Re: Linux opening cans of worms questions...

It depends on what you know, and what you're trying to do. We use Red Hat, so it's Fedora for me even though it's probably not the best for most people. I use vi, because it is on every Unix and Linux variant...

Plus 100 on the recommended contractor recommendation. The best unit won't last or work well if it is not sized, installed and serviced correctly. If you are looking at ductless split units, Mitsubishi is worth considering. I am retired from an A/C manufacturer, not Mitsubishi.

A Compaq Alphaserver 4100 running TRU64 4.0 Unix - I believe it's 17 years old and finally on the way out... You did specify "work."

Re: Would this laptop be enough for my need?

I'd ask myself how much portable gaming was worth if I already had a good desktop machine. You have to settle for less performance and portability as you move up the performance curve in any laptop. It's your money and your choice, and the experts here will weigh in if you tell them what games, you ...

That bit about R and L is true for Japanese, and it drove my wife nuts. To her, Shelly and Sherry are pronounced the same, because they would be written the same in katakana. There literally is no difference, even though we spell them differently. After much confusion on the intercom, Shelly became ...

Fedora, only because I use Red Hat at work so I get to see what's coming. If I were in it for stability, Centos. They give you the stability of Red Hat, while keeping you off the update express that is Fedora, for free. Of course, you still get to deal with the "open" zealotry, but that's ...

My first one died a premature death from a stone that the builder left in the pit after ten years or so (plastic impeller.) My next one (Home Depot) is still going strong after 15. Pedestal type, if that matters. I ran some plastic pipe to divert the water far from the foundation Our drainage was ex...

Ugly design, just took off on me and installed over the top of Fedora 16 without giving me a chance to repartition or even tell me what it was going to do. At least I'm not stuck with Gnome 3. I did have a backup of my data. I make mistakes, but I don't make them twice.

I have the i3-3225 with a stock cooler and don't see why you'd need anything else. It is quiet and the processor doesn't put out much heat in HTPC use. I way overspent on the MB - Asus P8Z77-I because I wanted the wireless and USB3, and it has a Samsung 830 128G SSD and a 2GB Samsung HDD. The case i...

Actually, I have the opposite view. I leave my keys, cell phone, walllet, etc in the same place so I know where to find them. Why does Microsoft insist on changing the location of, well, everything with each new version of their software? I understand, working with various flavors of UNIX and Linux,...

Re: All Certs and No experience - Questions on Tech Jobs

As a team lead/hiring manager for an outsourcing company, my advice would be: finish the degree, and get some experience via the internship route. Not having a degree will keep you out of some places entirely, or keep you from getting promoted in some others. It proves you can complete something. In...

Fugu is actually a delicacy. It's very mild flavored, and totally unobjectionable in taste to anyone who likes sushi. I've had it once, and would gladly eat it again if someone were buying. The fatalities, in Japan anyway, are always from unlicensed preparation. I like asparagus, but the comment abo...

The second worst sounding that I can name is balut. I've been to the PI long ago, but balut was a step too far for me. Not even on a bet. My impression, as a new owner of an Intel X25M-G2 (80 GB) is that some things are somewhat faster, but overall, I could have better spent the money elsewhere. This is on a machine with an Intel Quad Core 9550, 4 GB of RAM, W7 Professional, and a WD 1TB Caviar Black. I use it mainly for web browsing,...

Western Digital and Seagate have free software on their websites that will clone your existing drive. I had good luck with the Seagate (Acronis True Image) and not so good luck with the Western Digital software. For what it's worth, my advice is to do the copy from cdrom or diskette, not from the Wi...

I've been thinking about adding 4GB to use as a RAMdisk. It might help performance a bit by letting me stash cookies and other temporary internet files where they'd get written and read fast and wiped on reboot. However, the GSkill DDR2 800 is now up to 90 bucks which is a fair amount of money to sq...

I live this every day I go to work and fire up the old Dell laptop. As an old IBM engineer once told me, laptops are last year's technology, at twice the price. Among patches being pushed, antivirus, corporate spyware, and other overhead, it's a wonder any useful work is possible.

Fedora could be a bad choice. New versions come out every six months, and support stops after the "n+2" version comes out. If you don't mind the upgrade/reinstall every six months or year, and the open source absolutism, as well as the bleeding edge issues, Fedora is a good choice. I use i...

Toohey's New. My daughter brought a bottle back with her from Australia, and it was wonderful. I never saw it again, until I visited Jungle Jim's in Cincinatti. I bought two six packs, but it's not the same. My favorite beer, the original Kirin, tastes much different in Japan. This "brewed for ...

One hour and five minutes for DVD Flick to encode and burn four 45 minute episodes makes the new system over 5 times as fast with this workload. The comparison isn't exact, but on the old P4 under XP, I was getting around 22-24 frames per second, and the Q9550 was doing well over 75 while encoding t...
