Re: Website Font on Mac and Windows

Windows and Mac OS also use different font smoothing algorithms which can affect smaller text, particularly fonts that rely on blurred edges to look correct.

Re: 1440p is full screen but 3200x1800 is not.

Probably Windows 7 quirks. If you swap the 290 to the Windows 10 system does it work? EDIT: And yeah, using the scaling setting is a better choice than outputting a non-native resolution. Programs using standard GUI APIs will look the same, but those that are HiDPI aware will be able to take advanta...

Re: Dome with slider keyboards still made?

Domes with mechanisms to actuate them when they collapse rather than at the bottom of their travel are still available. Often under the name semi-mechanical or similar these days. Topre's is widely considered the best (also used in Fujitsu's Happy Hacking Pro keyboards) but they're rather expensive.

Those sorts of apps tend to be misguided at best and scams at worst. There's very little in a modern OS that you can tune to any measurable benefit, unless you're doing something really unusual with it (which they don't cover anyway).

Re: Output conversion...Check your plug!

The HDMI 1.3 spec that brought HDMI up to Dual-link bandwidth was finalised in 2006 while the 4870 was released in 2008 so we're talking pretty cutting edge tech here. Dual link DVI to HDMI is not just a simple pin adapter* so it's possible the converter circuitry was unavailable or unduly expensive...

The RX 550 would be the equivalent AMD card (i.e. cheapest model that has the latest encode/decode hardware), although it is a little more powerful. I can't help with the Linux side of things though.

Re: best gaming system that is very low power for a campervan

Mobile and mobile-like setups are hard to beat, the Switch uses 12W to run Skyrim on it's own display. Any sort of RX560-level computer or console setup is going to be a hefty 100W with screen. Consoles, Laptops, MiniPCs and Desktops are all pretty similar. The new single package Core i7 Radeons mig...

For video playback it's Intel GPUs all the way. They're just better supported.

But while it does have a decent amount of power, it's going to struggle to push even 2010 at 8 million pixels.

I'm wondering still.. something like the 1600x, inside the N200 or the 100R, is that an acceptable pairing if using the stock HSF? We'll all be getting used to those sorts of figures in the near future, The Tesla Model S averages 20.6 kWh/100km for example.

Although I guess the Americans on here are already used to cars returning mid-twenties fuel economy.

Don't buy anything. It's definitely not normal for the latest Intel graphics to use 8GB of RAM when running a 3840x2160 monitor. You need to track down and identify the problem or you risk spending money for no benefit. Do you still have the old screen? It's worth reconnecting it to make sure the ne...

Re: Power supply question for new build

I presume TechReport's power consumption figures are at the wall, so it'll be 230W being pulled from the power supply. That's a good 30% margin, and those figures are with a much more power hungry CPU. An 8700k pulls around 55-60W more at stock speeds than a 8350k. The adapter is much more dodgy tho...

AltGr is ubiquitous on European keyboards, even the UK has it although it's generally only used for the €.

SharpKeys isn't a background utility by the way, it's purely a convenience tool for setting registry values. It's well worth a go.

Low quality videos like youtube are always going to look better on a TV. Partly because the image is simply smaller - it fills less of your field of vision - and partly because TVs are designed to flatter the image. Nobody's going to be using a TV for video editing so it can try and hide compression...

If all four corners are firmly anchored and you're only worried about a single leg rather than a bent frame I'm guessing this is a slot together type rather than a screwed together folding model. If that's the case then instead of fixing it you might want to give some consideration to redesigning it...

Are they're any major gains from a hardware decode by upgrading? In HEVC and VP9 yes, in H.264 no. The big thing missing on nVidia's cards at the moment is Displayport Adaptive Sync (aka Freesync) so if you're likely to replace your monitor in the life of the card then I'd definitely stick to the A...

I played the series for the first time a couple of years ago and Tesla Effect felt like it carried on directly. If it wasn't for the modern graphics and control you'd easily mistake it for something released a year or two after overlord rather than fifteen years later.

OLEDs have an unusual pixel structure with four subpixels instead of the usual three so you'd likely see some oddities even at full resolution (so be sure to turn off cleartype), although only if you're close enough of course. If you don't like the TV's scaling you can always get your graphics card ...

I just didn't know if I needed X amount of VRAM to push a 2K WQHD monitor. You do, but it's 50-60MB or something equally trivial. Do the older cards you mention have HDMI or DP outputs? You only need to splash out on an gaming/workstation card like a 560 or 1050 for 3440x1440 and above, all the cheaper cards will happily do 2560x1600 and below. A GT710 is often a good combination of cheap, only a bit ancient and not too much slower than integrated graphics, but even the 5450/R5 230...
