Re: Budget Graphics for Ryzen?

I'm just trying to figure out if building a Ryzen 4 core system can be done with basic graphics equivalent or better than buying an i7 with a 630 IGP for instance. Zen isn't Kaby Lake, the 1500X is comparable to a similarly priced i5 in most of the non-gaming benchmarks I've seen despite the SMT. T...

Re: Budget Graphics for Ryzen?

I thought only the R5 230 version was supported and the HD 5450 version wasn't (same chip I know). On second look, the $70 1030's are all REALLY crappy small single fans. Those are going to be prone to death by dust and loud noise. I think you're rather overestimating it's power consumption there, i...

Re: AMD Raven Ridge APU Size Estimate

To put that into perspective, a quad-core Kaby Lake is about 121 mm^2 Is that the Kaby Lake-S die size? That may not be a fair comparison. If this is AMD's largest Raven Ridge then it would be competing with Intel's GT4 dies. The standard Kaby Lake quad-core die size (e.g. any chip that you've seen...

Try it and see.

There's no point in speculating when you don't lose anything by simply trying it. Buy the monitor and if you're happy, great. If not, upgrading won't cost you any more buying them afterwards then it will buying them together.

Re: RX480 Remorse for not buying?

Even so, it's not the cost of the power that usually is why I and other care about power usage, it's the heat and overclocking headroom. It seems silly to pay someone more money to get the same product that has just been overclocked if I can do the same. In this case it is more expensive (albeit, a...

Judging from the website and version numbers it hasn't got to Vivaldi's level of polish yet but it'll be worth trying when it gets to 1.0. Re: USB C-to-A cables for specific phone models?!

Current the cable can handle. I saw a 2A and a 3A on the links you gave. Some phones require the higher current for either faster charge or just charging at all. Can you explain, Arvald? IIRC a 3 Amp USB-A cable would be useless because A ports can't output 3 Amps. I thought that USB 3.0 standards ...

My current system is an Optiplex 790 USFF with it's own 4L case and dinky little internal PSU (it's very cute). NCase M1. I paid a semi-embarrassing amount for it (was over $200 after shipping IIRC) I'm also part of the 'paid silly money for a tiny case because the case manufacturers aren't making a...

Re: 4K HDR madness

Complicating matters is the HDR standards situation. From what I gather, Dolby Labs developed HDR10 and gave it away for free, except they kept a flaw in it whereby loss of detail occurs in darker scenes. Do you mean static metadata? It's a bit odd to call it a flaw, it's just a technology that isn...

With no details of the test conditions it's pretty meaningless. If they only did it with the minimum batteries onboard and race tyres then it's not comparable to production car lap times.

The trouble with Kaveri/Carrizo is that I can't reliably tell which ones are full power and dual channel. Maybe my google-fu just isn't strong enough? For Kaveri it's the second number being even (e.g. A8-7 2 00 instead of A8-7 1 00). They also end in P. Carizzo you can't tell, all the chips have c...

That's a very low temperature for it to be overheating, usually it doesn't even back off turbo boost until over 90°C.

What symptoms are you seeing and what leads you to believe they're caused by the CPU?

Which cooler are you using and what sort of clockspeeds are you seeing?

It's possible that neither the 520m nor the integrated nvidia integrated graphics have H.264 hardware acceleration available/active, which would explain why you're dropping a massive number of frames/experiencing a slideshow. Given the mention of Ryzen 5 I'm guessing this PC is a desktop? If that's the case than the i3 is of dubious value right now unless you can get a good deal on it. The Pentium G4600 and either the i5-7400 or i5-7500 depending on price difference are the optimum ones to go for right now. The i5 is nic...

Depends on the pricing. If rumours are correct then probably the slowest 6/12 or the slowest 4/4 will be the most attractive options. The 6/12 being the most capable chip at an affordable price and the 4/4 being a good replacement for the i3 now that the G4560 has rendered it of dubious value. The 4...

The models below them are generally older cards with substantial performance reductions for not much saving. An GT 740 ...
