Re: Ryzen/Radeon 3000

RX 3080? Are you F-ing kidding me? First they ripped off Intel's numbering scheme, now they're doing it on the graphics side too. If this happens, I'll have lost some respect for AMD. Numbering schemes go back and fourth. NVidia did exactly the same thing when AMD's Radeon 9700 Pro was dominant, sw...

And here I was foolishly expecting them to start supporting mainstream GPUs from Intel now that they're pretty graphically capable. Instead they drop mainstream CPU support instead.

Why am I still being surprised by anything the gaming industry does?

Viruses, malware, adware etc oh and I still can't forget Windows ME ;-) Windows is one of the most secure systems these days, better than your average android device and far better than any smart gadget. There's certainly nothing to worry about there. Adware is still around of course, but there are...

Re: In search of a replacement for a specific type of card.

Unfortunately market segmentation has banned the lower end cards from featuring decent video outputs, so you have to shell out for the pro versions at triple the price. The nVidia range is particularly bad, the outputs on a GT1030 are terrible, despite the GPU being capable of handling four high res...

Re: What replacement Graphics Card?

With a 2011 monitor I'd lean towards the AMD cards, the lack of variable refresh rate support other than G-sync is a big argument against nVidia's mid-range cards if you're likely to buy a new screen within it's lifetime.

You're probably thinking of the platform update or maybe one of the service packs. Your memory is right that those updates made some graphics changes, but they did not fix the limits of heterogenous multi-adapter in the Vista kernel. I could have sworn I remembered a thread about someone trying thi...

Re: Is a bigger monitor with lower pixel density necessarily worse than a smaller one with higher pixel density?

I still personally don’t see the value in scaling. I’ll admit I haven’t seen one work. 27” at 1440p or 23” at 1080 seems to be about right for me. This is for work stuff. For gaming it is all about GPU resources. Turn off font smoothing and cleartype and you'll get some idea of how sharp text can b...

And bear in mind most peoples experience of native vs. dithering would have been done on ~96dpi monitors. If you're going for a HiDPI screen like 3840x2160@32" then the pixels are even tinier and dithering using them is even less noticeable. As others have said it's a non-issue unless you need ...

Windows and Mac OS also use different font smoothing algorithms which can affect smaller text, particularly fonts that rely on blurred edges to look correct.

Probably Windows 7 quirks. If you swap the 290 to the Windows 10 system does it work? EDIT: And yeah, using the scaling setting is a better choice than outputting a non-native resolution. Programs using standard GUI APIs will look the same, but those that are HiDPI aware will be able to take advanta...

Domes with mechanisms to actuate them when they collapse rather than at the bottom of their travel are still available. Often under the name semi-mechanical or similar these days. Topre's is widely considered the best (also used in Fujitsu's Happy Hacking Pro keyboards) but they're rather expensive.

Those sorts of apps tend to be misguided at best and scams at worst. There's very little in a modern OS that you can tune to any measurable benefit, unless you're doing something really unusual with it (which they don't cover anyway).

The HDMI 1.3 spec that brought HDMI up to Dual-link bandwidth was finalised in 2006 while the 4870 was released in 2008 so we're talking pretty cutting edge tech here. Dual link DVI to HDMI is not just a simple pin adapter* so it's possible the converter circuitry was unavailable or unduly expensive...

The RX 550 would be the equivalent AMD card (i.e. cheapest model that has the latest encode/decode hardware), although it is a little more powerful. I can't help with the Linux side of things though.

Mobile and mobile-like setups are hard to beat, the Switch uses 12W to run Skyrim on it's own display. Any sort of RX560-level computer or console setup is going to be a hefty 100W with screen. Consoles, Laptops, MiniPCs and Desktops are all pretty similar. The new single package Core i7 Radeons mig...

For video playback it's Intel GPUs all the way. They're just better supported.

But while it does have a decent amount of power, it's going to struggle to push even 2010 at 8 million pixels.

Don't buy anything. It's definitely not normal for the latest Intel graphics to use 8GB of RAM when running a 3840x2160 monitor. You need to track down and identify the problem or you risk spending money for no benefit. Do you still have the old screen? It's worth reconnecting it to make sure the ne...

I presume TechReport's power consumption figures are at the wall, so it'll be 230W being pulled from the power supply. That's a good 30% margin, and those figures are with a much more power hungry CPU. An 8700k pulls around 55-60W more at stock speeds than a 8350k. The adapter is much more dodgy tho...
