Re: 6700K good time to buy?

Microcenter always has the best prices on CPU's. Love that place. But yeah, a 6700k at $260 is a great deal compared to the 7700k. The slight clockspeed increase isn't worth the extra $90. IPC is the same after all, and the video decoding is worthless if you're using a nvidia/amd vid card anyway (wh...

Re: GTX 1070 on newegg in stock now

The 1070's at newegg are all way over MSRP. Boo. Puts a big dent in their FPS/$.

Maybe prices will be better once Radeon 480's hit.

I'm still trying for a sub $630 GTX 1080.

Re: anyone else's builds considered overkill?

Mine is! Just built an i5 3470, 16 GB RAM, 120 GB SSD, 660Ti, mostly following TR's Sweet Spot recommendation. This thing is crazy fast. My old Core2 Quad 9450 with Radeon 5850 wasn't doing too bad, except for video encoding, but I figured it was time. SATA3 and USB3 are nice bonuses, and I can fina...

Re: Desktop Trinity

I say pay a little more to get an i5. The difference in performance should carry you a couple years longer at least, giving more time for the power savings to make up the price difference. And even if the numbers don't actually work out, just choose to believe that while you enjoy the extra performa...

Re: Favourite Cpu of all times

Cyrix DLC40. My first computer with a floating point unit. The DX4-100 I took to college. The Pentium 166 I played Quake on and listened to MP2s. The Duron600 I bought at launch and overclocked to 800 with the pencil trick. The Athlon XP that was making the Pentium 4 look bad. Since then, all Core s...

Zacate fileserver performance

Hey guys. I put together a Zacate E-350 fileserver running Debian 6 last March or so. It was great. I had encrypted filesystems and a gigabyte network connection pumping out 40 MB/s. Not screaming fast, but good enough for me. Then I totally screwed it up about a month ago by messing with my sources...

Re: Got the WRX! Now some questions...

I'd never use non synthetic oil in my turbo car. I'm told regular oil cokes up on the hot turbo. Not sure if modern turbos have this issue though. Or the recommendation to leave it idling a couple of minutes before shutting down...
