Re: Nas solutions

Unless you are space constrained, I would recommend the NAS Killer v2.0 from serverbuilds.net . It's amazing how much performance you can get on industrial-grade components a few years old for so little money. You'll be able to do everything you want (and more) and keep control of all your data. IMO...

Re: Upgrade recommendations?

Would you actually notice an upgrade if you had 20% more clockspeed or 50% more cores? Games? No. FPGA builds, yes, the builds scale pretty well with clock speed. Software compilation, yes, scales pretty well with clock speed and cores. RAM prices are sky high RAM prices are atrocious. I'd wait a l...

Upgrade recommendations?

I've got that five-year itch and am hoping for some upgrade recommendations. Currently I have a 3570K overclocked to 4.5GHz, 32GB RAM, GTX 1080, and 2 SATA SSDs. I run Windows 10 for games (not incredibly stressful - Civ VI, Ashes of the Singularity, Diablo III) and a CentOS VM for FPGA/software dev...

Re: Tesla autopilot tragedy

I hate corporations so much. The bit about the tragic loss of life belongs ahead of the PR/lawyer CYA. I was surprised that this could happen. I immediately thought to myself, wait, they're not using LIDAR or IR? A vehicle moving perpendicular to radar has a doppler signature at 0m/s, in effect look...

Awesome, thanks. Looks like that would work. That riser at the end of your tape measure is also removable, right?

Mmm, Dell rep just called and said both the R730 and T630 only support 4.2" PCIe card form factor. Dang it.

curtisb, can you confirm or deny?

Re: Fastest Sequential Write on Consumer Hardware

Forgot one: Mixing RAM reads/writes isn't an issue. We'll record one way into RAM for each test event (all writes), then "trickle" out to SSDs in the server after the test event. So we should have excellent bandwidth utilization on the RAM. The bottleneck should be the PCIe3x8 link.

Re: Fastest Sequential Write on Consumer Hardware

To answer some more questions in no particular order... Our Dell contact had the same answer on the riser card for the R730. He's checking with engineering to make sure the non-compliant 6.5" height of the FPGA card will fit. There should only be the one FPGA expansion card, so overheating bett...

Re: Fastest Sequential Write on Consumer Hardware

Infiniband is the only affordable option if splitting up between multiple hosts. 100 Gbps EDR is cheaper than 10/40 Gbps Ethernet much of the time! To be clear the QSFP28 connectors are on the Xilinx PCIe cards and are purely for data recording. There's no need to tie the machines together at all. ...

Re: Fastest Sequential Write on Consumer Hardware

It's not consumer hardware, but you should be able to do it with an X99 motherboard and 2 of these monsters: Would love to, but can't buy. Dare I ask what OS? Don't care. Probably WS12R2, but RedHat would be fine if the hardware support is there. That's exactly the server that I would recommend. Th...

Re: Fastest Sequential Write on Consumer Hardware

Thanks everyone for all the responses. I think based on everything I've heard the way to go is use two servers with RAM disks. I may have limited the scope of the discussion too much by restricting answers to consumer-grade hardware. Basically I don't want to get into prohibitively expensive enterpr...

Fastest Sequential Write on Consumer Hardware

What's the fastest sequential write speed I can achieve using consumer-grade hardware? I have a project where I want to write sequential data at a sustained ~15GB/s (gigabytes per second) from FPGA(s) connected to one or more PCs using PCIe 3.0 x8. I want to use consumer hardware as much as possible...

Re: Protection of Employee Information

I am an employee, not the employer. I was mostly upset that all of my information was exposed to any employee of the company. Oddly, this does not appear to be illegal. Texas, like most states, only seems to regulate disclosure of information for/by government agencies and financial institutions. Pr...

Re: What are you READING right now?

I'm reading through the list of Hugo/Nebula joint winners . Just finished Dreamsnake and Paladin of Souls , currently on The Fountains of Paradise . I started reading the list because of Ender's Game . The books so far have all been tremendous. They're obviously all well-written, but there's been at...

Re: Sci-fi Book Recommendations

+1 for the Hugo/Nebula winners.

And I'll give an extra mention for
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card,
which is on that list, and is my favorite sci-fi book.

Nothing is as good as Ender's Game, but up through Shadow of the Hegemon are decent reads.

Car Audio Receiver

Anyone have any recommendations on a fancy-pants Android-compatible Car Audio receiver? I have a 2009 Nissan Altima, and i'm not particularly enamored with the receiver. The hands-free functionality for the blue-tooth works okay but it's slow and clunky and I have to enter every number manually. I a...

Any advice as to the configuration of the Aeron chair? I see there are a few options and sizes to choose from. Get the adjustable arms, tilt limiter and seat angle. I'll put in another vote for the Galant. I bought all new furniture for my office about six months ago... Ikea wound up getting a lot of money. Re: HELP - External WD Elements

My condolences. As others have said, your drive is on its way out. No mechanical drive is perfect. Basically at the time they are manufactured they have some sectors on the disk that don't work. The drive has a list of these bad sectors, and simply doesn't put data there. On a healthy disk, this lis...

Re: Cleaning hardware with vacuum could damage parts??

Don't clean any actual electronics with a vacuum, unless it's an ESD-sensitive vacuum. Just use compressed air. You can use a vacuum on your case, fans, and heatsink with pretty much no risk. I don't know how you could possibly damage a fan with a vacuum unless you had the world's strongest vacuum o...

Re: Kindle to Work with Libraries

Good news indeed for Kindle owners. Now all we have to do is wait until the policy is changed "later this year," and for them to implement the feature to borrow the actual books. Still, it's a step in the right direction.
