Looking for help/advice on choosing a monitor

I recently upgraded to a decently powerful desktop rig (9700k, 2080 Ti). Right now I'm using a run of the mill 1440p 60hz display, but I'm planning on upgrading that in the near future as well. My original plan was to go for a really nice 4K 120hz display, but it turns out that's not gonna be in my ...

Re: Resetting a laptop in preparation to sell

I would just prepare a Win10 install USB drive, completely zap the storage device(s) using something bootable like DBAN (also available as part of UBCD ), then reinstall Windows. I just tried booting from my W10 install USB, the same one I used to install windows on my new desktop, and it didn't wo...

Re: Resetting a laptop in preparation to sell

At this point I honestly just wanna know if Windows' "remove files and clean all the drives" option is secure enough on an SSD that whoever I sell it to won't be able to access any old data off of it. If the SSD's have a slightly shorter lifespan/performance then I guess that's just how it...

Re: Resetting a laptop in preparation to sell

Sounds like you need to adjust the boot priority so that you can tell it to look at the USB drive first. Usually there's some keystroke for that like escape, F2, F8, and so on. If it's not displayed on screen during POST, then you can probably find the right keystroke with a little googling for you...

Resetting a laptop in preparation to sell

Prefacing this, I'm running Windows 10 on this laptop (Alienware 15 r3), and I have two drives, the 256gb boot drive it came with, and a Samsung 500 gig EVO, both SSD's I know about all the steps in regards to resetting a PC using the Windows recovery partition, and how you can select "remove f...

Using dedicated GPU in laptop over Thunderbolt 3

I recently purchased a Caldigit TB3 Plus, to expand my Alienware 15 R3, and I've hooked up an external display via Displayport, but the display is reporting as being connected to the integrated Intel GPU rather than my dedicated GTX 1060. I can't find a setting to change this, and the Nvidia control...

Re: Need a PCIe/USB sound card for A-D conversion

Another thing to check is the driver control panel, there's always one. There may be non-obvious options about how you want the input channels to be treated by the host OS. As an example, IIRC, in MOTU gear, you can actually get surround sound by checking a box. In my specific case with my Audient,...

Re: Need a PCIe/USB sound card for A-D conversion

So I took a look at the manual, but it's inconclusive. The quick way to check is to make sure you have the latest firmware and drivers, then see if in Windows, in the sound settings, under Input devices, you have a list that reads something like "Input 1/2", "Input 3/4", and so ...

Re: Need a PCIe/USB sound card for A-D conversion

My idea was just getting the Focusrite (actually the 2i2, not the Solo) to hook up to your laptop. Pull master outs from Zoom into it at the front, then bring up the Scarlett's 1/2 stereo pair as your OBS input. The only thing I'm assuming here, which I think the Scarlett drivers do, is pulling bot...

Re: Need a PCIe/USB sound card for A-D conversion

I'm not strictly following here, as I don't see why there's a need for an interface with many inputs :). You already have your Zoom mixer, so you already have your mix done, and all you require is to get it into OBS via a quality line-level input, right? Or did I misunderstand the issue? That's pre...

Re: Need a PCIe/USB sound card for A-D conversion

There's an ASIO plugin for OBS: https://github.com/pkviet/obs-asio (maybe you already tried it?) There are binaries in the releases section. If you want hardware, then the Focusrite Scarlett Solo is right up there in affordable/good. I've already tried that, on two different occasions. I got it wor...

Need a PCIe/USB sound card for A-D conversion

I have a mixing board (Zoom L-12) I use for live streaming on Twitch that suits almost every need I have, except it uses ASIO which isn't compatible with OBS, and all the workarounds I've looked at and tried to get the digital audio from my mixer into OBS via ASIO have been clunky and not entirely f...

Applying sound enhancements/equalizer to a specific app

I recently purchased some high end headphones and a nice USB DAC/amp combo to complement them, and my music and anything else on my computer that produces audio sound amazing, except for one game (Diablo 3). I noticed when I applied a bass boost enhancement to my USB audio device that it improved th...

I've found two potential problems In the bootlog, a consistent anomaly seems to be "BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys", occuring about four or five times, and then the final error is "BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\WdFilter.sys" I also s...

Not as far as I'm aware. I went to run a game stream on friday, everything seemed fine except for random wifi disconnects, that was all I really did on friday and then today this started.

Windows Explorer taking a long time to launch

I recieved a new Alienware 15 R4 laptop on Thursday, went through all my setup and system migration, and everything seemed fine by Thursday night. Re: Looking for thunderbolt 3 PCIe chassis

The Sonnet Echo Express III looks to be using the effective link speed converted to bytes with overhead removed. It is a very odd way of doing this as that figure is far from guaranteed due to other devices on the chain and if DP is encapsulated alongside PCIe. Assuming that it's the only device in...

Re: nope

That's still less than the bandwidth of a native PCIe 2.0 x8 slot. Hopefully that doesn't cause issues. Doesn't a native PCIe 2.0 8x slot have ~40gbps bandwidth? The same as the 3.0 4x lanes afforded by Thunderbolt 3? From my limited knowledge, as long as I can access all 8 PCIe 2.0 lanes, I should...

Re: Looking for thunderbolt 3 PCIe chassis

The page you linked says it has 2750 MB/s of bandwidth, so for some reason it is not utilizing the full 40 Gbps. I suppose it is possible that it is a typo. I emailed Sonnet Support, they told me it wasn't a typo and that TB3 reserves some bandwidth for video. This is the first I'm hearing about th...

Re: Looking for thunderbolt 3 PCIe chassis

I think I may have found my solution and it was sort of sitting under my nose the whole time I've been shopping around http://www.sonnettech.com/product/echoexpressse3.html They say this box has two 8x electrical and one 4x electrical slots, which (if everything works) would not only give me the ban...

Best way to seamlessly migrate to new Windows 10 Laptop

I'm going to be ordering a new W10 laptop tomorrow (Alienware 15 R4) and I want to know what the fastest, most painless method of transferring applications, data, and user settings (especially things like wifi settings and installed applications) from my current laptop (Asus G752), which is also run...

Re: Looking for thunderbolt 3 PCIe chassis

Does the card function with 4 lanes of throughput? Because that's all that's going to be available for a while yet. IIRC 8 lanes of 2.0 should effectively be the same thing as 4 lanes of 3.0 in any case. That's the thing, I don't know if the card will function properly. It's a Blackmagic Decklink Q...

Looking for thunderbolt 3 PCIe chassis

I'm trying to find an external PCIe card enclosure that connects to laptops via Thunderbolt 3, that will provide me with at least 8 PCIe lanes (2.0 or 3.0). I want to buy a video capture card that uses PCIe 8x 2.0, but none of the ones I've found so far offer more than 4 lanes of connectivity Thank ...

Re: Using multiple digital audio outputs simultaneously

My biggest concern with analog headsets is de-synchronization between the audio and video feeds, If anything, that's a bigger potential issue with digital due to the latency introduced by the USB interface. But either way, the skew will probably be small enough that it doesn't matter (unless the dr...

Re: Using multiple digital audio outputs simultaneously

Any objection to using analog headsets instead, with a splitter cable for the output side? I think your use of digital headsets is over-complicating this. When my next paycheque comes in I'm going to buy an analog headset to try out, OBS didn't seem to wanna work with an analog headset I had on han...

Re: Trying to format hard drive, format option unavailable?

If it is a brand new drive you will need to partition it first. I believe since Vista/7 when you plug in a truly blank drive it should ask if you want to partition with MBR or GPT schemes. Did any of that show up at all? It's not, it's a drive I've been using for some time as storage for all of my ...
