblers were replaceable on those models (or Toyotas at all, for that matter.) I knew that Honda cy...

JBI and Chrispy already implied this, but to elaborate in explicit terms: CHA/CHB refers to two DIMM channels (likely DIMM slots 1 & 2 for CHA, and slots 3 & 4 for CHB) CHC/CHD refers to the next two DIMM channels (likely DIMM slots 5 & 6 for CHA, and slots 7 & 8 for CHD) ^ Don't quo...

After looking at it, I like the idea of the G502. The base of it (the mating surface of the bottom of the mouse), is pretty large. So it should give a stable experience. (eg. No mouse "rolling" - which would lift the mouse sensor off the tracking surface.) In fact, its much larger at the b...

I've noticed in the past that "Auto" settings still may not "auto"matically configure the BIOS to utilize a voltage, speed, and/or timing value that is compatible with a given stick(s) of memory. Resulting in a no-boot case. I'd recommend what was already recommended above. Expli...

Re: Dual Purpose Folder + Media Device?

BIF, I wouldn't be doing any CPU folding on this machine. For two reasons, PPD returns on CPUs for the F@H project are anemic to say the least (I *MAY* see a 40k PPD return from a 3930k @ 4.44GHz on 10 cores - just not worth it to me), and so I can keep CPU cycles free for file server / media server...

Thanks Pete.

Currently, the storage requirements necessitate four 3.5" drives, and will likely expand to six soon. I've seen Silverstone's recent DS380, and am partial to it - not that I need to go that small (obviously its a mITX chassis and wouldn't work with your suggestions.)

Gents (and Ladies), I know this is an odd combination (and may very well be the wrong idea all together), from my POV and understanding, a dual purpose folder/media server may suit my needs. The reason for even thinking of this idea, is that I've recently upgraded my 3930k/X79 machine with 2x GTX970...
